Why I would NOT make a good mod

Andaluciae

I truly don't believe that I would make a good mod, and I'm gonna let you know why. I invite anyone else who thinks that they (or I) wouldn't make a good mod to post here as well.

1. I'm far too partisan and set in my beliefs. I'm afraid I might abuse moderator power and be a bad person by locking threads I don't like.

2. I don't have the dedication to be a mod.

3. Policing isn't fun either, I don't like to track down pricks.

4. I'd delete any and all posts by Chess Squares.

And there are several reasons I can't be a mod.

1. In late May of 2003 I got kicked out of the UN, I think it was a mistaken case of multimembering, but I didn't challenge it until November of 2003, and as such, the decision stands.

2. I got a nation stolen from me by someone I know and I used slightly improper methods of getting the nation back.

So, there's why I don't want to be a mod and couldn't be one. How about you?

1. I'm probably too partisan. Collectivists and anticapitalists really piss me off sometimes, and I'd probably be unable to prevent my bias from seeping in somewhere.

2. Stupid people piss me off. Moderating is all about dealing with stupid people and requires them not to be able to piss you off by being stupid.

3. I don't want to.

That'll about do it.

Well, I think I would make a failry good mod.

1. I've agreed with conservatives from time to time and can set my beliefs aside when the situation calls for. Everytime I told MKULTRA to stop trolling and using democracynow.org for example.

2. I'm on NS for a few hours a day. I think that's enough dedication

3. Eh.

4. I don't complain unless things are obviously bad. So I wouldn't randomly be deating posts.

1. never been kicked from UN, I've always had one nation in it.

2. Never had my nation hacked (maybe cause noone wants it?)

2.) I'm heavily biased against stupidity.
3.) I occasionally let my temper get the better of me.

Why I probably shouldn't be mod:

1) I have a very low tolerance for racial superiority topics.
2) I have very high tolerance for everything else.
3) My opinion of spam is not entirely based on reality. To me, if it's amusing, it isn't spam.
4) I have a great disdain for militaristic rps. Even those considered 'good' by the board standards don't impress me. Only a very rare few do.
5) My presence on the board is fitful. I've gone days, even weeks without showing up. Other times, I'm on for several hours a day. I think mods should keep somewhat more regular schedules than this.
6) Whiners...whiners...whiners!

Why I probably should be a mod:

1) I believe that some inflammatory threads can be saved. A little humor can go a long way.
2) I'm here for the entertainment. Mine and other people's.
3) I have no shame whatsoever.
4) I defy labels. Nobody can honestly call me a 'conservative', 'liberal', 'left', 'right', 'communist', 'anarchist', etc. I have an aire of unbiasedness about me.
5) The new mod weapon of choice: Pie Cannons. :D

My reasons are...

1 - I'm only a newish nation, and still have'nt figured the rules out completly yet (they can be very confusing at times) :).

2 - I already mod on two other forums, and that is more than enough for any sane person ;).

3- The very thought of being obligated to even open, let alone read, most of the threads on the General forum, scares the hell out of me :D.

I would not be a good mod because I don't take anything seriously enough...the super-serious threads bore me, and if I try and make light of it, it doesn't go over well. Plus, I have very few posts to even be considered a mod, lol.

Why I would not make a good mod:

1.) Sometimes I become insulting and don't even realize it
2.) I just wish that I could smack all those stupid people out there. (Including myself, sometimes.)
3.) I would freak out at the power, and either overuse it or never use it

Why I would make a good mod:
1.) I am very fair, and realize that Yes, I Can Be Stupid!!
2.) I have an insanly excelent patience for all except the overly-annoying
3.) I have more than enough free time to dedicate to NS
4.) I've been here for a while, know how things go....
5.) When I realize I've done something dumb, I'll edit it and apologize for my sudden moment of stupidity if anyone notices

I think you guys are just rationalising, trying to make it seem like you don't really want it...everyone desires status and power over others. Everyone wants what the other person has especially if it makes the other person more powerful than themselves, its natural. Keeping up with the Jones type stuff.

I want a position of power that requires minimal (and hopefully paid) effort. And a modship doesn't have either of these.

Yes, it was an honour to be chosen and asked to do the job, and I do enjoy it :).

Its not all roses though. While the job has its rewards, it can also be very stressful and frustrating at times.

The first site I started modding on, nearly a year ago, is a pretty big one (not as big as NS though), and I do the politics section. As you can imagine, that gets very hot and nasty at times, and I have to spend time cleaning up the mess, and calming down the members. The other site, where I am a supermod, and do the whole forum, is much smaller, but has mostly teenage members, who love to spam the place up. I do get frustrated when I come on there, and have to spend an hour sometimes, cleaning up after them, before I can do any posting of my own, or play the games.

What would you say are the rewards and what woulds you say would be the downpoints besides the spam and stuff...do you ever feel sort of alienated from the other people because they look up to you or view you has different from themselves? Do you feel kind of wierd because maybe that person who is kissing your butt and being extra friendly may not even care about or like you but wants something out of you (I see this alot on some boards)?

The rewards can be as small as knowing you have assisted a new member, introducing something to your forum that you know will help the members, having someone you verbally rapped over the knuckles PM you with an apology and then not repeat their mistake, the satisfaction you feel when you delete a very offensive thread/post so that no-one else had to read it...etc.

To be honest, I don't feel alienated from other members on either forum, because I am a member myself. I just have access to a few buttons, they don't. Members on both forums are encouraged to "be mods" themselves, and report anything they find that breaks the rules, using a report post button. That helps keep the gap between mods and other members as small as possible. I guess its different to the system here, where things are posted out in the open, in the moderation forum. On "my" forums, any disputes are handled in private by PM, so only the member and mod concerned know about it. If things can't be solved at that level, it passes up to the admins, but again in private.

I have'nt noticed anyone kissing my butt to get favours, I'm not an admin, so really don't have any to give.

In my case yes, because thats my personality. I just don't have it in me to be a hardarse :D.

There is also the fact I am nearly 40 years old, and most of the membership of both forums know that, so maybe a bit of "respect for elders", comes into it as well (not too sure of this bit though :D).

I do hand out the warns (3 in nearly a year) when necessary, but only after every other avenue has been tried, and the member just won't listen to PMs or accept the rule they are breaking. I have also done one ban to a mass, abusive, offensive spammer, and to be honest, it did feel good to push that button. The crap he posted, on a forum where the average age of the membership is 15, just was'nt welcome.
