I finished playing Half-Life 2 last night, and I have some questions, due to te fact I haven't played Half-Life.
And in true FPS style, I have shot, but now it is time to ask questions.

Who are the Combine?
What are the headcrabs? Why are they there?
Who is the G Man?
What was Black Mesa about?

The Combine are the soldiers that you kill in HL2 (as far as I know).
Headcrabs are the really small enemies which jump up at you, they're suppost to be there I suppose to use humans as host bodies to make the "zombies"
The G man is the guy with the suit and the briefcase who you see at in the intro and right at the end.
Black Mesa was a research institute in which the first game was based, its where the aliens are released in the first place.

1. The combine are the earths oppressors, called benefactors by Dr Breen, the leader of earth

2. Headcrabs are a spawn from Black Mesa

3. Gman is Freeman's employer. He hired Gordon after black mesa(some may say he was already his employer before black mesa, but that is more of opinion)

4. Black Mesa is a research area in which Gordon accidently unleashed aliens onto the world.

The Combine are the beings from another dimension that have landed and taken the Earth as hostage. Dr. Breen brokered the peace between them and thus got a power position.

Head crabs are from HL1. Since Black Mesa was never cleansed, the headcrabs still run around, turning people into zombies. The combine likes to put a few of them into shells and launch them into rebel-controlled zones.

The G-Man is the guy who was watching your progress in Black Mesa and someone sets up "jobs" for you to complete. HL3 much...

Black Mesa and the Resonance Cascade Scenario are what brought the headcrabs and the lightning things into our world from the Xen universe. The only thing from HL1 in HL2 is Eli, head crabs, zombies, G-man and any mention of the Black Mesa incident.

And Dr Kleiner and Barney. You forgot Barney!

Ravenholme. I'm suprised they didn't have that in HL1. Did they mention it in passing at least?

"We don't go to Ravenholme anymore"

I guess it was the first city to be overtaken by the crabs and has no background other than being close to Black Mesa.

Black Mesa was nuked by those cool looking Black-Ops blokes. At then end of HL1 there was an invasion of Xen by humans, remember? We probably captured headcrabs and breed them specifically as bio-weapons.

It couldn't possibly be near to black mesa. Black mesa was in America, and City 17 is in Europe. since you don't cross an ocean at any point, and it's a short journey from Elis house to Ravenholme, it's nowhere near mesa. I think it's just a generic town that resisted. After all, the other cities are called 17, and 5, etc, so that would have been given another name if it was part of their settlements.

Yo, I too, had questions about HL2. UNfortunately I got the answers before I finished the game and hated my life (for a second or two) after I ruined the storyline. But since you beat the game I have no problem giving you this link

http://fragfiles.org/~hlstory//

enjoy!

P.S. And I believe that City 17 is in NorthEastern Europe/Asia. Which poses a question that just this moment popped into my head:
If HL2 only took Gordon around Europe and Asia, what was going on in the Americas?

I realize that the programmers could have excluded the Americas because they could not think of any levels to play there, but what if HL3 has something to do with the Americas. As I understand it, after HL2, the rebels still have far to go in pushing the Universal Union off of Earth. Gordon just destroyed 1 Citadel.

I thought City 17 was London.

One of the levels where the resistance was fighting the Combine, I swear I saw Nelsons Column being blown up.

Yes, but that citadel was the main citadel, and us quite a blow against the combine.

What I thought was quite bizaare was, at the last few minutes, when breen is trying to escape, and you look through the teleport bubble thingy, you can just make out the gman. One of those unrecorded sightings, I suppose. There's a lot of pillars, or high rise buildings as well. Whatever they are, it looks high tech. I think that we might see some of that in HL3.

As for the Americas, perhaps. It'd be cool to fight in the ruined UN building that you can see in the newspaper. Maybe there'd be a headcrabbed Kofi Annan... just kidding. But it'd be funny.

Nah, what you saw looked like a Nelson's Column, but since Dr. Breen has complete media control, those things are all over the place. Or as I understand it anyways...hope you did not feel like I was being an arrogant ass.

Playing Half-Life 1 might help you understand it better.
If you are ever interested HL1 is VERY cheap.

Its hard to tell what City17 used to be before the combine invaded. To me at least, it looks like a city either from the Ukraine, Russia, or possibly around estonia, latvia, etc. When you find little posters on the walls in some areas, the writing on them looks very much like russian or ukrainian, and all of the buildings, trains, cars, etc, look very eastern european in design. It is very possible that City17 used to be sevastopol, bordering the black sea. Thats just my opinion though.

And at first, the city does look alot like london, but some of the smaller details seem to discredit that.

I haven't really played HL2 so I don't know really who the Combine is, so can't answer that, but as I love the first one I'll answer the others.

Headcrabs were sort of like the alien things from Alien that put the babies in you, but instead nothing pops out the chest they just take over the body. They came about when the scientists at Black Mesa inadvertently opened a gateway/portal to another dimension (namely Xen, run by the Nihilanth) and released them and a lot of other creatures. Because of that accident, the gateways sort of randomly pop up all over the entire facility.
The G-Man as far as I know is the head of a government faction of some sort, you don't really know who he is in the first game, but he's like from a secret organization or something of that nature. In the end of the first game he actually gives you the option of going under his employment or...the other option...Obviously in the second game you worked for him lol.
Black Mesa was a facility designed underground for the most part. It's primary focus was experimental sciences, namely teleportation, interdimensional gateways, and various chemical and nuclear tests. Most of the scientists employed there don't really know what is going on in full. They sort of stumbled upon the gateways, and then all hell broke loose during and experiment conducted by Freeman, a total freak accident.

At the end of Half Life 2, you realise the G-man is by no means Human, or even Mortal.... :)

I will permit the topic to remain open in NationStates, but I respectfully suggest that you also inquire here (http://www.forums.jolt.co.uk/forumdisplay.php?f=646), as that forum appears to be dedicated to the game Half-Life 2.

Go at these in the reverse.

Black Mesa was a research facility at which Freeman worked. They were experimenting on material from another dimension. Either the Gman or the Admin(Dr. Breen) tried to create a controlled resonance cascade that got out of hand. As Freeman you basically kick the aliens ass. At the end of the game before you go to face the final boss you can hear all the plot related sound quotes. After you beat the final boss the Gman basically kidnaps you and says you're going to work for him. The final boss turns out to be enslaved by the combine, who then invade earth because humans are one of the only other races that has even come close to figuring out intradimensional teleportation. The headcraps are just parasite aliens from another dimension that get teleported to earth when the resonance cascade goes out of control. The combine themselves are basically farming earth for resources. The Gman brings Freeman back 10 years later, for the most part unchanged, although there is speculation that he was given certain enhancements while under stasis. You basically have to drive the combine intrusion from earth.
