Three Words: Federal Communications Commission

These people are the ones that tell us what we can watch on TV and listen to on the radio. I am repulsed by this commission. All it is a tool for the religous nuts to control everybody else. I can't believe you can't say the following words on public tv Sh*t, Pis*, Fuc*, cun*, coc*suc*er, motherfuc*er, and t*ts. There are more words to describe these words then there are. You can't even have woman show her bare back. It is terrible what they do. Also don't forget what they do to howard stern. They fine him for just being on the air. They have been trying to get rid of him for years. What ever happened to freedom of speech. If I want to say these words or watch these people say these words I should. I mean the FCC is a rediculous organization.

You and every other freedom loving individual :)

The FCC thinks it has the right to dictate what we can and cannot watch on television and what we can hear on the radio. It doesn't. It is justified by supporters under protecting children and enforcing moral decency. Whose morals, their morals, probably not my morals. I have the right to watch what I want, and TV stations have the right to play what they want, when they want.

But to appease the other side, I have a solution to the FCC.

The Situation - Overprotective mother, or conservative other hears or sees something they are offended by. EX. :upyours:
My 3 step program to protect these peoples rights not to have to watch or hear that -

Step 1 - Pick up the remote / reach for radio dial
Step 2 - Press buttons for desired channel OR press power on/off button / tune the dial OR switch on/off switch to the off position
Step 3 - That which offended you is gone. Enjoy it!

The way I see it, if you don't want to watch/hear something, you don't have to. But you aren't entitled to censor my speech or my thought. Your rights end where mine begin. So next time anyone sees something they think needs to be censored by the FCC, take a deep breath and follow my program.

All of us over here in Europe simply cannot understand how Americans can get worked up over such trivial things. They are alowed to show just about everything they like over here, but for some reason all of the children have not become mass murdering psycopaths from hearing a few bad words and seeing a few body parts.

Um, yes, you can -- and more frightening, you can have Dennis Franz show his bare bottom. ;)

Without the FCC who will save us from the horror of having to catch a millisecond long glimpse of an aging popstar's nipples!? Who?!

Thats right. If you have ever seen eurotrip on the guys says the US was founded by prudes which is true just look at american culture. The reason why there are skimpy outfits is because we want to see what we can't get anywhere else.

But come on now there was no reason to go over board with the whole thing.

P.S. I can't really answer that question.

I think I am in general agreement with most people one here … FCC is just stupid freedom reducing organization.

I think the practice of warnings should continue (so that parents know there is objectionable material coming up before they have to see it) basically give them a warning … if they choose to watch it (or choose to let their children watch it) it is up to them.

I agree with most of this.

Apparently you can't even say "love" or "pregnant" during the daytime...

I think that nap he's been taking began in 1984 :D

There is nothing that the FCC does that we can't do better ourselves with our remote controls. It's really simple; if people don't like something, they won't watch it. If people want to see something, then it gets showed.

Then the corporations will tailor their programming to match their target audiences. Simple. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that out.

Yup … agreed (I would say maybe just an initial warning would be nice … give a parent a choice to decide before the content is shown … that sort of thing)

Hell there are plenty of competing technologies out there that either are coming built in … or add-ons … such as tivo, vchip tv’s… hell most satellite and cable boxes come with built in content/channel filtering (mine is 4 years old now and it has THAT capability)

Plenty of options if you care

The FCC only responds to complaints. They do not screen tv or radio. You have to have a bunch of old prudes write letters and complain to get a fine. Now these are not just conservatives. Remember that Stern has been fined heavily since the 80's. He received some heavy fines during the Clinton years. I'm a staunch conservative and I find censorship of any sort un-American. Now I agree that boobies shouldn't be shown during Mister Rogers Neighborhood, but some skin during primetime is ok.

BTW if you still think conservatives are the only ones who love censorship, may I remind you that Tipper Gore led the charge to get those pesky little Parental Advisory things on all "offensive" albums, thus keeping them from being sold in WalMart, Kmart. She also believed that rock music was the devils recruitment service, but alas that's for another day.

You are very right in how censoring the FCC is. The FCC released a statement, showingthaT 99.8% of all their hundreds of thousands of complaints last year came from a single parents group. It is this group that has always supplied the FCC with 98+% of their complaints. It is because of this one group, that the FCC censors everything the way it does. Blame the FCC for falling victim to them, but that group deserves the real blame for bitching and moaning over every little thing that goes on on TV. I'll post again if I can find a source, or if some one could help, thx in advance.

I don't believe in government censorship, if there are things you don't want your children seeing or listening to, either change the channel or put parental blocks on your TV or computer. People should not expect the government to babysit their kids. I do agree with warning labels because that way people can arm themselves with the proper information and make the decision of whether or not to watch or listen. Maybe if parents actually sat down and discussed things with their kids, this wouldn't seem like such a big deal.

Hahaha, wow. I wish life were so simple.

The solution: Abolish the FCC, then use the extra funds leftover to put a vchip or a programmable censorship device in every TV. Whether the owner of the TV wants to program the device/censor anything at all is their choice alone, not the government's. This way parents don't have to worry about coming home to their 4 year old child watching 2 drunk girls spank each others' asses or seeing Ahnold blow somebody away...and some middle-aged man who wants to watch 2 drunk girls spank each others' asses can go ahead and watch.
