It's easy, highlight the smile and it looks like a frown. I have a Windows XP, so if you have a differnt PC and it doesn't work, that may be why.

I can't even highlight the smiley in the first place. It won't let me.

it's not a computer OS thing i don't think.
i'm on AOL (gasp, i know) on windows 2000 and it works. it's probably more of a perception thing. it doens't look INCREDIBLY different but it does look more like a sad face.

(Heh, I was going to reply to this when it was still fresh, but after hitting Submit, I was greeted with the "You are not logged in...blah blah" page, and my post was lost... Well, I was so disgusted, and out of time, that I didn't bother to type it again then... However, since I had gone to so much trouble, I wanted to post it today, anyways... So here goes, again...)

This discovery can be pretty easily explained (not that this makes it any less of a super awesme find! lol)

What's happening here can be chalked up to the dither that is used to highlight selected images...

A "dither", for those that don't know, is a pattern of different colored pixels (usually a "checkerboard" arrangement) that is used to approximate another color... For instance, you can alternate red and blue pixels to make a pseudo-purple, white and black to make gray, etc...

Well, you can also make a "shadowed out" selection dither by alternating black and transparent pixels, and that is what is being used in this case...

The black pixels in the dither overlay line up just right with the pixels in the smiley face to make it look like a sad face... The original smiley is still there, but it is being "masked" by these added pixels...

For better illustration, the following picture shows the smiley, blown up 3x in both unselected, and selected styles... I've also included a version where the dither pixels are changed to another color (blue), to better show where they are covering the picture, and where the original picture is showing through... Next to that, is that same alternate example, but with the original smiley's black pixels restored... And finally, the last section is a simple example of a black and white dither...

(Note that the above image is hosted on a GeoCities account, and may or may not show up, due to daily bandwidth limits and such... But oh well...)

Bah. That's ruined my enjoyment of the happy/sad metamorphosis ... It's like the day I found out rainbows were simply diffracted light, and nothing to do with leprechauns :( I'm repressing your post for the infantile purpose of being able to point and say "Cool!". :D
Oh, and I can tell you that the happy/sad trick doesn't work on an iMac.
