Or me. If you've ever heard my voice, and seen me, you'd know I'd be a perfect Wonka...if you wanted a slightly demented Wonka, that is.

No, no, no. How about...Patrick Stewart? Bwahaha; trust me, when you put him in a comedy role, he is truly hilarious. Just watch Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius; he voices the Yolkian King.

Actually you know, in fairness, Depp has played a wide range of parts. He is a god damn good actor. I believe he can pull it off. The other actors mentioned here are so one dimensional. Think about the range that Depp has acted. I'm okay with Depp if they must make a remake!

Yes! Think of Depp as Edward Scissorhands...now think of him as Jack Sparrow....isn't Wonka somewhere in between?

Anyway, I'd still love to see Manson as Wonka...that would be freakin hilarious...

The director obviously would have got them if that was the approach they wanted to take. They chose Johnny Depp to give the movie some resonance and character, just wait and se.

Yes. Anyone who watched the movie as a child and actually enjoyed it kind of wants to re-live that..and really doesn't want to see it butchered.

well if manson were to play him it would really add something to the little cruise scene, that's for sure.

but if he weren't then i would be interested in seeing christopher walken in the role because he, like wonka, is both deeply creepy and bizarely attractive

i propose a horror version where wonka doesn't make candy and all the oompaloompas are played by ginger fish, twiggy ramirez, madonna wayne gacy, gidget gein and the rest of the spooky kids.

naturally, charlie would have to be played by rose mc gowan or christina ricci

I don't understand why some many ppl are against Depp being Willy Wonka. He's a very good comic actor, as 'Pirates of the Caribbean' shows.
Also, being a Roald Dahl story, adapted by Tim Burton, it's bound to be a bit dark and as such would not suit someone like Mike Myers, who over-acts in order to be funny, imo. You need someone capable of being subtle.
And I don't think Jim Carrey would be a good choice, cause the audience expectation would be for Carrey to do his trademark slapstick type acting that he always does in his comic roles.
Robin Williams might have been ok. It'd certainly have been nice to see him act in a film comedy aimed at an older market.
And Patrick Stewart would have been an inspired choice. He's quite a funny person off-screen, if you've ever seen any interviews with him.
I think someone who would have been superb is Eric Bana. If you'd ever seen him on 'Full Frontal' (an Aussie TV comedy show) or in 'Chopper', you'd know he's a damn fine comic actor.

Okay, I just read the whole thread, and these are my thoughts:

Johnny Knoxville is the guy who's getting paid to get high and then throw dog bones at other men's genetalia. For whoever asked who he was. They tape the whole thing, show it on MTV, and call it Jackass.

I think Depp would do a good job. I think he works well with Tim Burton, and I love Tim Burton (Nightmare before Christmas, first two Batman movies, Edward Scissorhands, Big Fish, and the re-make of Planet of the Apes). He is just so freaking creepy. His films are always great for two in the morning.

My closest movie theater is a $100 plane flight away in Nome, so I check out movie trailers at apple.com, quicktime, movie trailers. And I'm sorry if that's advertising. But it's got all the new ones, and it's not grainy.

I love the trailer for the new Charlie and the Chocolate Factoy. It's weird, creepy, and shows that they are not going to cut out some of my favorite parts of the book. Yeah!!

Other actors? Hmm. I never liked Gene Wilder in the first place, so almost anything is a big improvement. What about Dominic West who played the Italian teacher on Mona Lisa Smile and the boyfriend on 28 Days? OR Paul Bettany who played Chaucer on Knights Tale, the roomie on A Beautiful Mind, and some guy on Master and Commander? Hmm, turns out those two are both British. Odd.
