No - all I'm saying is that you have no right to tell me that I cannot say Happy New Year on the 1st of January. Why should I have to celebrate the Chinese New Year when it means nothing to me personally? I have friends who celebrate it - and I wish them a Happy New Year when it comes around, but I don't use their calendar.

I use the internationally accepted one.

Oh, and they wouldn't be offended if you said "Merry Christmas" either since that's celebrated here, too.

This is pointless. There is no earthly reason for anyone to be offended by use of the phrase "Happy New Year." It is the international standard where there are few such standards, and it suits the vast majority of people. We Chinese have little reason to restrict your celebration just because we use both the Gregorian and the lunar calendars, so don't create a problem where none exists.

I guess I should have been more precise.

I guess it's hard to explain. But being fake about something, especially so blatently, causes some people to get pissed off. It's like someone faking to be your friend. Like, "HEY BUDDY, YOU"RE MY BESTEST FRIEND. And you know what? Let's get together later because we're best buds!!" It's so insincere and fake that it only pisses you off instead of making you feel better.

Actually, starting the new year at the start of spring makes a lot more sense than starting it slap bang in the middle of winter. And, as they are based on the winter solstice and the vernal equinoxe respectively, it should actually be New year on December 21st when the days stop getting shorter. the only reason it's a few days late is because they weren't as accurate at predicting these things to the day when they made the Gregorian calendar.

Unless they move January 1st back to the day of the winter solstice then it's every bit as stupid a New Year as April the 1st is.

Actually, Poland and China are very similar:

* Both were once mighty Empires.
* Both have been Communist. (China still is, but I doubt that it will last).
* Both peoples love kielbasa/sausage with cabbage.
* Both have many scientific contributions to the world.
* Both mostly dislike the Russians. :D
* Both languages are pretty much incomprehensible to Westerners.
* Both fought the Mongols, without help from other nations.
* Both were attacked and occupied by Axis Powers.
* Both were abandoned by the West after WW2.
* Both lost their national soverignty by foreign intervention (the Four Partitions of Poland, the Westerns & the Boxer Rebellion).
* Both have had men in space: once. (I'm sure this will change).
* And both are now newly ascendent powers in their continents and in the world.

I'm sure there are more, but I'm kind of out of it.

OK, read this through one more time. This is obviously a joke to poke fun at ourselves. How many threads have we seen that debates the political correctness of saying Merry Christmas? Rather than taking the greeting as a sincere good wish from someone of a different faith, people choose to take offense and raise a big fuss. That is what is happening here. Nothing that KI has said has even remotely appeared to be a serious post. Put aside your verbal knives, put yourself in a good mood, and join me in saying....
