:( I ask anyone that can afford it, please, donate anything you can to the victims of this horrific tragedy. If you can't afford it financially, then give to them by keeping them in your prayers. Thank you very much for taking the time to read this. God Bless You.

I wish we did....this world is half right.
Its great that we live in a world where people actually care.
We do. Could have fooled me.
We live in a world with massive inequaility, massive poverty.
Donating a few measly dollars, when peoples suffering is obvious does nothing to help cure the massive suffering that was going on before the earthquake and that will continue to go on afterwards.
No doubt making a donation, makes people feel good about themself, like they have done something that actually matters in there life, really is that not the point about the donations, Its not about helping others but about making yourself feel good and being able to show off to others going, hey you know such and such tradgic event, I donated such and such cash to that, am I just not sooo cool.

Excellent point. And what do you do when you're not sitting in front of your computer munching on HoHos? Hmm?

Wow, you turned what I said around into a witty insult against me. Congrations have a special star award for sarcasm you sure earned it there buddy.
Oh and personally I dont eat while sitting at a computer, they really are too different activities, food is a thing to appreciate I fail to see how you could do that while typing and eatigng. Manufactured junk filed snack foods are something else I would turn down as well rather eat something decent than mass produced shit. But hey if you enjoy it all the good for yourself.

I'm more of a peanut butter cup man myself.
If you see an insult in that, my apologies.
It's just that I tend to see far too many people who complain about the evils of the world and how the poor and helpless are taken advantage of by the unscrupulous rich. People who do that complaining from their cozy rooms chit-chatting here on their pricey computer systems.
It frustrates me. DO you know why? Not for the reason you might think. It frustrates me because this isn't the place or the forum to discuss these issues. The place to discuss these issues is in your representative's office. The forum for these issues is among our well-to-do friends who think blowing a few thousand dollars at the local casino is good fun.
Your words here in this forum are every bit as feel-good meaningless and show-offy as those very donations you mock.
So with all due respect, and no insult intended, get off your high horse Mr. Holier-than-thou and either do something about the evils of the world, or calm down and have a taco.

The places of meaning you describe are as worthless as the idea that words at all can change anything they simply dont. I dont type here to go, look aren't I a generous caring soul so your analogy there aptly fails.
Apologies into insults, wordplay all around , cozy rooms, pricy computers when not just slap a big neon sign screaming look I can make obvious observations, the falseness of an empty apology directed into again weak subversion, painting a picture of an insult rather than directly saying it, weak. Sowing disdain an old way of discrediting.
You don't just go out and do something. Everything has a time and a place. So scratch one strawman there. The place for disscussions, the place for ideas is everywhere, all around, one should never stop thinking. Actions have a time, talking to people is never action, never achieves anything, the only good action is action direct.
The fact remains people who donate to the relief funds right now are for the most part utterly pretensious not deserving of anything. There actions are more of a collective insult unto humanity rather than an act of compassion. Its just yet another face of selfish uncaringness in the modern world.

Weird. I read through all of that and only got the words "I don't do anything at all to help solve the world's problems except complain about people not doing enough to solve the world's problems." I guess maybe I'm dyslexic.
EDIT: Finally managed to track down somewhere I can donate here. Will transfer 200 RMB (only about 24 US$ but I am on Chinese wages) to the Red Cross's account when banks open tomorrow.

Such a charming person you are New Libya ( NOT )
so you are saying it's okay to let people suffer for the sins of their goverment?
And Mr. Wadd, LG is a nicer person than I. I've been giving to charities all my life and I'm most likely older than you. Age or tiredness is no reason not to give.

Why donate? Your money is not going to the victims anyway, so why does it matter. Sorry but I'm 62 and I've been giving to church and religious relief charities since I've been 20. So don't tell me to give more when I still give 15% to my church every year, plus 5-8% to other charities. My pension only goes so far.
If the US were hit by a tsunami, would India, Sri Lanka, Indonesia come to help us?
PS-thanks for calling me Mr Wadd! (http://www.labproductions.com/news/authors/lusher/wonderland2.jpg) I appreciate it!

Guess my point was not clear then. I was not complaining about people not doing enough. I was pointing out the lies and disgracefulness of donating for a one time event, when there is much worse stuff happening all the time, wit the donation really only happening to make the doner feel better about themself.

Despite what Kant may think, if they donate now simply so they can feel good, they're still donating.
It's not like the money melts when given out of something other then goodwill and charity.

Uh, your self-righteousness and logic impairment are showing big time. Tell me, oh wise one, if you were starving and had lost all your possessions would you care why someone handed you water and a food packet?

Let's say the donor is, indeed, just donating to make them feel better about themselves. Is that such a bad thing? And is their money/gift any less effective than the one from the person who is consistently giving?

I did both ...
I would do both... but I also have to pay for school, books for the new semester, rent, bills, food, etc. and I'm on a limited budget based solely on financial aid, because I don't work right now.
