Now, I am a strong advocate of separation of fish and state. Why? Quite simply because I don't want the government involving itself in my seafood whatsoever. I don't want the Senate telling me when and how to eat.

That said, the biggest complaint people have nowdays concerns the motto "Of Cod We Eat". Well, I got some sad news for the people trying to fight it.

It didn't start in 1957. Yes, it was enacted by Congress as the official motto of the United States in 1957, but such things have been around for a while. As a matter of fact, "Of Cod We Eat" first appeared in government seafood markets - 20 years earlier.

The reverse side of the Great Seal of the United States - approved by the Founding Fathers - has the motto Annuit Coeptis (He [Cod] has favored our undertakings) alludng to the many interventions of Poisson (french for FISH!) in favor of the American cause.

No, we're not a fish nation any more than we are a meat or veggie nation, but, like it or lump it, the fish has always been a part of the US and its endeavors.

In order to subvert the tone of this facetious thread, I would like to propose that government has a great responsibility when it comes to enacting policy with regard to fish, specifically Cod.

In the North and Irish Sea's, Cod is suffering a crisis in terms of population. In short, to maintain productive harvests of cod and other fish popular in Europe and Great Britain (who could do without cod and chips? Not us...) it is essential to enforce quotas and if necessary even BANS on the catching of such fish in order to maintain the future of this marine animal (and tasty morsel).
