Sheriff Joe Arpaio

TO THOSE OF YOU NOT FAMILIAR WITH JOE ARPAIO - HE IS THE MARICOPA COUNTY SHERIFF AND HE KEEPS GETTING ELECTED OVER AND OVER.

THIS IS ONE OF THE REASONS WHY:

Sheriff Joe Arpaio (in Arizona) who created the "tent city jail":

He has jail meal s down to 40 cents a serving and charges the inmates for them.

He stopped smoking and porno magazines in the jails. Took away their weights. Cut off all but "G" movies.

He started chain gangs so the inmates could do free work on county and city projects.

Then he started chain gangs for women so he wouldn't get sued for discrimination.

He took away cable TV until he found out there was a federal court order that required cable TV for jails. So he hooked up the cable TV again only let in the Disney channel and the weather channel.

When asked why the weather channel he replied, so they will know how hot it's gonna be while they are working on my chain gangs.

He cut off coffee since it has zero nutritional value.

When the inmates complained, he told them, "This isn't the Ritz/Carlton. If you don't like it, don't come back."

He bought Newt Gingrich' lecture series on videotape that he pipes into the jails.

When asked by a reporter if he had any lecture series by a Democrat, he replied that a democratic lecture series might explain why a lot of the inmates were in his jails in the first place.

More on the Arizona Sheriff:

With temperatures being even hotter than usual in Phoenix (116 degrees just set a new record), the Associated Press reports: About 2,000 inmates living in a barbed-wire-surrounded tent encampment at the Maricopa County Jail have been given permission to strip down to their government-issued pink boxer shorts.

On Wednesday, hundreds of men wearing boxers were either curled up on their bunk beds or chatted in the tents, which reached 138 degrees inside the week before.

Many were also swathed in wet, pink towels as sweat collected on their chests and dripped down to their pink socks.

"It feels like we are in a furnace," said James Zanzot, an inmate who has lived in the tents for 1 = years. "It's inhumane."

Joe Arpaio, the tough-guy sheriff who created the tent city and long ago started making his prisoners wear pink, and eat bologna sandwiches, is not one bit sympathetic He said Wednesday that he told all of the inmates: "It's 120 degrees in Iraq and our soldiers are living in tents too, and they have to wear full battle gear, but they didn't commit any crimes, so shut your damned mouths!"

Way to go, Sheriff! Maybe if all prisons were like this one there would be a lot less crime and/or repeat offenders. Criminals should be punished for their crimes - not live in luxury until it's time for their parole, only to go out and commit another crime so they can get back in to live on taxpayers money and enjoy things taxpayers can't afford to have for themselves.

He's a corrupt piece of shit. He's a former DEA officer. His guards have killed inmates attempting to enforce his policies. He's got nowhere near enough guards in tent city. He's abused his law enforcement power to go after political opponents. He spends all his time doing PR for himself. He thinks that jail is supposed to be punishment, whether or not the inmates are convicted or awaiting trial. There's more.

And yet this treatment gives no reform to the criminals.

I admit the maltreatment may give some of them pause to reoffend but, having known a few prisoners myself from childhood I can say there is a psychological (if not economical - stealing and dealing to stay alive for example) reason behind crimes. Some of them fuck up on purpose (they may not realise its on purpose) in order to be punished because they see themselves as worthless. Increased punishment may actually attract them back to the Hell prison after they are released. I remember one time hearing that a warden(?) who gave prisoners pink uniforms and green food actually saw an increase in returning prisoners after his changes were made. Wouldn't surprise me if this was the same guy.

I say hellish punishment is good (theoretically) but it should be supported by reform, probably presented in a much more comfortable area. They would take it more seriously for certain if the 'right path' were more pleasing than the 'wrong path'. I remember watching a program on The Learning Channel (or Discovery Channel, one of those) where they showed survival training in the military: harsh conditions for a month (I think) and at the end they were brought in comfort to an area where they saluted the flag and other patriotic nonsense. Classic brainwashing and conditioning/reconditioning. It could be useful in prison scenario (though I wouldn't give them military training :p ).

Oooh, neat. Info about this guy I needed. I knew his methods were harsh and his methods did go right into sadism, I was on the fence though if he was actually crazy, but now I know.

Punishment != reform. Reform = Reform.

Without rehabilitation these prisoners will likely reoffend. I don't think he cares either way though.

Of course you do, what am I thinking?

It's just so fucking ironic it's making me laugh so hard I've now got to take a leak. Hoo boy. I should have seen this coming, I don't know why I didn't think of it. America, with warden Arpaio in charge.

I like this guy. I really doubt that he will get very many repeats given the horrible conditions. And it's nice to have the prisoners working. Then they're actually paying their debt back to society, rather than just loafing on the taxpayers' bill.

I heard that the Army prison at Leavenworth is the last one in the country that still has the prisoners break rocks. They have basically no returns. Big surprise there. And about time someone did the same thing in the civilian world.

You've got an Arizona Prison population locked up for over 60% non-violent offences (see drug possesion, marijuana distribution, silly mandatory minimums). I've got a problem with the majority of this percentage being in Jail in the first place, but you throw in some ass-hat meglomaniac sadist . . .

As Russian author Fyodor Dostoevsky wrote, "A society should be judged not by how it treats its outstanding citizens but by how it treats its criminals."

The worst part is we, in typing and reading this, are lending credence to said ass-hat, which is exactly the reason he keeps getting re-elected. Quick, name your Sheriff? Name recognition is the stuff. The press is a kind mistress. And no publicity is bad publicity.

The Phoenix NewTimes is a free weekly paper that usually has only about 1 or 2 serious in-depth articles per issue. The articles are almost always obviously biased. The rest of it is movie, music, resturaunt reviews, and ads for strip clubs. I'm sure most of the staff vote Democrat, if they vote at all. However, they aren't exactly consistant partisans.

They have little kind to say about our Democrat govenor, and they have written somewhat favorably about our Republican Maricopa county attourney. Yes, they are completely unapologetic about their opinion of Republican Maricopa county sherrif, Joe Arpaio, but it's got nothing to do with his party affiliation.

Jail is not prison. People who have not been convicted of a crime end up in jail if they are arrested and can't make bail. I hope one of those folks who is found not guilty files charges against Arpaio.

I happen to live in Scottsdale...Sheriff Joe scares the bejeezus out of me. He once had juvenile chain gangs working digging graves, for fuck's sake. The man's unbalanced. His hellish prison conditions will only get criminals more angry at society, they'll just blame authority and the rest of the community for putting them in such degrading conditions.

YOU END UP IN JAIL FOR COMITTING CRIMES DUMBASS!

Do the crime, do that time. Don't like it? well make sure you don't come back, and prehaps try and do something with yourself.

I'd rather see many of our hardcore offenders swinging from a noose, and many of our " light " offenders doing hard time, keep it real and make them work for most likely the first time in there lives, chances are they won't be back.

I hope someone takes, him down, and takes him out, the sooner the better. This as*hole is evil incarnate, and the fact that he is so popular in the US gives the lie to all that 'this is not who we are' crap you heard from the gov. after the torture scandal overseas.
If you heard, on one of those never-ending Nazi-era documentaries on the A&E/History channel, about some concentration camp official who'd had the same attitude to his prisoners you would think it was appalling abuse. And if you read that Martha Stewart was chained spread-eagled against a steel fence under a 118 degree sun because she refused to work, you'd think that was outrageous.
With any luck, one of you who supports this sh*t will be falsely accused of some crime and kept in a chain-gang while awaiting trial.

Don't mind the idea of this treatment for people convicted of a second or third offence, as they have had a chance to reform, but for people yet to be proved guilty and first offenders (esp those on none serious charges) can't agree with it.

Hey, dumbass. It's not only lefties that have it out for him. The Arizona Republican party is not very fond of him and tried to get his challenger to win in the primary election. And, you can go to jail before you're found guilty of any crimes, and in some cases without any charges being filed at all.

Torture Chamber (http://www.phoenixnewtimes.com/issues/2002-03-14/news/nelson.html) - an article about the third mentally ill man killed by Joe's jailers.

It's also important to point out that there's much more to complain about this particular dictator than his jail policies.

Dog Day Afternoon (http://www.phoenixnewtimes.com/issues/2004-08-05/news/feature.html) - The Sherrif's office burn down a house, wreck a car, and kill a dog to make a misdemeanor arrest.
Goon Squad (http://www.phoenixnewtimes.com/issues/2002-09-19/news/nelson.html) - Some of the Sherrif's history of abusing his power to go after political enemies.
Pariah Joe (http://www.phoenixnewtimes.com/issues/2004-10-21/news/dougherty.html) - On what Joe did to his oponent in the 2004 Republican primary.

And that's not all...

Wrong....rehabilitation does not work in most cases. Most criminals are predisposed to commit crimes, they are just not wired the samne way we are.

In the years I have worked in Law Enforcement I have come to the realization that jail/prison serves it's best purpose by keeping the criminals away from the victim...the rest of society. If they are inisde they can not hurt another victim.

One of my cases I have now, the defendant has been commiting violent crimes against people since October 1970...who will his next victim be? If he was in jail/priosn over those years like he should have been (juries suck :headbang: ) how mnay victims would have been spared pain?

It is amazing how most people who cry about jails/prisons change their mind once THEY become the victim...I see it all the time.

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joe_Arpaio

Arpaio served in the United States Army between 1950 and 1953 and according to an April, 2001 article in Harper's Magazine, he claimed to be a veteran of the Korean War, but in fact spent the duration of the war in France. Following his 1953 discharge from the military, he moved to Washington, D.C. to work for the city's police department, after which he left to work on the police force of Las Vegas, Nevada. In 1956, he married his wife, Ava. Arpaio obtained a job with the United States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) where he worked for more than two decades in a job that saw him stationed for a time in Turkey and Mexico. At the end of his career, he was named head of the Arizona branch of the DEA and served in that capacity for four years before taking retirement.

Bullshit. You go to jail for suspicion of doing bad things. Many people in jail are still awaiting trial. A good percentage of them will be found innocent. He's punishing innocent people along with the guilty.

Exactly, and he thinks it 'unfortunate' that his inmates occasionally turn out to be innocent. I don't think he grasps the concept of innocent until proven guilty. Considering his many many years in law enforcement, that's pretty f-ing scary.
