How much do New Yorkers know about York?

It just seemed funny to me one day that, watching the news, people talk about the ties between New York and London, and I was thinking "Shouldnt New York have strong ties with York?" so I was just wondering if there are any New Yorkers out there who have been too or know much about York.

Why would New Amsterdam have close ties with York? :p

Bwahaha, I loved that. Indeed, New York was originally settled by the Dutch who named it New Amsterdam. It came into the possession of the English(probably through a war; I don't really remember at the moment) who renamed it New York.

It's a peppermint patty covered in a tasty chocolate. Everybody knows that.
Sheesh.

Why would they have strong ties with York?

This is a bad example, but Californians (the ones who are not Hispanic and were raised here) don't exactly know much about Mexico.

You mean Spain. Mexico only had a hold of California and the like for a couple decades before we took it from them, since they only gained independence from Spain in 1821.

and then of course...the Native Americans whose land was taken by the Spaniards.

Meh, what do I care? I'm a little bit Spainard!

Oh wait, I'm also equally Native American...

Well, yes, but you can take that way too far. I'm a lot of things. I'm part Cherokee, part French, part German, part Irish, part Scottish, part Japanese, and part Spanish. I'm quite the mutt, so to speak.

Part Spainard
Part Native American
Part Turkish
Part Greek
Part Indian
Part Burmese
Part Colombian
Part African

You have a more balanced variety. Mine just brings in the entire world and wraps it all up in one big, imperialist present.

Oh, and just to make this absolutely clear to everyone. Upstate New York is a myth. It doesn't exist. It's just as fictional as Canada is. You know how those fairy tales go.

Go Dutch! Long live New Amsterdam!

Lets see. Mainland New York, inhabited by Iroquois, NYC/Long Island area, called "Fish Island" by natives...then Henry Hudson claims a ton of stuff for Holland along the river named after him, and also includes the southern part of Manhattan Island. More specifically the Dutch settled the southern part of Manhattan and built a wall to block off the northern part. This wall is now Wall Street. Anyway, later the English come and kick the Dutch out, and the King of England gives the New York colony to his brother, the Duke of York.

Thats all I know about York, and that upstate a little there is a "Yorktown."

Let me be the first to make mention of the slaughter of the Jews in York in 1190: it is part of the NationStates terms and conditions that this must be mentioned everytime that York appears in the General Forum.*
