This was in a thread a while ago. I'll copy-paste what I said in that thread, http://forums2.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=384565 :)

I have played a few online ones but they're mostly crap.

Here are some non-online games, the first three which you can probably get from www.the-underdogs.org as abandonware that you might find interesting.

Shadow President
Balance of Power
Crisis in the Kremlin
Civilization
Hearts of Iron (Focuses more on the war aspect, it's based around WW2)

Victoria is also a good game, but it's set in the 19th century up until 1920.

Hidden Agenda was mentioned in that other thread, and it's brilliant, but a little ancient looking :)

Conflict: Middle East isn't bad either.

I'd like to see a live action form of nationstates to be honest... where you can actually build a nation from scratch, including the terrain.

Perhaps, one day when Max Barry has made enough money, he could sell the idea to a game maker...

Which one did you play? There's about 5 different games.

(The only time you get a "let me rest" is if you try moving a unit more than it is capable of)

I dunno... it was a mates game. He hated it too, but he had completed the campaign...

Campaign? Hmm.

There's no campaign option in any of the games. You get a couple of scenarios, but no "campaign", the main game is just a random map. Are you *sure* it was civ? :p

There are many non online available.Even Pax Romana is a game like that.

For a sports orientation, I used to do the Yahoo soccer, hockey and golf thing but running virtual sport teams is pain! You do get real results (based on RL stat) but keeping up with players rostering is a pain.

Campaign? Hmm.

Could be talking about the Midgard scenario on ToT. Which brings me onto.

ToT was possibly one of the most cynical games ever made.

Although, I love Civ III

Wow, I didn't know there were so many! I'm noob to the genre... Some of these I've looked at and they don't seem much like Nation States...

To sort of refine my question; what game or games come closest to NationStates in spirit? I'd much rather play with real people then script and a machine, but if there something really in it I'm not 'against' the idear...

I remember a good one, Tropico. Here's a screenshot.

http://web.planet.nl/game/foto/tropico/tropico6-gr.jpg

You could probably get it for about 10 bucks now with the expansion pack. It doesn't have any online play though, but it's still fun. Politics play in. Think of a Cuban version of Simcity.

That game was so much fun to play, unfortunately haven't it in ages, ever since my brother lost the cd, and I haven't gotten around to buying it again.

I might recommend for anyone who hasn't played it yet, Sim City 4 and the rush hour expansion pack. Sim City 4 allows you to create landmasses, be it and island, river valley, or anything your heart desires. The whole concept is basically to build and manage cities, within the region that you have chosen or created, which share and compete for the various resources in that region.
I think it may even have online capablities.

I played some Kings of Chaos clone once that was new at the time. They let you click on your link as many times as you wanted to.

So I did.

I got into the top 100 in the first day, and came back the next to find a shiny new IP ban up. How fun.

Back to the topic, KoC is okay. I used to play it, but you can't really play it for too long. Off and on I'll come back to it for a week or two, but I never remember what my account was, and I'm notoriously bad at reading m handwriting. Yes, my handwriting is bad enough that I cannot read it sometimes.

Wow those games look amazing! Those are strategy or real-time strategy? I know nothing about this stuff... I remember reading about Civilization a while back but it sounded very elaborate and complex... What's a good intermediate game that's like NationStates that has more control the NationStates but not swimming in detail?

I used to love playing Master of Orion and MOO II...but MOO III was a total letdown, after so many years of anticipation...

Just a heads-up, posting links to games like kings of chaos, where you advance in the game by spamming links everywhere are not appreciated. Especially if you spam those links here. :)

I play Dominion also. It's kinda fun you build troops, attack other people, make fun of them because you stole all their land, etc.
