What do you think of Canada?

For most of my life, I didn't know what to think about our neighbor to the north, so I just didn't form an opinion; Canada was simply Canada, and that's it.
However, recent events have compelled me to learn more about Canada, and everything I read just makes me like Canada more and more. It's a wonderful country, and any Canadian I meet is good in my eyes, till they show they're not, of course, if they aren't. So what do you all think of Canada?

Well...mainly it's the political spectrum, the fact that it has much lower rates of all types of crime, the free health care for all...and so on and so forth. If it weren't for the fact that I'm going into politics to make the US more like Canada, I'd pack up and move to Canada.

Remarkably, no. Dogsledding is more a festival thing, done as a competition between people to see who can endure the winter the best and has the best dogs, sled and dog sleeding ability. And I only ever saw it in a small town. . . So. . . Not very common.

Hash baked into brownies. Knock you right out it will. . . Happened to someone I know. He was just lucky he got off the stairs before he fell down and hit the floor.

I love the "North of Barrie?" "South of North Bay?"
Who hails from Waterloo region?
Anyways. Don't get too mushy about "Free health care for all!", most Canadians would tell you it's broken. While there's differences of opinion on how to fix it (there's no debate, it gets shut down very quickly by one person shouting out "They're going to scrap it!" or "They're going to make us the next State!"), it's general knowledge now that we have a vast shortage of doctors (except in heavily urban areas, where business is good), long waiting lists for specialized care, and gradually services (like optimetry and dentistry) are losing their federal/provincial coverage.
Naturally, those are the only two areas that concern me.... I haven't seen my doctor in... six? Seven years? But I see my dentist every couple of months, had my wisdom teeth out six months ago and my damned eyes won't fix themselves :\
Canada's a great place to live. The odd thing is, now I haven't lived in the US at all but I've visited, just like I've visited Toronto and Ottawa.... it's not that different.
Unless you get hurt or something.

Being Canadian myself, I thank you for the compliment to my country. It is a wonderful place to live in my opinion, and I wouldn't want to be anywhere else. Canada's healthcare system doesn't work (waiting times are astronomical, 90% of new medications come from US), their military is in shambles, drug use is prevalent, the age of consent is 14 (So a 14 year old can have sex with an 80 year old, and it's not considered pedophilia), morality and religion are at an all time low, and their main hobby seems to be bashing the US, despite the fact that America basically fuels the Canadian economy and is Canada's only protection.

Im currently in California, Im a British Columbia native. I love Canada. Its been my home for 19 years. Even though, as a Canadian citizen, I love the country there are some down sides to living there.
First of all, my fiancee isn't there. Im visiting her for christmas and the new years currently. Secondly, the prices of everything down here in the US are cheap! I can buy 30 cans of beer for 16 dollars AT THE GROCERY STORE. As a man who enjoys alchohol I can say thats pretty awesome, and with 30 beers for 16 bucks, who cares if the percentage is lower? So what if religion is at an all-time low? Is that necessarily a bad thing? And what about morality? Who defines that? Let me guess; you see homosexuality as immoral, don't you? Please...
And the age of consent is the age of consent; that's determined by the law of the country, not you.
Sources for the healthcare problems, please.
Drug use is also prevelant in the US, only we call them beer and cigarettes.
If they want to bash the US, so what? We deserve it for electing a moron like Bush.

We all know the only people who complain about Canada are those of you who wish you lived here. It's okay, maybe one day your country will be as kewl as Canada. That's about the best advice I can give you. Keep the faith, it might happen for you too. My thoughts are with you.

I wonder where you are getting your information bucko. American citizens were coming upto Canada to get their flu medication, I'll note there was no waiting time. I had to get a series of blood tests done, when I was told to do that I got it all done within 30 minutes. Drug use, i.e. the use of Marijuana is not a problem in my opinion compared to alchohol abuse, which is responsible for more mayhem than a little pot >=\. The age of consent is 14 yes, but there is still a little thing called statitory rape. Morality and religion are just as prevalent in Canada than they are in the US, I myself am moral. America produces luxury items for Canada where as Canada, a major producer of raw materials provides the United States with the necessities they need to produce these items.
Canada is a major supplier of electricity to the United States as well. And though I may be an immoral, drug using, pedophile that is obviously not baptised. I can say at least that even though there are people like you out there I still love my friends and family in the US, except you.

The waiting times are worth not having to take a second job to set a broken leg.... Where are Americans getting their flu shots from???.... Yes our military sucks.... Drug use is also prevalent in the U.S.(at least I don't have to worry about getting shot while I buy my drugs)... Age of consent is NOT 14, if a 14 has sexual relations with an 80 year old, that is against the law... morality and religion are at an all time low in the US as well.... And for the record, in the war of 1812 We burned down HALF THE F*CKING WHITE HOUSE... Learn to check the facts first Yankee..........

Canada’s heath care system works in the sense that you won't have to die because you can't afford an operation. Seriously it may take a bit more time but you can get anything you need done here in Canada for free. Medication is more effective in Canada because the government prevents price gouging so people can actually afford medication.
The Canadian military is at just the right size considering we meet our NATO obligations; as well we are not at war at the moment.
"Drug use is prevalent" - So? People use Marijuana recreationally; smoking pot is a victimless crime, an issue between parents and children.
Yes the age of consent is 14, but any girl who would have intercourse with an adult at the age of 14 would do so against any law, because they are obviously not mature enough to make the distinction between what is normal and what is not normal.
Actually according to stats-Can only 1 in 30 Canadians don't belong to any religious affiliation, and why would you say morality is at an all time low, when crime is also at an all-time low.
American media has saturated Canadian television, and from what is portrayed on television compared to the lives we Canadians live, Americans don't look all that great, although I do realize that many Americans are very decent people.
As for Canadian protection......Canada isn't a very strategic move for anyone, if anything it’s in the Americans best interests to have a friend sharing their boarder. Canadian economy fuels Canadian economy, we export to the US far more than we import.

Well, I am a Saskatchewan borne prairie boy! Home of Candian Socialism, place where Health Care and the ATM machine come from. Now, I go to school in Alberta, Edmonton actually, whose motto should be, our hockey team used to be really good in the eighties....honest!
For all of the anti-Alberta sentiment, I really understand your position. The east controlls national policy, the federal agenda, and dsitribution of equalisation payments, that's enough to make anyone cranky! I mean, regional disparity is one of the biggest problems facing Canada today, from Quebec Seperatists to Truduae flipping the bird to a crowd of representatives that included relatives of mine. That is the government that we see.
As for Canada being immoral, joining the ultra-left wing liberal nations like Amsterdam in recognising same-sex marriage, and having a court literally re-write the Constitution in order to impose a highly unpopular set of morality on the majority is incredible! Could you imagine an American president doing that?! There would be revolution!
I will fight and die to protect my nation, and I will fight and die to protect the rights of homosexuals to be homosexuals, but I do think it it is immoral.
Will you fight and die to protect my right to beleive that this act is immoral? Or, like most NSers will I just start getting called a bigot or even a nazi?
I love my country, and I used to live fifteen minutes from USA, and I wouldn't wish that country on anyone. I think Bush is an idiot, I do not support the war in Iraq and though I thought Bowling for Columbine was great, Farenheit 911 was pretty sad. I knew Bush was an idiot already, but that kind of biased filmaking almost changed my mind. Canada's healthcare system doesn't work (waiting times are astronomical
As opposed to waiting times in the US which are astronomical AND expensive. Unless you have the cash and they they are somewhat fast and just cost the soul of a small child.
90% of new medications come from US
and? Why does it matter where the medication comes from, as long as someone gets it, but if you want to play that card, a shortage of flu shots have caused Americans to come to Canada for two years now.
their military is in shambles
Actually I think it's amusing how easy it is for people to over estimate a countries military. Bigger does not always equate to better. A smaller, and better trained army is whats key. But that's besides the point, I think Canada is a country of peace, not war, a fact I'm proud of.
drug use is prevalent
Compared to what, the United States? Please the so called war against drug doesn't stop anyone in the end. You know as well as I do that it boils down to personal choice.
the age of consent is 14 (So a 14 year old can have sex with an 80 year old, and it's not considered pedophilia)
Saw that one coming, you have to love these people who do no research and who make assumptions. In one province the age a girl can be legally married is 14. That still makes sex outside marriage pedophilia.
morality and religion are at an all time low
This was a good one, first you can't judge morality, there is no morality scale. Everyone has different views. What one person calls morale another might not so your claim is in fact an opinion. Also Religion is decreasing and being replaced by spirituality. Which I'm sure my just gnaw at you.
and their main hobby seems to be bashing the US
Only the administration, which if you read the paper or watch TV is not restricted just to Canada. Or any American who bashes first.
despite the fact that America basically fuels the Canadian economy You really might want to pull your head out of the sand. It works both ways. The amount of trade between our two countries is tremendous, if you think only Canada would suffer you are so sadly mistaken.
And for protection, if the time ever came that we needed protection from someone I'm sure we could find plenty from the international community.
The tiniest bit of research could of stopped you from making that post. But it didn't. Luckily I know enough not to judge a book by it's cover, and not your whole population feels this way. No matter what you say and no matter how you think we feel.
For the record I live in Vancouver, right downtown in Coal Harbour
Age of Consent: (Taken from the Library of Parliment)
The Criminal Code does not now criminalize consensual sexual activity with or between persons 14 or over, unless it takes place in a relationship of trust or dependency, in which case sexual activity with persons over 14 but under 18 can constitute an offence, notwithstanding their consent. Even consensual activity with those under 14 but over 12 may not be an offence if the accused is under 16 and less than two years older than the complainant.
What I remember from law class is that 14 year olds can have sex but not with someone over 18.
Our healthcare system may have problems but it is better than the alternative. And our health system actually costs less per capita than it does in the the US.
For the record I live in Toronto (have my whole life except for school in Kingston and Ottawa) but am a dual citizen.

Um.... you sure you're a Canadian? What "national policy" and "federal agenda" does "the east" control? Ottawa is not "the east." Who are the Truduae? Some liberal cult out east? And same-sex marriages are not authorized because of some alliegence to the Netherlands, but because the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms specifies no sex or gender discrimination.

Yep - it's all of those "cheap" American products that lead to.... trade deficits?
Or did you mean the "butting out" like legislating it so that health care providers can't band together to negotiate favourable bulk rates for their patients?
Please elaborate.

Um.... you sure you're a Canadian? What "national policy" and "federal agenda" does "the east" control? Ottawa is not "the east."
Depends on point of view. Anything east of Manitoba is considsered 'the east' when the speaker is from the prairies, but of course for anyone from ontario, 'down east' referes to the maritimes. Of course, everyone from the prairies knows that Ontario is the last real province once you start heading east, so Ontario is the east of Canada. (I may be overstating a little, but oh well. My Canada does not include Quebec. )
same-sex marriages are not authorized because of some alliegence to the Netherlands, but because the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms specifies no sex or gender discrimination.
And which, precisely, extends to gay marriage? It's hardly a matter of discrimination, unless you believe all of the activists (on either side) Unless you mean that the legal definition of anything must not specify male or female in its definition - although if that is the case, then why do abortion laws only grant rights to women?
Oh, and to the issue raised elsewhere about 14 being the age of consent... if you really have a problem waiting until a girl is 14, you can always move to one of the states where the age is 12 or 13. (I seem to recall Arkansas, West Virginia, and Maryland were some of the states, but it's been a long time since I looked it up....)
So, I guess my point is... all countries suck. Each for their own reasons, of course. So, is there really any point to the bashing? Nobody lives in a perfect country, after all.

Even consensual activity with those under 14 but over 12 may not be an offence if the accused is under 16 and less than two years older than the complainant.
I think I can clear this up, as I am a high school student who recently went over this in Social Studies and P.E.. The age of sexual consent in Canada is 14, and it IS legal for a 14 year old to have sex with an 80 year old. However, between the ages of 14 and 18, there is an important restriction in place, the line about "unless it takes place in a relationship of trust or dependency" refers to it. It basically states that you cannot have sex with a person over 14 but under 18, if you are in a position of power over them. Therefore, it is not legal to have sex with a 14 year old if you are their teacher, pastor, boss etc..
Also, statutory rape does not exist in Canada, as an offense under the criminal code.

I come from a family of immigrants, my mom and her family came here from Italy in 1962 and my dad's family came here from England, Scotland, and i think Ireland, in the 1800's and 1900's.
Most Canadians would say our health care system is broken? Please provide a source because I think that is totally inaccurate. Here BTW is some food for thought:
"Indeed, most Americans, or 54 percent, are now dissatisfied with the overall quality of health care in the United States — the first majority in three polls since 1993, and up 10 points since 2000."

We need guns to protect ourselves from the crime we don't have, which seems to be caused by guns in the first place, which we need to protect ourselves from other people with guns?
Our amount of gun crime seems too negligible to justify needing guns to protect ones family from other gun-toters, criminal or otherwise.
