I agree whole heartly. Too many threads end up as name calling or abuse because of differing points of view. Personally, I'm just glad I live in a society that allows us to have different points of view.

I don't remember who said it, but one famous author once declared "I've never learned anything from any man who agreed with me."

We should care about conflicting opinions and beleifs, and if we really care about our beleifs, we should really care to challenge and debate them so that they hold up so that we aren't wasting our lives beleiving in wrong things.

It does matter if you are a democrat or republican, it affects our country and the world either for better or worse, and if you are concerned, you should care also.

It does matter whether we are here because of evolution or creationism. One implies the existence of an intelligent creator, and people on the wrong track are either going to spend an eternity in torture in hell or spend their lives preaching false ideas and false morality, only corrupting those they affect if they are good at it.

If we as people really care about one another, we care about challenging one another's beleifs and proclaiming our opinions to influence people with our way of thinking, if we really think it's right. At the same time we should welcome such challenges from others to hone and refine our own beleifs and reflect on what we are spending our lives beleiving and preaching.

As for people that can still in some airy way 'respect' others even though they fiercly disagree with every one of their beleifs (would you respect someone who beleives in decapitating children?) I would hardly want that kind of a friend at all. They would value a National Socialist just the same as they would Ghandi, if beleifs truly weren't an issue.

I am totally on your side as far as wanting to get along (in general, but not by sacrificing my values and judgements and morality), not wanting so much ignorance, insults and name calling, and wanting the world to be a better place. I agree with that, and respect you and all the other posters in this thread and everyone here who wants that at as well... because I share the same beleif.

I myself am quite an idealist, but this is just silly. Life naturally competes, and humans are no exception. In fact, we're the worst of all organisms. "Can't we all just get along?" is one of the weakest and most pathetic questions...time philosophising is much better spent in other areas. Until we evolve further, and probably not then, we will continue to fight and bicker over the silliest things.

Any experienced Generalite will tell you that it is categorically impossible for NSers to get along. Any threads that generate agreement end quickly and are forgotten. Only the strong topics with vicious and vigorous debate attract interest and are perpetuated...until locked. People who advocate getting along tend to be ignored, since it's not nearly as much fun as arguing.

i would love for people to get along, just nobody else seems to want to.
and you've got the right ideas there - stick to em. there's no such thing as too idealistic. together we can build a better world... if anyone else would let us :(

Very true.

Personally I enjoy a good argument ... but generally, I like to get along. Unless it's with radical green politicians who harass you with environmentally-unfriendly laminated leaflets, or people who come door-knocking to chastise me for my non-belief in their religion, or universities deciding not to run the third-year maths course you've been working towards for the last two years, dammit! :headbang:

I am a very idealistic person, but i do think there is a difference between liking someone and believing in them, and respecting their opinion. I respect everyone's right to say what they want, even if it means expressing hatred for one group of people, however i could never be friends with that kind of person. I can't even respect them as a human being. However, I never resort to insults or namecalling, and i am polite to everyone, unless they give me a reason not to be. I don't hate anyone, but there are plenty of people i don't have compassion for. The opposite of love isn't hate, it's indifference. If you are a basically decent human being, you will always have my respect, but you have to earn it first.

Nice idea, but it won't ever work; humanity can't manage it. And personally, I don't want to get along with some people here; there are some here--I won't mention by name--that I despise and I don't want to have anything to do with them.

Sounds agreeable. Treat people with general good will, but don't agree with them at the expense of your own values.

To put it simply:

Everyone is equal. No man is great, no man is terrible, we're all gray in our own way. People must realize that this means there is no such thing as Superiority, or the Political Food Chain, Social Classes. Everyone is equal. The only people who may or may not be worse are the people who THINK they're BETTER.

IE: Racists. Honestly, what pisses me off is that most racists think "AMERICA = EQUAILTY", and they're so ept on the bill of Rights, and then they put OTHER PEOPLE DOWN. Like in Animal Farm:

"ALL PEOPLE ARE CREATED EQUAL. SOME ARE JUST MORE EQUAL THEN OTHERS"

Equality comes with being born, and being human. It's against me to say, 'I'm better then them because they insult me,' but isn't that just throwing myself into being a worse person? It's a hard decision...

But to answer the question, I think we CAN get along...its just no one really WANTS to.

as long as free will exists humans will not get along... or unless the population drops from this blasted six and a half billion to like a hundred... then maybe human will get along for the sake... even then... maybe if u drop the pop. to twelve... just dont include anyone like me... *smile*
