Personal pettiness!

Personal pettiness.

I left the mod team.... voluntarily. I quit. My goodbye message at the time was public for all to see. The reasons for that I have kept private - so far. Normally that would have allowed me to retain the NS avatar as well as being labelled as a "Retired Mod". I got to keep the avatar. I never got the label.

Clearly I had some personal issues with some members of the team, and they were not going to be worked out. I therefore abandoned being part of the moderating team in favour of returning to what brought me here in the first place - playing the game.

Isn't it odd how the NS avatar just got stripped from my posts on the night when I questioned a ruling by one of the other Mods who was one of the ones that I had clashes with? (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=385862)

I gave nearly two years of my life to this game. I think I did a pretty good job. the players here seemed to agree given that I was voted the most popular Mod, the Queen of General, and the President of General.

The fact that some person (or people) need to stoop to such pettiness to remove such tiny little perks that have been afforded for sevices that I gave of my free time , asking nothing in return.

P.S. There is nothing in this post that violates any NS rules. Any further actions that may follow will only reinforce my opinion of the low tactics in play here.

Edited. OpSec Violation pointed out by Reppy. I edited it out. - Stephanie.

Steph, as you know more than not we don't see eye to eye. But you have always been a decent sort overall. Sorry to hear of the backroom issues and I'm sure it has had it's emotional impact. Politics is always full of petty feifdoms and bloated egos. You know your worth, not just here at NS but in RL too. Chin up there lady and remember it's not only cream that rises to the top.

But I've never really understood why people who simply RP looked down on us who actually wanted to debate real life, I mean should it of not been the other way around? People started to hear things they didn't like, they began to realize that not everyone had the same opinions has them...but they wanted to hurt them...they wanted to see the people they did not agree with...punished...but they didn't have the means...so that lead to the creation of the....

One other thing that should be said - at least Steph was a Moderator who took a real interest in the General Board and did her utmost not to let her personal politics cross over into her moderating decisions. Most of the others are RPers who feel that those of us who indulge in real debate are somehow lessor players than the RPers.

To them, debate on real-world issues that might actually affect our lives is pointless. Pretending to be imaginary critters swinging their privates at each other in pretend wars is where it's at!

Glad to know I've had you all slamming a few doors, too! :D Aside from differences due to geographical locations and cultures, I figure age variance has something to do with it, too. Sometimes us old folks just have to make ourselves heard.

As for the whole RP thing, I'm at a loss to explain it. If you enjoy playing in pretend scenarios, that's great! I enjoy logic games and puzzles and debate and use these to unwind. But, to confuse the importance of "pretend" over "real" is a wonder to me. As my country is so large and varied, we Americans have a tendancy to be ignorant of the views and their basis of other countries'. Conversely, by explaining the basis of opinions leading to some of the actions of the US, hopefully people from other nations can better understand the American psyche. If we didn't trade our opinions we would never grow and develop as thinking beings.

Oh I'm not knocking the RPers. Hey - I ran out and bought the AD&D books when they first came out (damn.. I must be getting old!), and I still enjoy the occassional game of Risk. Games are fun and people's preferences for the game they choose to play are entirely up to them.

I mean.... it's not like they are playing something totally useless.... like golf!

It's the fact that they seem to feel that this is somehow more important than real-world discussions that I am at a loss to explain. If Max hadn't wanted real politics to be discussed, he wouldn't have had this board added to the list....

This is about much more than a disagreement among mods and ex-mods. This is a situation that has been obvious to the population on general, especially as it has revolved around an extemely popular ex-mod. The way this has been handled by NS's moderation staff has raised questions in a lot of peoples' minds as to the fairness of decisions handed out and the amount of personal feelings as opposed to game rules in these decisions.

Like you, I vehemently disagreed with most of Steph's views. But, I had to respect her fairness when moderating these forums.

No, this is not an issue that will have a great effect on the world. But, I believe it does have an effect on the core of NS.

Errrr.... you're telling Steph how the Mods work?

Well, I'm sure she'll be thankful that you cleared that up for her.... your dedication to public service here is admirable! How is it that you were never deleted if you were in such violent disagreement with Steph? You can't possibly complain that she worked with bias if that is the case, and yet you are happy that she retired. All because you disagreed with her politics.

Your political diferences aside - thank you for being the poster-child example of why Steph was respected. Because people like yourself that disliked her and/or her politics were allowed the exact same latitude to post their opinions as those that agreed with her.

You obeyed the rules so you got to stay. People who broke them you got punished - regardless of politics. That was steph's job as a mod as opposed to her input as a player. And according to you - she did it correctly.

She of all people should know how it works, then, shouldn't she? And that public confrontations with the mods historically lead nowhere. I shouldn't have to remind her what the proper procedure is, but she shouldn't have dragged this out into a public setting. Once again, all I'm doing is pointing out what others should already realize, but don't seem to.

Has it occured to you that Steph's position is a little diferent than other players?

Sometimes making things public make it harder for the knife to get driven home.... people are less prone to commit crimes in front of witnesses.

And sometimes people need to be shamed into doing what was right. Steph was a good Mod who left her job of her own free will. She deserves the tag-line and the avatar that has been given to every single other Mod who has left the team. Having that taken away for asking a valid question was petty and personal.

If she were a poor or unfair Mod, with the relationship between you two that you describe she would have deleted you out of the sort of spite that she is being shown. But she didn't did she?

Some members of her old team are letting their personal feelings colour their actions towards her. Frankly - I think that on reflection you might discover that you are doing the same.

The proper way to address getting screwed it to privately message the person who is screwing you and hope that they have a sudden change of heart?

Get real.

The proper way to address this situation is to contact the ADMIN of the site, at admin@nationstates.net, who, last time I looked, outrank the mods. The system exists for a reason, and I really don't see any difference between this and any other time someone has accused the mods of unfair rulings and actions. If you want something done, send an email to admin@nationstates.net, and the admin will review the mod behavior in question.

But how do you know the Admins will act fair?(should of course though) Also do they regularly check things? Few people might know what happened to Steph also if she didn't do this thread (I was oblivious till I saw thread lol)

She of all people should know how it works, then, shouldn't she? And that public confrontations with the mods historically lead nowhere. I shouldn't have to remind her what the proper procedure is, but she shouldn't have dragged this out into a public setting. Once again, all I'm doing is pointing out what others should already realize, but don't seem to.
stating the obvious just to state it isnt hardly intelligent

and just because i see no point in this thread being 5 pages long

You know, vacations are supposed to be just that. I certainly wasn't expecting to have NS blow up in my face (in five different ways no less, we're still dealing with the telegram spammer).

Let me say this formally for all to here:
What we did when we removed Steph's powers after she retired differed in no significant ways from what we did for any other retired moderator.

No ex-mod has been permitted to keep the avatar, if they still have it, it means that I missed them. In Steph's case, I forgot to include it in my email to Jolt.

I requested that Jolt give her the title of "Ex-moderator" they didn't do so. I have since sent a second email requesting that (which is the same request that I did for all of the other ex-mods because currently none of them have that to the best of my knowledge). Yes, some of the ex-mods still have their moderator tag. Those accounts are also deactivated because the nations are dead, so it isn't nearly as much of a concern that they are marked as an ex mod. Steph is still active, so the title is more of a concern.

Finally, none of these actions taken are due to any political bias. I can say this because those actions that I did not perform personally I have reviewed.

As always, conspiracies may be fun, but the simpler answers are usually correct. I am very happy that Stephistan was on the moderation team and it was a pleasure working with her.

Did you know that since I've been here, I have only had four threads locked that I can remember? But I bet a lot of them were discussed. ;) I have one right now called, "The World According to Shit" which I'm willing to wager sits right about ON the line. :D

But on the other hand, I think the mods know what I am and what I'm doing here. I'm supposed to find the line. And straddle it.

I have a serious question.

why do the mods allow the bashing and trolling threads to go on but silence the fun ones (like word games) and call them spam?

I Mean all the parodys of the Walmart Cat slaughter is still viable and the ones that offend, like those that praise the Tsumani Deaths don't get locked as fast as the Word Games?
