Finally, I've read an article by someone who thought she was an idiot (as much as I believed so). At least the farcical parade of psuedo-intellectuals has been reduced by 1!

There are three kinds of people in the world; those that can count and those that can't.

The fact that you had to go trolling the bowels of the Torygraph to find it speaks volumes.

For the record, I have no idea who this Sontag woman is.

Susan Sontag was an intellectual and a novelist, although she is probably most famous for her essays. Her greatest "crime" was that in a world of shallow, bubble gum pop culture she had the unmitigated gall to approach literature and culture as serious subjects worthy of serious study.

Egad! How did she die? Burned at the stake as a heretic?!?

perhaps when you have actually read something written by susan sontag rather that just a sourgrapes article about her in the telegraph THEN you can comment on her worth as a human being

until then you have no business criticizing her.

Unfortunately, I have read her work. While she may indeed be a novelist (by no means great), she, like many intellectuals, believed that her qualifications as a writer qualified her to speak on a great many things of which she had absolutely no understanding.

What makes for the biggest chuckle is that it was filed on 02/01/2005.

(disclaimer: yes, I am aware that europeans use the metric dating system and put the day before the month, but it still gave me a chuckle)

The article itself was shyte. Takes a big man to write a dissention about someone *after* they've died. I'm sure Susan will get her rebuttal anyway.

I'm no right-winger, but I always found her work to be pretentious and thoroughly lacking in pragmatism and realism. Poseur intellectualism has never impressed me, and she always struck me as someone who took everything except the human condition into account. There were other times when she made declarations without taking crucial facts into account. Her sophistry just never rang true with me.

I found her writing less than engaging, and the heart of her arguments to be somewhat puerile. I don't wish death on anybody, though; so I am not happy she's gone. I just found her worldview to be lacking.

Let's be honest, if she (http://us.news2.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/p/afp/20041228/capt.sge.sfu78.281204194601.photo00.photo.default-278x370.jpg) was a better looking "woman", I may have taken her more serious. I just hate it when ugly chicks try to be bright.

BTW-She's a man, baby!

No! You fool!

Opinion pieces from the Telegraph are to be mocked and ridiculed, not taken seriously!

Most newspapers should be mocked and ridiculed, or so I thought.

As a progammer, I don't pretend to have the answer to world peace, even though I consider myself intelligent. The difference here is that just because she's managed to make a career of writing (a moderately successful one), she thinks she can pontificate - and that people MUST listen to her, or be considered ignorant.

I don't have that problem.

double posts to say: The Independent (UK) The Guardian (UK) and The Japan Times (JP) are not among those that should be mocked.
