Hi.
I don't know if this is in the right place, but oh well here goes.
I have seen how people use these forums for war roleplay which is cool, but how does a nation figure out how big its army is, what equipment it has and if it has weapons of mass destruction?

economy
population
style of government

generally, the stronger the economy the bigger and better war toys you can buy.

population - a certian percentage of you pop. can be military. What around 5% guys?

style of government - dictatorship, up to 10% of pop in military I think is what is accepted, more democratic = smaller pop in military. Mine is under 1%

Does compulsary military service affect the figure?
also does a nation have to buy weapons or can they build them over time?

5% can be hard to maintain, as it gets expensive. From what I've seen (granted I try to steer clear of the war RPs unless they're CO) it's best to maintain a number just under the accepted percent. THere's a good site for figuring that out. Lemme dig up the link and I'll post it for you.

I think it's expected that they build some for themself over time. I never visited the storefronts.

Anyway, here's the link. Just put your nation in the box, and it will figure out economic stats, as well as bugets. There was another calculator somewhere that would actually list how much of what you could afford, but I haven't seen that for months.

Anytime. :)

There might be some stickies in NS and II that can help as well. Might want to take a look.

Check this as well: http://forums2.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=297064

Also, 10% of the population in the military is for in extremis cases only, and does serious harm to your economy. 5% is a common rule here, but highly unrealistic (except for snaller nations or during major wars), as even that does significant damage to the economy (think DPRK). 1-2% is the common realistic rule for nations larger than 25 million or so.

(There's lots of debate about this topic. Be prepared for many different answers. I tend to enjoy more realistic play, others do not. Find what suits you. :))

See the stickies. They'll tell you all you need to know.

(And BTW, 01_the_machine_city, this probably would have gotten more response in the NS or II forums. General is for non-RP stuff. ;))

Good luck and have fun, both of you!
