I would like to know which you all think is better, Halo2 or Grandtheft Auto San Andreas. If you've never played either than I suggest you do so.

Neither of those are the best. It's Final Fantasy VII, followed by The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. I challange anyone to find a game with a better plot than FFVII. That's right, you can't.

I think Halo 2 wins because of two things:

1) Graphics are much better, and
2) Plot much more creative and engrossing (I haven't played GTASA myself, but my friend is obsessed with it, so I know about it by default).

Over from the other thread, eh?

I don't think either of these two are the best ever. On that front I'd have to go with something like Monkey Island or Sam and Max Hit the Road, games where the story and humor remain great even as the graphic begin to fade.

But of these two, I'll go GTA. Good as it is, Halo is just another FPS. GTA is a much more innovative franchise and SA is a much deeper game. True, there's no multiplayer, but I think a better test of a game is how long it'll keep you occupied in singleplayer. Any multiplayer can be awesome if you're playing the right people.

And while Halo 2 looks better now, wait till SA makes it across platforms.

You can't have a poll for best video game that will work, because so many people like so many things. My brother, for instance, enjoys RPG's and RTS games, while I like TBS and FPS games. It's all a matter of what type you prefer.

BTW, San Andreas will be out on Xbox very VERY soon.

Ooh. Civ2. In the time I've squandered on the various incarnations of Civ, I probably could have built a real civilization of Sea Monkeys that by now would have surpassed humanity in its glory. And man, would they ever have built some bitchin' additions to my palace. I think I was in grade school when the original Civ came out, and I've played it at various times ever since. Like checkers or chess, it remains a good game. Strategy games have good longevity.

Sierra rereleased the first 4 Quest for Glory games about 2 years back (whenever the fifth one came out). I don't know if they're the best, but they are pretty dang good games and, if you can find that collection, they might rank among best game buys.

Also, the Fallout 1 and 2 double pack. Ten bucks for those two is a lot of fun for chump change.

And, as an alternative to Kazaaing old titles, cruise the underdogs and gamebird.dk. (I might have gotten the second one wrong, it might be freebird or something, but a google on "abandonware" will set you straight.) You can download a lot of classics for free and it's legal because the developers have abandoned the licenses.

Unless the movie Saw gets made into a game (please God? Just this once do something I ask for? Pleeeeeeease?), Eternal Darkness remains my favourite ever.

Gamebird only has part 1. Under the original title: Hero quest. Underdog has QfG 4.5. This one I think was made by fans and not Sierra. Unfortunatly it doesn't run under XP. :(

Hmm... in comparison to the real best games ever, those two suck the big one.

1) Echo The Dolphin - the original on the Mega Drive. Easily the hardest game, sure not the most revised plot, but it's easily the best game in existence.

2) Final Fantasy VII - mentioned before, but I'll do it again. One of the best games ever made, no question about it. An excellent plot and decent gameplay.

3) Metal Gear Solid - I don't think it's the first one ever made, I think there were a few before on Game Boy, but I'm talking about the Playstation version. Awesome stuff.

I can't help that several people have bashed FFVII, yet no-one can come up with a single game that has a comparable plotline! Sure, there are games with better gameplay and graphics, though the FFVII music is pretty kickass (see: One-Winged Angel, Those Chosen by the Planet), but it has the best plotline of any game I've ever played. I guess for those of you who don't really care about plot or the more conceptual parts of games, you might not like it, but I read a lot and enjoy the more thought-provoking nature of games like FFVII.

It is missing something without sound. The sniper rifles sounded phat and there hasn't been anything quite like the combination of the flamethrower whoosh and the civilian scream. The graphics are pretty dated, but my judgement is clouded by nostalgia.

But you could steal police cars and drive over people. Or brainwash an entire city so you could be rollin' with a mob of fifty.

The second coming?

Believe it or not, Bungie first introduced Halo to the bespectacled masses way back in 1999. At the time, it was a first/third-person action game for the PC and Mac (you know, that cute little box your dad uses to burn CDs) boasting a plethora of unique changes to the action genre. All plans abruptly changed, however, when Bungie was acquired by Microsoft, who morphed Halo into the world’s best console first-person shooter and the number one reason to invest money in their strange green box when it launched in the fall of 2001.

Halo wasn’t the game we were expecting it to be. It was better. What a difference two years make.

So one could only wonder what insane changes might have occurred in the three long years Bungie has been working on the highly anticipated sequel, Halo 2. How exactly do you improve a game that is widely agreed to be among the best of all time? Well, it turns out you don’t do much. Halo 2 is an exceptional first-person shooter that expands on the original with a fantastic multiplayer component, great control and a few notable gameplay tweaks, and while it stumbles a bit in its single-player campaign, it’s still more than worthy of a permanent spot in your collection.

The campaign picks up right where the first Halo left off, with Master Chief enjoying a hero’s welcome back on Earth while the leader of the Covenant forces is branded a failure and sentenced to death. This dual viewpoint approach dominates the game’s storyline, bouncing back and forth between the human efforts to stop the Covenant invasion and a burgeoning civil war threatening to destroy the Covenant from within. It’s a little hard to get into the nuts and bolts of the plot without spoiling the big twists, but suffice to say, it’s your job to shoot things, drive things, and kill things in order to save the universe.

Perhaps due to the popularity of the original game, Halo 2 benefits from a much more comprehensive narrative; a few Halo novels written in the intermittent years have fleshed out the conflict, and this game revels in its newfound mythology. A great deal of the plot focuses on the aliens, which is pretty cool, but at the same time leaves you wanting to hear more from the humans. It’s a little lopsided.

It’s also very, very linear, following much the same formula as Halo. You’ll go from location to location shooting anything that makes your reticule turn red, then figuring out which door/path is open, running through it and killing more things. While it provides a nice enough mix of indoor and outdoor areas to keep things fresh, Halo 2’s campaign is still very much a scripted corridor shooter. You don’t explore, you don’t solve puzzles, you don’t do really anything aside from kill, kill, and kill, and often you’re just doing it to get to the next cut-scene. To be fair, the scripting is good and the game never feels like target practice thanks to the solid A.I., but those who found the rail crawl marginally frustrating before will find it hasn’t changed much over the years.

Some will also take issue with the fact that despite three years in the making, Halo 2 has a cliffhanger ending. We have no idea if another game is planned (though we’d bet our unborn children that it is, were that legal), when it might be out and for what system. Yet BOOM- the game leaves you hanging with plenty of unresolved conflicts and without a particularly satisfying climactic point like the Warthog ride from hell in the original. After such a long wait and such passionate fan fervor, it feels a little cheap of Microsoft and Bungie to leave ‘em out to dry.

The campaign is a little shorter than the original, clocking in at around 10 hours if played by a Halo vet on the Normal difficulty setting. Of course, opting to try it on Heroic or Legendary will extend that play time significantly as the number of enemies increases and the A.I. gets nastier.

You’ll see many familiar aliens from the original game alongside a couple new ones, most notably the apish Brutes and some hard-to-hit flying beasties. Ramping up the difficulty seems to raise their I.Q. as well, which is good to know because on Normal, the game isn’t very hard. You can also play through the full campaign cooperatively (though not online through Xbox Live), which is great fun.

Though the single-player experience is not very thrilling in its design, the fragging itself is top notch. Before Halo, console first-person shooting was regarded as awkward, difficult and ultimately ill-advised. The game not only changed that widely held opinion, but has become the unrivaled benchmark in console shooting, so much so that just about every game after it has 'borrowed' its intuitive control scheme. Lucky for us, then, that the same great gameplay is back, intact and in a few ways improved.

For one thing, you no longer have to scour the land for health packs – Halo 2 forgoes traditional health entirely by removing it from the game and simply increasing the rate at which your shields recharge. If your shields are gone, you can only take a few hits until you die, creating a more tactical experience. You’ll run into battle, watch your shields erode, and then find cover as they recharge. It creates a faster-paced game and removes the multiple stamina bar management. Health packs are so 2001.

A more heavily touted feature is dual-wielding. Most one-handed weapons can be dualed and you can mix and match to your heart’s content. Both guns can be fired independently using the two triggers, letting you deal out a prodigious amount of damage very efficiently and making previously underwhelming weapons much more intriguing. Dual Needlers, for example, unleash a devastating torrent of homing needles that can eradicate ground units handily. The flipside of dualing, however, is that you lose the ability to toss plasma or frag grenades, which as we all know are perhaps the most useful weapons in the game. Dualing has its purpose but is not overpowered, just a smart, fun addition.

New weapons are here alongside most of the old ones. The SMG isn’t very effective alone, but can be deadly when dualed. Your trusty Battle rifle is back with a new burst fire rate and groovy mini-zoom. Since you spend a lot of time dealing with the Covenant, you’ll enjoy their cool plasma tech in the form of a solid Carbine rifle and a very effective sniper rifle, not to mention a few other nasty surprises. The best weapon in the game, though, is the Plasma sword, which you’ll remember from the original game when the Elites used it to gut you over and over again. Well, now you can gut them right back. You can swing the sword as a melee weapon or lock on to an enemy and perform a usually critical charging uppercut from a good three meters away, which is the most effective attack in the game. It’s great fun and adds a whole new ninja dynamic to the game.

But even a giant blade is no match for a giant tank. Most vehicles from the original are back, including two variations of the world-famous Warthog (one with a machine gun turret and one with a pulse gun turret) and the big nasty itself, the Scorpion tank. The Covenant ships are more exciting, though. The whip-quick Ghost (now equipped with a boost) is perhaps the best in the game thanks to its maneuverability and accuracy, while the graceful Banshee has a couple new evasive moves. The vehicles pleasantly play a larger role in the campaign than last time and are essential to what makes this such a great series.

Not to be outdone by Grand Theft Auto, Halo 2 now lets you jack enemy vehicles by simply pressing ‘X’ as they pass by, at which point you’ll trigger an animation of you hopping on the vehicle and tossing the poor driver headfirst into the dirt. It’s actually a bit harder than it sounds, especially when dealing with a Ghost trying to mow you over at top speed, but the move is hugely satisfying and a great alternative to wasting your cache of plasma grenades trying to bring down a tank. It doesn’t play into the campaign much but is undoubtedly one of the more essential concepts for Halo 2’s awesome multi-player.

Playing the original Halo with buddies was an always exciting but somewhat difficult experience; you’d either have to cram together on the couch to play split-screen or link together a few Xboxes for a LAN party. Halo 2 does away with all that thanks to its fantastic Xbox Live support, which does as much for the game’s multiplayer experience as it does for your aching back – no need to carry your TV up to your friend’s second-floor apartment.

The breadth of options for online play is staggering. Supporting up to 16 players at once, Halo 2 features seven main game types: Slayer, Capture the Flag, King of the Hill, Oddball, Juggernaut, Assault and the new Territories mode. Most of these were in the first Halo and should be instantly familiar to vets. Recalling EA’s Battlefield series, Territories is a new mode that has two teams fighting for control over certain locations of the map, while Assault is like reverse Capture the Flag as you plant a bomb in the enemy’s base.

Each of the modes comes with a built-in list of variants created by Bungie, which include Team versions and weapon-specific game types (turn Oddball into Rocketball!). Plus, players can set up customized game and tweak just about every conceivable thing to their liking. With about a dozen maps spanning the gamut from small melee style arenas to vast, open playgrounds, the combinations and permutations are deep. Unlike the original Halo, you can play any type of game on any map. Given, certain kinds of games make more sense on certain maps; you wouldn’t want to play 2 on 2 Capture the Flag on a giant map, for instance. At any rate, the choices are many and the variety impressive.

We do take issue, though, with the continued lack of offline bot support. Since online success depends heavily on learning the maps, the ability to play maps offline with bots seems like a no-brainer, yet again we’re shut out. Curses.

But otherwise, this is a complete online package. Xbox Live has seen more than a few upgrades since its inception, and Halo 2 takes advantage of the service’s stability by producing a well thought-out set of features. Finding games of the appropriate skill level is easy thanks to handy player rankings and a smart Optimatch system. If your team or group of friends wants to stick together while checking out different game servers, you actually can move everyone through the system together by forming a temporary party. Full clan support is here as well for those wishing to go semi-pro.

They’ve thought of just about everything, particularly when it comes to stat-tracking. Extensive stats are recorded after every match, including medals, hit percentages and head shots, fleshing out the experience for vets who want to see how they stacked up. Astoundingly, Bungie.net actually keeps track of every player’s performance in every matched game by tracking wins and losses. At least it works right now – we’ll see what happens when the number of players online goes from a few hundred thousand to a few million. Heck, if the host cuts out of a game, the server will automatically switch to another user so the whole game doesn’t crash. Smart, smart, smart.

When you combine the solid performance of Xbox Live (I suffered very few lag issues when testing out Halo 2) with the built-in team mechanics afforded by the use of voice, vehicles and modes, you get an unrivaled online fragfest. It might not introduce anything particularly new in terms of gameplay, but what it does, it does better than anyone else.

Not to take anything away from it, but when Halo first hit the scene, it was a revelation in graphical design partly due to the world’s unfamiliarity with the power of the Xbox. Nowadays, we expect big things from Xbox games, and Halo 2 mostly delivers the goods. The in-game action is beautiful, from the eerily realistic bump-mapped surfaces to the accurate physics and animations. Fancy lighting effects are everywhere – the game world is consistent, smooth and popping with color. Aside from one load when you start the game, it all streams in seamlessly with just a tiny hiccup when you pass through a loading area. It’s technically unsurpassed.

At times, however, the game suffers from some weird pop-up texture issues and occasional framerate slowdown, though this is usually constrained to the cut-scenes. You sit through quite a few of them over the course of the story and can’t help but notice their general lack of polish.

The sound, on the other hand, is flawless. Several rousing themes chime in from time to time to punctuate the action and lend a cinematic sense of drama to the goings-on. An enormous amount of dialogue was recorded for Halo 2, so much that you’ll rarely hear lines repeated. In multiplayer games, the voice chat volume changes depending on your proximity to others, adding more to the immersion. Tack on great Dolby 5.1 positional support, and you have every reason to upgrade your sound system.

Your experience with Halo 2 is inextricably tied to your particular wants and needs from a first-person shooter. Despite a genuinely better plot this time around, the short, linear campaign and unresolved ending will certainly aggravate those hoping for a more evolved single-player game. But make no mistake – what Halo 2 lacks in its single-player it more than makes up for in its great gameplay, gorgeous delivery and flat-out addictive multiplayer. This is as good as console fragging gets. Once again, a little slice of gaming heaven from Bungie results in an easy recommendation.

A

+ Excellent gameplay
+ Great delivery
+ Plasma sword pwns j00
+ Huge multiplayer
+ Interesting story
- Short, overly linear campaign
- Aggravating cliff-hanger
- Not revolutionary, but REALLY good

I've played both games, and I played the games that preceeded them, and I loved both. However, I had to vote for San Andreas as the best game.

Although the graphics and multiplayer of Halo 2 (and Halo) easily best anything offered by San Andreas, the Halo series lacks the feeling of openness and freedom offered by San Andreas. I like being able to take the long way around, to find my own paths, and sometimes, to just forget about accomplishing a goal and just play around.

And while Halo 2's story is the envy of any Hollywood blockbuster, it just feels too short. San Andreas has yet to get old, and has tons of funny moments that never seem to run out.

Agreed. I think they should combine Halo, Halo2, and later Halo3 into 1 video game(as far as the campaign goes) it would make them no money but it would kick ass.

Or Rome. That's.... fairly religious. Halo two was quite good, but once I finished it I lacked the urge to play it again, something I immediately did with HL2, when I finished it at 5:30am. GTA:SA, I've never played. But if it's anything at all like the last games in the series, which, co-incidently, were all the exact same game with different cars and graphics, then I can't imagine that I'll be overwhelmed.

So either HL2 or Rome. Anyone who says otherwise is a fool and a communist.

*nods in agreement*

FF VII is perfect. The most perfect game ever. Even with the crappy translation.

FFVII sorta reminds me of the sims. Not because the two games are even remotely alike but because of how over rated they are.

All the FF series are linear, stupid console games. I just dont get the jap console rpgs. The stories are very stupid + predictable like reading a really lame sci fi or fantasy novel or something. You know whats coming at the start of the game. You are forced down a certain path + cannot make any decent choices that affect the game.

A rpg like baldor's gate is 50 times the game the FF series games are.

Maybe we should say what game did you find to be the greatest at the time you played it?

if so CIV2 would be my choice. For right now I would say world of warcraft or ROME total war...

Freeciv is a pretty good free version of Civ . you can set it for Civ 1 or Civ 2 rules and it does have networking built in.

Not necessarily the best game ever, but definetely kick-ass good, and suprisingly unmentioned so far: Metroid Prime 2:Echoes

I am horrified to find that nobody has even MENTIONED any metroid games so far! Great game series, especially for completionists (those who don't put down a game until they find EVERYTHING).

As for the BEST game, I'm torn between Super Mario RPG for SNES and Starcraft/Broodwar for PC.

Side note: Nothing is more fun than using the screw attack to get around and kill anything and everything in Prime 2. Saves a hell of a lot of missiles.

How about such classics as
Chrono Trigger
Final Fantasy III (w/ the Espers)
Final Fantasy VII
Secret of Mana
Super Mario World
Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

Civilization I and especially II
Alien Legacy
Pirates! (the original)
Duke Nukem II (and 3D was kinda cool)
Wolfenstien 3D
Space Quest. All of them.
Lemmings
Secret of Monkey Island
Populous
SimCity (I especially like 2000)
Master of Orion II
Escape Velocity
Escape Velocity Override
Escape Velocity Nova

So there.

As far as best video game ever, that would be a very subjective term, dependant on what game you're playing. . .

I'd say one of these should win however -

Chrono Trigger
Front Mission
Megaman serries (all the original, X1-2-3 and Zero's, but not NT)
Run Saber
Top Gear (yes, the SNES original)
Zero Wing
Moonbase Commander (god damn good music. . .)

Halo is nothing more then a generic shooter with a huge commercialisation streak behind it, and GTA san andreas is a remake of GTA 3 with improve graphics. . . They're not really anything new, flashing or exceptional.

My favorite by far is Lunar 2: Eternal Blue, though it's certainely not the most well-made. It's just so cute and charming that I can't resist it.

Final Fantasy VII is probably my second favorite. The plot is convoluted yet interesting enough to be engaging, while the music is awesome, the characters are some of my favorites in game history, and the gameplay is delicious.

The best RPG I've ever encountered, however, has to be Xenogears. The plot is brilliant, the music is great, the characters are incredibly 3-dimensional, and there's a certain majesty to its gameplay. I think FF7 has an edge over this in the score and character development departments, but it is overall the most well-rounded game that I have ever played.

Other ones that are in my favorites list would have to be any of the Monster Rancher games, Metal Gear Solid 1, and any of the GTA games.

I tend not to like American RPGs, like Baulder's Gate, or Might and Magic. They're glamour and nothing more. I will attest to liking Age of Empires and Everquest, though.

PS: FF7 is the only Final Fantasy I like. Most people who've played FF6 swear by it as the epitome of the FF series, but I honestly couldn't get into it. FF 1 - 5 were cute, but forgetable. FF8 was horrible. I haven't tried anything after 8, and don't plan to.

I detect quite a bit of bias here... only TWO games, and both are console? I'm not a big fan of consoles... (poor graphics, few games and even fewer good ones, and the non-upgradablility)

But back to the topic.... How about FFI? Best Final Fantasy game evar! But CS is even better :P. No, CS:S! What say you?

(Actually, I could probably name a hundred games better than those two, but that would be rather supercilious of me :P )

How come no-one's mentioned the Worms series yet? It's amazing! Ahem.
Halo 2 isn't great: if I wanted a great FPS I'd play Half-Life 2, or possibly the original. If I wanted to play a GTA game, give me the original any day. Or rather, don't bother, as I already have it.
My top games are:
Worms (World Party or Armageddon, pretty much the same, and the original)
Deus Ex - possibly the best plot to any game I've played, though see below.
New Zealand Story (on the Amiga, 1989, still one of the best games I have ever played). You're a kiwi, and you and all your friends have been kiwi-napped from a zoo by a walrus. You escape and you have to rescue your friends. It's a platform game.
Civ 2.
Day Of The Tentacle, and pretty much any other LucasArts adventure.
Humbug (text adventure designed to run in DOS, by the author of, among others, Jacaranda Jim. It's class, honest)
Armed Bookworms

Are you aware that all of Zelda has "Japanese art", as you put it? Because all of it was made in Japan, and none of Zelda really has what is considered "Japanese art", which I guess would refer to the more classical types of Japanese paintings and calligraphy. Though I guess Japanese art would most certainly be considered the artistic media they use, like wood block. But I digress, I believe you meant "cell shading", which is not "Japanese art". And I personally liked the cell shading quite a bit. I wouldn't want every Zelda game to be like that, but they executed it extremely well in my opinion.

It depends on how you're looking for "best"

Game that reaches closest to Nirvana at it's best- the Mine stage in Popful Mail (http://www.the-underdogs.org/game.php?id=3713), for the SegaCD.

Most fun to play- Tyrian 2000 (http://www.the-underdogs.org/game.php?id=2497), for the PC.

Makes you closest to caring about the characters- Lunar, Eternal Blue (SegaCD, Sega Saturn, and PSX)

Will withstand the test of time the best- Tossup between Tetris and Starcraft.

Best written, planned, programmed, and highest replay value- Star Control II (http://sc2.sourceforge.net)

Best battle system- Chrono Trigger.

And I'll throw in props to Orge Battle, for all those charming typos/so many endings.

I agree with you fully.

FPS: Deus Ex
RTS: Starcraft/Brood War
Most Innovative RTS: Armor Command (one of the most interesting interfaces I've ever found, which is extremely nifty once you get the hang of it. the game also has an emphasis on squad-based tactics, rather than massive army rushes).
RPG: Diablo 2 (sure it doesn't have much of a story, but I thought FF7 was a boring PoS)

Halo 2 is crap... I have no clue why anyone would even consider it "one of" the best let alone THE best.

GTA is better, possibly the best videogame ever... but so many others come to mind before either of those:

Tetris, Super Mario 64, any other Mario for that matter other than yoshi's island,Goldeneye, Half-life, Counter-strike, Half-life 2, Megaman, any of the Final Fantasys (other than 2,3,5 and 8), Chrono Trigger, City of Heroes, Everquest, Starcraft, Warcraft II/III, Diablo I/II, Fallout 2/Tactics, Tony Hawk 2... and that's just off the top of my head.

Starcraft gets my vote for best game ever... I spent easily over 1000 hours on it.

That's the seventh deadly sin, just so you know. You're going to hell.

Final Fantasy VI (by far Nobuo Uematsu's greatest work in video game music)
Though I am bound to respect your decision, if for no other reason than the fact that you knew his name (I don't know which order it's supposed to be in...I try to do it in correct Japanese fashion, family name followed by the given name, but I do not know which is which with him. Same with Taku Iwasaki.) However, you must have not played FFVII if you think FFVI has better music. "One-Winged Angel", "Turk's Theme", "Shin-Ra Company", "Those Chosen By the Planet", etc. Those were just the first to pop into my head, but pretty much every song is freaking amazing.

I didn't say that Majoras Mask is better than Ocorina of Time. I meant the Anime.

[QUOTE=Parlett]I challange anyone to find a game with a better plot than FFVII.

[QUOTE]

Lol, GTA beats FFVII anyday.

At least its real. That game is real America, drugs, criminals, guys with frigging AK-47's walking around. Gang trouble. Everything America can offer is in there.

What about FFVII?

I quoted this:

Final Fantasy 7's storyline is simple...beat the bad guys right? That would be easy if you knew WHO the bad guys were! FF7 involves such a storyline that cannot be easily explained!

You get off a train. You destroy a mako reactor. You return to base. That's how it all starts. You fight, you kill, and you don't care who it is. Your skills are sold to the highest bidder. You want to be cold and heartless...

Beat the bad guys, lol. Actually in GTA:SA, all the bad guys are only revealed at the end including in VC. And you kill everyone? Pretty stupid.

Now the final judgement:

San Andreas: 100%, 5 Stars, 10/10.
FFVII: N/A. I couldn't even find ANY ratings probably because its so damn bad, I rate: 25%, 2 Stars, 2/10

And GTA San Andreas beats em all. All other games bow down to R*, R* Forever!!

San Andreas, is a game that can never be completed. Sure there's a percentage but you can't really 'win' the game because there's always more to do. Then you still have to get your skills to the max, maximum money, even best clothes.

And you can never get tired of CJ's quotes:

I feel like such an idiot for not remembering this game. Has anyone ever played Fallout 2 (or the original Fallout)? FO2 is the best RPG ever. I don't want to hear about your Final Fantasies, or even Chrono Trigger (good game, though), because Fallout 2 could beat those games any day.

So who here remembers Fallout 2?

I remember Fallout 2. I loved it, but it was so buggy even with the patch that it was near enough unplayable. Some dude's set up his own player-built patch though, it fixes tonnes of stuff, he keeps updating it with new fixes every month or so, and it's completely FREE! He doesn't even want donations. Websire below in shameless plug scandle.

Fallout 2 was best RPG, best squad-level strategy was XCOM Apocalypse , best army-level strategy was Rome Total War, best economic game was Fragile Allegience (now in sexy abandonware!), best adventure game turned out to be as shite as all the rest (unless we count text-based ones, then it's probably Humbug), Best FPS is probably one of the Jedi Knight games because they've got so much extra scope to the others, best Elite-style game was Wingcommander Privateer 1.

But then there's ones you don't want to classify, isn't there? Worms has to be in as 'Best games to get really stoned with', Dungeon Keeper should be there for being great, everything Sid Meier ever did should probably also be put in somewhere.

Halo 2 is nothing special. I liked the city level in Iraq, but the rest of it was pretty humdrum stuff packaged in nice graphics. GTASA isn't really THAT much of an advance on GTA3, and I can imagine getting pretty bored of it after a few weeks (like the other two, then.).

Not really. Starcraft was primative, unoriginal, and really didn't stand out from the crowd even when it was released. It's just Warcraft 2 re-skinned.

Damn, that was a good game. I tried to revisit it a couple years ago, but the processor was so fast that everything was lightspeed and I'd get my ass fragged in a fraction of a second.

Let me add to the list either Dune or the first C&C for RTS.

So if it's not good on the first shot, then the game totally sux?

Like most multiplayer games, it required patching, until the right feel is there.... Starcraft 2 is one of the most anticipated games ever... it'll break several records once relesed. Same thing with Starcraft: Ghost.

Starcraft owns...period. Why do you think it took so long for a sequel? Because the game ruled so much, they have no idea how to make it better.... so they just worked on the lameass Warcraft series.

There's almost no difference between the two games. Starcraft 2 will be Warcraft 3 only re-skinned. And it'll continue to use those horribly cliqued races, perhaps adding in a few more hopelessly out-of-date ideas. It's got little serious strategy involved, the multiplayer game was no better than any other I've played, the maps crude and inadequate. How can you really consider there to be a difference in anything other than setting between Warcraft and Starcraft?

I gotta throw in with Naso on the RTS issue. Since Dune, it's been the same model repeated over and over with new graphics. Really, what changes between the different Blizzard RTS games or between the various iterations of C&C? Oooh. You mine space gas instead of gold.

Some stuff, like Dawn of War, pushes the envelope a little (the idea of terrain becoming the tactical resource--instead of a gold mine and some trees--is a step forward which adds more strategic elements, not much more, but a little). Rome takes huge steps forward, totally separating nation-building and warfare interfaces (so far that it doesn't even fit the RTS model anymore).

I absolutely HATED the combat system in KOTOR. I felt like I just had to line up my moves and then I could go for a coffee break or something. Other than that, great game, though.

The combat system was the reason I couldn't stand Galaxies, as well. If I have to pay to play a game, I want to feel like I'm in control of the fights, rather than being a useless spectator.

You know, instead of lining up your moves, you can select whicever one you want and then press "A" to use it immediately, instead of stacking them with "X". I did this a lot, if only to end fights sooner because I was taking too much damage.

You ever played the old board game Diplomacy? It's a bare-bones basic form of that system, and it adds so much more strategy because you know that you're going to get backstabbed by three people every turn, while at least one more accidentally invades Russia. It turns into the absolute most fun of any boardgame, as long as you've got at least six people.

Oh, and either France or Turkey is screwed at the start of every single game, but they're still the most fun to play.

My favorite game of all time has to be Mario64, i have beat it so many times and i never get tired of it, good music too. The GTA series puts me to sleep (exept the flamethrower!). Doom was a great game, still have it on my computer, play it sometimes. All the Sim-ish games are usualy good and the strategy games are fun too, (Civ2, AOE2).

If you give you two cents, why do you only get a penny for your thoughts??

Yeah, KOTOR combat sucked in both versions. That was one thing Fable did right--good real time combat with RP elements. But I guess KOTOR, for whatever reason, was wedded to the Star Wars tabletop system. So the combat system had to reflect the d20 stat values. Which means the designers couldn't let you be a low dex character but be a really good shot because of joystick skills.

Which I don't get. There's no reason a video game needs to have anything to do with a tabletop game except that they don't have to rebalance the probabilities.

Oh, man. Do I ever like Diplomacy. The full title of that game ought to be "Diplomacy: The Fine Art of Betrayal." The whole point is timing that old knife in the back. Too early and you're at a disadvantage to the other alliances. Too late and, well, you might get the knife yourself.

And I've won with Turkey. Turkey and England can come back late in the game because of the security of the corners. I'm of the opinion that Italy and Austria are at a disadvantage. You gotta be one savvy little dago to pull out a win.

Neither of those are the best. It's Final Fantasy VII, followed by The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. I challange anyone to find a game with a better plot than FFVII. That's right, you can't.
I realize you've probably already been pwned for that statement, but I'll have a go anyway. FFVI is clearly superior to FFVII if only because the battle system is more intuitive and effective. The flaw of the PS FF games, is the absurdity of allowing the atb meter to charge fully while waiting for a spell effect to finish. This greatly reduces the strategy element (not that it isn't already absurdly easy).

Oh, now come on, the historic Oda Nobunaga was much more intelligent than you are. I haven't really been "pwned" for saying that. Because I don't get pwned very often, since my rhetoric is generally superior and my ideas more thought out. The battle system wasn't exceptional in FFVII, I admit. I've seen much better. But you seemed to dodge the real issue--the plot. As yet, no-one has been able to contrive of any game that has a comparable plot to FFVII. It was better than many books I've read. At least because it was an interactive plot. Granted, it was quite linear, but that does not prohibit interactivity.

I just bought Morrowind GoTY edition recently, and I'll admit it is great, but I still say that Fallout 2 is the best single-player RPG ever. I don't know of any other CRPG's where you can blow up an outhouse and cover an entire town in... stuff... or hit children in the groin (aimed shot) with a super-sledgehammer. Get a board? That game is so old that the copyright has lapsed and it's now officially "open-source." Check The Diplomatic Pouch: www.diplom.org.

When we used to play at school, we printed one of their free maps, gridded it onto a huge piece of foam board and hung it in a remote corner of the department, using thumbtacks for armies (hereafter "The War Room"). Then you just open a hotmail account (give all players the pw), put a daily deadline on moves, and have two nations present when the mail is opened (to verify nobody's previously opened the moves).

They also make online maps (where you can change the colors of the zones to indicate occupation and players in various locations can see the situation via the Web), but the problem with these is verifying the moves. You'd have to have two players who would be cc:ed the moves so you could confirm them. Or get an extra player and take turns sitting out a round to operate the map.

But this is completely the wrong thread for this. Diplomacy could never be a computer game because the whole thing is about trust, spite, and sweet sweet payback.

When you play, do you add a resource center in N. Africa? It kind of helps balance out Italy, which I'm not sure is a good thing. There's nothing saying there needs to be any kind of balance in the game.
