What is Emo to you?

To me, Emo is whatever you want it to be. Of course, it has to do with emotions, and how the lyrics affect you, but to each person, an 'emo' song could have very different themes. An example is, for me, Nobody's Home, by Avril Lavigne is an emo song. Actually, most of her songs tend to be emo for me.

Nobody's Home
I couldn't tell you why she felt that way,
She felt it everyday.
And I couldn't help her,
I just watched her make the same mistakes again.

What's wrong, what's wrong now?
Too many, too many problems.
Don't know where she belongs, where she belongs.
She wants to go home, but nobody's home.
It's where she lies, broken inside.
With no place to go, no place to go to dry her eyes.
Broken inside.

Open your eyes and look outside, find a reasons why.
You've been rejected, and now you can't find what you left behind.
Be strong, be strong now.
Too many, too many problems.
Don't know where she belongs, where she belongs.
She wants to go home, but nobody's home.
It's where she lies, broken inside.
With no place to go, no place to go to dry her eyes.
Broken inside.

Her feelings she hides.
Her dreams she can't find.
She's losing her mind.
She's fallen behind.
She can't find her place.
She's losing her faith.
She's fallen from grace.
She's all over the place.
Yeah,oh

She wants to go home, but nobody's home.
It's where she lies, broken inside.
With no place to go, no place to go to dry her eyes.
Broken inside.

She's lost inside, lost inside...oh oh yeah
She's lost inside, lost inside...oh oh yeah

For those of you who don't like Avril, please don't come into this thread and post "OMG you like Avril, she SUCKZORZ!" Everyone has different taste in music, and i respect that. If you don't like her, or 'emo' for that matter, don't post here. I'd prefer to keep this civilized.

Anyways, this song is emo to me because of the fact that my parents and I have never really got along, and I feel like I am the person that she's talking about in the story, though, obviously I'm not a girl, I'm a guy. But still, the fact of the matter is, I feel that way.

To me, emo is that song that sends chills down your spine. The one that makes you think, and the song that you can listen to a year from the first time you heard it, and still feel emotions from it.

What songs/artists send chills down your spine, or would fit the description of 'emo' for you?

Typically whiny, self pitying pieces of shit, but that's because any and all emo people I know personally are rich bastards...

To me, emo is whiny shit played by whiny bitches..

.. Recently though, some hardcore with emo influence has turned out okay, but really - "Emo" as a genre and/or subculture has got to be the biggest fuck-up yet.

To me Emo is what the socially inept people listen to. Avril Lavegne is what horny teenagers watch and not listen. Why Canada Why!

I don't know what "emo" music is supposed to mean. Emo, short for emotional. Emotional music? Music played with real emotion? IT'S ALL SUPPOSED TO BE LIKE THAT. So I don't know what Emo music is supposed to sound like.

I do know what and who is generally thought of as an "emo band" however. So, as for what I think of the genre label "emo" and who is grouped into it, howeverI think this:

"Emo is a bunch of bands trying to be The Smiths and failing miserably."

Here's AllMusic's take on emo:

I had always thought that "emo" was for "emote" to indicate that it's prior break from previous punk was that the vocalists went for expressive lyrics (yes, about emotions) as opposed to the barks and growls of the Sex Pistols and Black Flag. So in this light, guys like Bad Religion sort of set up emo, guys like Weezer were the high point of the genre, and today, we've got guys like Green Day turning to "punk lite"-type emo.

I really don't buy emo as a genre though. I think "Pop Punk" is a more fitting description, seeing as how emo basically weds punkish instrumentals with popish vocals. Like Avril Levigne (spelled wrong and I don't care) or Blink 182.

Just my view.
