So therefore small stores and chains are forced to charge more, to make any sort of liveable profit.

Gouge their customers, no - make a living yes. And mostly these small stores gave very good customer service - they knew their customers, lived closely among them, extended credit when they could ( and often when they couldn't ).

Hmm, actually I have direct experiience with this in northern Maine. And pretty much they do gouge their customers. Especially the seniors. Then they usually use their position on the local county boards to block development of any other stores. CF. Right Aid Greenville Maine.

In any event, the reason Wal-Mart finds these markets so rich is that only they have the muscle to get in, usually after numerous other smaller stores have been closed out. I have no sympathy. Lie down with dogs, get up with fleas.

Well, not all stores are like that; you can't make a judgement based on one small area alone. And before you accuse me of doing the same, I've been around this country of ours a few times thanks to moves; I've seen plenty of family owned stores and every single one was exactly as she described.

General, I am sorry that you have had bad experiences with small stores in your area.

I'm in Texas, and have patronized small stores all over the state, in both cities and small towns, as has my rather large extended family. We've never had anything but positive experiences with family owned / small / local stores.

We have had bad experiences with Wallyworld.

Experiences colors if not creates our perceptions.

Not all evolution is good, and disapproving of WalMart is not asking the world to give up automobiles ( though the lessening of polution could only be a good thing.)

Wal-Mart goes into a community with alot of small businesses and no other large successful ones. They drop their prices to rock bottom rates so their competition goes out of business. They jack up the prices when the competition is gone.

This doesn't happen when there are other large businesses around them to compete but in areas with ONLY small shops, as they have done in the past, they wipe out everything around them then treat their own employees horribly. It's called "predator pricing" or something like that, I can't remember exactly.

small businesses also have a tendancy to charge more...
primarily because it costs them more to aquire the merchandise, this also gets more extreme the further away from the cities you get, mostly due to transportation costs. Customer service tends to vary from store to store... seeing how their all independent and have no unified standards.
