Congratulations Microsoft!

Yes, you heard me right. Congratulations!

What for?

Well, for having the business accumen to recognize a golden opportunity when it sees one. When you are making a fortune marketting a bug-filled OS to the world - to the delight of hackers everywhere - do you know what they have decided to do?

why, get into the antivirus business of course! (http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&ncid=&e=6&u=/ap/20050106/ap_on_hi_te/microsoft_antivirus)

Sure, some pople might say that the ethical thing to do would be to stop selling crap and just fix the damn OS so it wasn't so vulnerable. But I say "kudos to you Bill!" for having the strength of character to ignore ethics in favour of making a buck.

Because lord knows he could use the money.

And to think that some people have the nerve to say that capitalism has failings. What the hell do they know?

Microsoft: Proof positive that, when left unfettered, businesses will respond to the needs of the people.

While I don't adore the Microsoft company, blaming good old Billy for every decision is really a bad idea, because he hasn't really been the manager in charge of such decisions for several years now. In fact, it was when he stopped being manager that the product line went down in quality; I don't know about you, but Windows 95, at it's time, was simply the best OS out there. He stopped making the decisions shortly after, and ever since it's been going downhill.

Gates isn't that bad of a person. He's donated more to charities and foundations over the past four years than most countries have via foreign aid.

As much as Microsoft makes the vein in my head throb I must say I'm not too worried about this. The only place where it is dangerous is in the antitrust department. It should be optional to install and not like IE or WMP which have a history of being embedded into the OS.

If it is indeed free and not full of holes, and best yet, if it WORKS then all it can do is jarr the antivirus community into producing something that has to beat it.

Time will tell. Detail are lacking.

And it probably never occured to him (or his accountants) that he could write off all that tax-expense, donations... etc.

Yes... he's probably the messiah, too.

I seriously doubt he pledged to give away 95% of his wealth simply to write it off on taxes.

What he SAID he would do, has no direct bearing on what he HAS DONE.

Also - how exactly was it worded? If he pledged to give away 95% of his 2003 wealth... well, he's probably doubled that wealth by now anyway, so... where is the big hardship?

Finally - even if he turns out to be the biggest philanthropic donator (in percentage terms) ever... doesn't affect the fact that Microsoft is a huge oppressive body that is fleecing the punters. So - basically... Bill Gates has pledged that we poor-microsoft-users are going to doante large amounts of money... and he is just a 'facilitator'.

While we can debate this to death, get your facts straight. Bill Gates probably has no involvement in this, or his company. Why? He retired as CEO. His current position of chairman has far less power than even a CFO, or a COO.

You're right, he hasn't given away 95% yet. All he's given so far is about 27 billion. (http://www.gatesfoundation.org/AboutUs)

So, what was that... 50% of his 2003 fortune, and probably a single digit percentage of his current fortune?

I know he's mega-rich and everything, but... if you met him, you'd not be able to take your eyes off his fringe would you? And then it'd just be "Oh my god, maybe it's a wig! Is it a wig? It looks like a wig... Maybe it is? No! Or... God should I reach over and give it a good firm pull?"

Well that's my opinion on the whole situation.

Actually, he's a bit of a pauper right now. In 1999, he had $100 billion. Now he has $50 billion.

You only get about a 50% return or so on most donations, so a pretty stupid policy.

Bill Gates and Microsoft have created countless jobs and an incalculable amount of wealth for the entire world economy. Gates' wealth is tied up in msft and other companies, which does more than charity.

to turn the topic on to more fun note rather than debating the morals etc. of amassing most of the worlds money under the most enormous mattress, how about trying to work out how you would spend say, $100 billion in a outrageous fortune kinda way.

except you will be using IE every single time you view an html-based help file as they rarely open in Firefox when using the "help" button in an application and you can't control what application the "help" button calls.I know,I removed IE (using some groovy software) and I couldn't view half my help files. That was when I realised that you could open them in Windoze Explorer as can you go to ANY website just by typing it into the address bar.Oh NO!Windoze Explorer IS Internet Explorer with a few less plug-ins.It can't be removed, uninstalled etc. etc.The iron grasp of Microsoft's "optional" integrated software. This is why I don't like Microsoft along with the untested, buggy software (that shouldn't even be allowed to be sold when it doesn't work......would you buy a car that had brakes that worked some of the time?) that nearly all users are forced to use because they don't have the knowledge that there is anything else that can be used as a alternative.

And if Microsoft didn't give money to charity, when they virtually control the entire of the world's computing market, there would be the biggest public outrage.

Damn Bill Gates and all his little minions.

Actually, the article states that the initial release is a freebee, but that "The program, with monthly updates, is a step toward plans by Microsoft to sell full-blown antivirus software later this year. "

So, the question becomes - will they become more interested once they are selling this new product in generating extra revenues through it by focusing energy on it when new security holes in their core OS products are discovered? Or will they keep thier priority on fixing the OS?

Time will tell.

I just want to remind all of you that the alternative exists. WINE can run on Solaris, Linux or FreeBSD and is an implementation of the API of windows.
Not an emulator, an implementation. It means that it does the same job but it's not Microsoft.
Wine is to Windows what AMD is to Intel. They just make something similar and compatible. Try it.

He is correct; IE is basically windows, as both folders and the IE itself have an address bar. They run off the same concept of the explorer. Hell, Windows IS IE.

But yeah, firefox is tastier than IE. And I like the tab thing, thats sweet.
Did I mention no popups?

Oh, I'll switch to anything other than windows... just get it to play FFXI and I'm all set.
