Your steriotype is not supported by the evidence. There are aspects of American cutlure that are dispicable, but that's true everywhere. For the most part Americans are just like everyone everywhere, and anyone who believes otherwise is simply ignorant. If you want to hate someone, hate stupid people, rather than taking a large and diverse group that includes stupid people and lumping them all together. I don't go around saying, "haha, all British people have poor dental hygene, all French people are pretentious, all Germans are latent Nazis" and so on, I'll admit there are people within all of those groups that fit those descriptions, but not all of them, and if you cannot reckognize that you are unfairly judging many many people based on your annoyance with a select few then you are the one here who is truly stupid.

Plus, with the popularity of NASCAR growing so fast, more and more tracks are being added. A new track on Staten Island, in New York is going to be constructed this year.

His reasons for going to Iraq might have been off, but look at all the good that will come of it. The fact that you are proud to be who you are, encompasses everything else you've said, thus making the rest redundent. And the fact that you're proud (pride of association of course) to be an American shows your selective understanding of American history. Are you proud that we've wiped out entire civilizations? But seeing as how you posted, I might as well reply. I do think for my self. I understand that we have done thing decades back that we are ashamed of. Yes I am ashamed for stuff we have done. But the past is the past. We have changed.

Just to say what I think:

- People from Europe dislike (partly) Americans because of the American (maybe not majority, but a sizable minority at least) opinion of European people. It is rather a vicious cycle of hating and disliking.

- Europe and the USA both have good points, and bad points. Of course, these points will be based entirely on people's opinions, which can change, and are rarely the same as someone else's.

- Just to point out, the American economy is the largest in the world due to a number of factors, such as the government's foreign policy; American ideals that money = everything; American companies being (more) willing to exploit foreign countries in exchange for "aid". And others, besides.

The lifetime of a person is short, so wounds seem to heal quickly. The lifetime of a country, or a culture, is long, so while wounds may eventually heal, it takes much longer. What's more, people can't seem to help picking at their stitches and the wounds have a way of opening themselves back up with only the slightest prodding, so in some places wounds never truly heal at all.

The "ability to deal with people" is as natual as you upbringing makes it. Of which, many people all over the world have problems.

"A tense situation", being an American cop you have a much broader understanding of this issue. However, for most people (I know you said "job related") it is just a matter of dealing with or without it.

Hmmm...I can speak Spanish. I can also speak Russian and German, but only to swear.

But seriously, the reason many Americans don't know two or more languages is because we don't really have to. In Europe, for example, you have a bunch of countries right next to each other, all with there own languages. In America, there are two countries next to us: Mexico and Canada. Most Americans in the south know at least a little Spanish, and in the north along the Quebec border I'd imagine there are relatively many people who speak some French. But that still leaves a lot of the population not at all close to a border; therefore there isn't really a reason to learn another language.

And even so, Spanish and French are offered in the vast majority of schools.

nowadays the only people who dare to say they are proud to be americans are bush supporters... which makes the otherhalf of america not want to be american... (myself included)...

anyone who says america is not bad because of all the good things they did before like help out in previous decades with WWII and stuff need to remember that america under bush is different than america under a rational president...

BTW I have some NYC friends and I do know that lots of people in the South speak very well Spanish (I don't, I am jalous about that mixed culture). I also know that (like you said) a lot of people in the North have contacts with the French speaking part of Canada. Hell, my best US internet friend is a 50 years old black advocate at NYC wich speaks German, French, Spanish and even some Dutch. I love the US but hate the NS internet guys that attack on spelling (I also speak 5 languages) because some people (like I ) don't have English as a mothertongue.

They lack some intelligence for attcking people on spelling while they don't have the guts to attack the non English speaking poster in another tongue.

I am damn proud to be a veteran of the United States Air Force. I was damn proud to take a bullet for this country. And I am damn proud to be an American. These folks from other countries can bash America all they want, as far as I'm concerned. As far as the folks from here in America that are bashing it right now, you can do that all you want, because there are alot of good people dying in Iraq and Afghanistan, etc. so that you can have the right to do so. I'm not saying that President Bush is perfect. Then again, I can't say that anyone is. I can sit here and say President Bush is an angel, or an idiot. That's the beauty of it. I can badmouth my government because we, in America, have what's called the first amendment. That first amendment, also allows me to have my own opinions, as you folks have yours. So, if you fellow Americans want to run this country down to the ground, you go right ahead and do that, but keep in mind, why it is you have the right to do it. If this post gets me kicked off of NS, then so be it. At least I'll know in my heart that I stood firm on my belief in the United States of America. I've said my peace, call it what you want. Call ME what you want, but I'll leave it with three words that have more meaning to me now than they ever have in my life. GOD BLESS AMERICA.

It depends on the definition of computer. Some people would consider a machine that can do 2 - 1 = 1 by itself a computer, others define it as something more substantial.

At the time Britain was at least as powerful as the US. The Empire still existed then, and do you know quite how big that was? I agree, we may not have defeated the Nazis and won back France, but after we won the Battle of Britain WITHOUT direct US help, the Germans wouldnt have a chance at invasion.
