Is Voice-acting a good career idea?

I'm curious because I've considered doing voice-acting to tide me through college. I've quite the resume from voice acting for free games made through free game making engines plus some voice acting for some cartoon pilots...that never flew.
My voice has a wide range, but mostly it's quite the deep voice, which you don't run into that much these days; I'm talking about James Earl Jones deep. So, what I'm curious is: would it be a potential career? And I mean in all fields that could use it: cartoons, animated movies, video games, and the like.

Perhaps, especially if you can sing as well. :p

No idea, maybe you can make it. But it's good that your in college, so at least there's something to fall back on if things don't work out.

Give it a try. As it´s not an area that attracts a lot of people, you can get lucky real fast.

I know a voice actor, he says that you have to be exceptionally talented to get top line work nowadawys. A lot of the best jobs are being given to people with distinctive voices that are famous for something else.

Still it sounds fun, so why not give it a go.

Actually, I'm not in college yet; it's one of the things I'm looking at to tide me through once I am.

Don't just limit your opportunities in voice acting to games and cartoons. I'm a subscriber to an audio-book service, Audible.com. I have a rather long commute and listening to a book each day makes the trip not so nerve-wracking. The talent of the narrator can make or break an audio-book. The best one going right now is Scott Brick. He doesn't just read a book, but acts the parts and manages to insert a trace of his own witty personality in each reading. Another really good one is John Bedford Lloyd. He too makes books come alive, like an audio play. Way too many of these audio books are being narrated by people who just read the text with little or no acting.

I've heard that the really good narrators make a good living and are in pretty high demand.

Voice acting is a quick and easy career IF you have a distinctive voice that will land you more jobs and if you have the patience to read the whole script. If you can land the job, go for it.

Oh, that didn't even occur to me. And I keep winning Best of Event in Dramatic Interpretation in Speech Meets; and we're one of the top teams in the nation. Not to mention I believe more than one person commented that I'd make quite the good narrator...and it tends to be a part I get in plays...I'll definitely consider that, thank you.

No problem, glad to help. Just make sure to let me know when you land a narrating gig and I'll buy the audio. I'll be sure to rate the narrator 5-star in my review, too. ;) Good luck!

it has it's pros and cons.
Pro: doesn't matter what you look like. as long as you can speak well and as you said, you have a variety of voice types to use.

Con: Having the voice type is one thing. but using it properly is another. you need to beable to emote through your voice. I've seen some BAD dubbing where you don't know if the person is laughing or crying because the voice doesn't carry the emotion through. Screams of fright are laughable, crys of joy brought Tears of Pain to this listener.

My opinion. Give it a try. you might like it and become very good at it.

Hah, I wish. :D No, I sound more like...well...I'm not too sure. If you want to hear my voice--though it's an audition peice that I screwed up for the most part--go to this link: www.angelfire.com/trek/picardmpc/auditionding.wav

Which is why you copy it and type it directly into your browser. If that doesn't work...use the "Open URL" feature of Windows Media Player and stick the URL in that.

Ever been? I'm quite the devoted fan of Strong Bad. :D
And yes, that is extremely well done voice acting, especially since all of the voices except Marzipan's and the Cheat's video's voices are done by the same person.
