Am I a prude?

Recently I have noticed myself becoming increasingly appalled about the sort of images that appear on day time TV. Is it acceptable that MTV shows videos with young women dancing about in next to nothing during the day time? I'm getting sick of all the double entendres alluding to sex in every single advert. All I can think about when I see stuff like that during day is: "How would I explain that to a five year old?". Has TV gone too far, or am I just becoming an old prude? (I'm a 22 male btw).

I don't think the 5 year old should be watching MTV anyways, he should be limited to PBS and the cartoon channels and such.. or no TV at all.

Well, if it helps, I've had to stop watching tv altogether because the ads bugged me so much. Guess I'm a prude too, which is weird considering my fluffy handcuffs and various other things.

On second thoughts, I probably stopped watching tv more because I spend too much damn time here on NS. More of a geek or nerd than prude. Yeah... that makes more sense.

My official answer was 'no, you aren't a prude', by the way :p

I don't think you're a prude, it's not just TV, standards in general are slipping, I hear little five year olds uttering expletives that I didn't know until I was 16
And I'm 18 btw

I was unaware that MTV still played music videos, especially during the daytime. Now MTV2, they still play music now and again...

Then again I find the music they play more offensive than the videos, I mean, who the HELL listens to some of that crap? Is it so hard to play GOOD music???

Oh well, I hardly watch TV anymore anyways, it is all just crap. So, if it offends you don't watch...they just lose one more person staring at their (horrible) ads.

But, really, why should sex be offensive? Violence, sure. But sex? Never did quite get that...but hey it is a free country, do as you like. That might be slightly prudish though...

It's not so much the idea of sex as the combination of "LOOK AT ME! I AM A WHORE! BUY THIS PRODUCT BECAUSE YOU LIKE MY BODY" and the whole "in ads, where you can't really make a conscious effort to avoid it" (well, not true. You can stop watching tv, or do stuff during the ad breaks or what not... but that's often a pain in the arse).

Personally, if I'm looking for random sex, I'll get a porno. Advertising should be, as far as I'm concerned, nothing but text telling the consumer what's being sold, for how much, and where. Everything else is just annoying.

Nope, not a bit. But please, speaking as a twenty some year old guy... we can't lose you to the pre-pubescent teens; stop watching MTV!! (lol)

For the porn comment: Exactly my point, if I want to see sex, I watch porn, not MTV... It isn't neccessary for sex to be on TV and to be frank, watching some whore like that chick from the black eyed peas grind people doesn't exactly do it... nope, not a bit, it more of descusts me to think that kids that I see every day (I'm a teacher, btw) look at these and think, thats what I have to be like to be cool. Kids won't often admit they're thinking that, but a lot are.
As for the ads thing, that's exctly what dumb people buy though, the most reapeated, annoying ads get the most sales.

MTV2 is possibly worse than the original because it's basically the same channel MTV used to be... VH1 is the only channel I can watch and the "shows" suck royally, so I listen to the shitty music and wonder, what happened to *sings* U2, and Blondie (just joshing...) actually I think what happen, to Morrissey? Live? Sting? U2?

TV definitely has gone beyond what is morally appropriate, but I don't believe it should be regulated by anything other than parents with the capacity to use the on/off switch. There should be truth in advertising protection... i.e. if a network claims to be "family friendly" they need to define that clearly in their advertisting and live up to their definition so that people aren't surprised by what they find.

what's wrong with selling products using your body? why would that be more wrong than selling things with words?

I find most of those videos boring and unimaginative, but than again most of the stuff on tv is boring and unimaginastive, regardless of the degree of nudity.

You're not a prude, but we have to acknowlegde that television doesn't run what won't sell. MTV knows its' audience. Turn the channel, and, when you have kids, block those channels you deem inappropriate. This is how my family handles it.

Also know you can have talks with your children about the U.S.'s accelerated culture of sex. Explain to them what is acceptable and not (even if other families accept some or all of this garbage). My kids seem to get it. They prefer being kids to being sexed up preteens at 8.

Sorry, it's much worse than that...your becoming a fundamentalist, right wing, born again holy roller. This is only the first stage however so there is some hope. Strap yourself into a chair, turn on MTV and stare unblinking for 24 hours. You'll fell much more degenerate er ...I mean normal afterwards. :)

yeah, i suspect that it's not the actual sex that bothers you so much, but the prepubescent use of it to try to convince you to buy crap you don't need. 'use this product and you'll have hot chicks crawling all over you' as if we're all a bunch of morons. or 'if you want someone to care about you, or have a fun time, you've got to look really sexy.'

really, though, as the others have said, back away from the tv set. it kills brain cells.

Um...You might be a prude. This is true. Complaining about rampant displays of suggestive sexual acts in media is not a sure-fire sign of it though.

There is a considerable backlash against such things now, as American culture retreats from sexuality in pop media. Its a cultural phenomenon, and you're part of the culture. Look for the displays and your opinions getting more extreme for maybe another year or so, as the people in MTV and elsewhere get increasingly unable to pull in large audiences with sex, and compensate with more sex.

you are free to dislike whatever material doesn't sit well with you, but why you would choose to be bothered by sex is beyond me. if you don't like MTV programming then don't watch it. if you don't like TV ads then don't watch them (i know i don't sit through commercial breaks except during the superbowl), or feel free to write letters to companies that you feel are making poor choices with their ad campaigns.

one question, though: why should it be a problem to explain sex to a 5 year old? i knew how sex worked when i was younger than that, and it never bothered me or my parents. i don't get why so many people think that telling kids about sex is wrong or dangerous or icky...it's a natural part of life, and can be a wonderful part of life if the parties involved are compassionate and informed, so why should we be afraid our kids will learn about it? honestly, if you don't feel comfortable discussing sexual things with a 5 year old then you should never have children, since studies have repeatedly shown that ignorance is the biggest danger to kids when it comes to sexual situations.

I am not bothered by, in fact I find it quite interesting and would certainly welcome any (well almost most any I do have standards) chance to further my education. :D

But it's not explaining sex to a 5 year old that's the problem; it's explaining to them why the woman on the telly is faking an orgasim in order to promote a shampoo; it's explaining to them why the woman in the Eric Prydz (this vidoe is played at lot at the gym I go to) video is sugestively pulling a towel between her thighs; it's explaining to them that every joke that they don't get is infact some allusion to a meeting betwix crotches.
It's not just on MTV either (which to sit the record straight I don't really watch: I watch BBC News 24, or when I want to laugh: FOX News), I only picked MTV and its kind (Smash Hits, The Box, Shitty Shite music inc) becuase its full of people (like the crack-hoor from the black-eyed peas as somebody else previously mentioned) grinding their crotches against the camera.
I openly admit that sex is a beautaful thing, but you must surely realise that what I'm talking about isn't sex, it pure carnal desire - served on a plate like a some rancid steak. This stuff is fine for adults but I honstley don't think it should be on telly till after dark.

Dude, when Lifetime has an "educational program" for women about how to fuck men up the ass with a strap-on, you can say that TV has "gone too far". In the meantime, if you don't like what you're seeing, change the channel. I got annoyed with all the crap that was on TV back in 1996, and I haven't watched TV since. I didn't get pissy or complain, I just stopped watching.

I find it very interesting that the countries with the most sexual content/nudity on TV have the healthiest attitudes towards sex and lower rates of teen pregnancy/STDs/etc. than the US.

Maybe if we didn't make it so much of a taboo issue, kids wouldn't think of it as such?

And if you are worried about how to explain something to a five year old, you probably shouldn't have one until you can figure it out. Here's a tip: be honest.

If all you can think about when exopsed to images of an erotic nature and "adult situations" is "How would I explain that to a five year old?" and you are only 22... I think that you might possibly have a few medical issues. Or, yes, you are a prude. I don't mean to be rude, but you did ask a very blunt question about a rather mature subject so my answer is blunt and direct.

If you honestly feel that TV has gone too far at your age, there's a serious issue at work and it ISN'T 5-year old children. And what about the children? I don't think what's available to be watched on TV should be chosen on its suitability for viewing by minors. To even consider sanitizing TV so that it shows nothing that isn't suitable for viewing by 5-year-olds by ANY person's gauge of what that might be, is just stupid. I'm not even going to say what I think of people who are too lazy to monitor and choose what their crotchfruit are watching and doing. It's just too ugly.

I STRENUOUSLY object to consistantly having my entertainment options narrowed, dumbed down and sanitized by a pack of so-called moralists to suit their own limited, biassed and utterly unstimulating tastes. Let them watch what they like and leave the rest of us to see what we choose to see. I won't start a stink to have "Little House On the Prairie" and whatever "reality" drivel they want to rot their brains with banned from TV if they keep their fat little paws off what I feel like watching.

You don't like anything that's on? Turn off the damned TV and read a book for Chrissakes.
