Just out of curiosity, is there a story behind anyone's nation names? Personally, I was lacking inspiration and was eating a chicken pie when I created my nation.
Pure Metal
31-12-2004, 13:33
was listening to an Iced Earth song called Pure Evil. Sounded like a shit name so i put 'Metal' instead.
lame story really...
FairyTInkArisen
31-12-2004, 13:33
i had to dress up as a fairy last christmas for my job so because my name is Elly, i started getting called Fairy Tinkerbelly,so then i set up my nation at New Year and thought it would be a good name, then i got deated so i called myself FairyTinkArisen because people here call me Tink, and i.....arose
Ailati
31-12-2004, 13:37
Italia backwards. Also our tongue is just english, just put backwards and i use a few other tricks to make it unique, but that's most of what i use as the Onailati language.

In the game our tribe originates in the pacific, but after war and unsuccessful independence, most of the onailati people traveled to the stronghold where independence was unsuccessful and war occured, and many onailati perished there, but in this current region we have land and soverignty, so all is well under president n'hoj h'tims (tap).
JuNii
31-12-2004, 13:38
used to have a nation called Ichi Ni (1 2 in japanese) when that got deleted... I stuck 'em together and became JuNii (12 in Japanese)
Cannot think of a name
31-12-2004, 13:38
I was following links and wasn't sure what this was or if I'd keep doing it. So after a while I hadn't come up with anything so I thought I'd just admit it.
The Unlimited One
31-12-2004, 13:41
I was having a moment of seriously inflated ego when i set up my yahoo account, and Unlimited has not left my vocabulary since. I feel more powerful when describing myself this way.

I AM THE UNLIMITED ONE!!!!!!!!!
Petsburg
31-12-2004, 13:44
I had a really old pug and my mum always called him "Pet", so I thought of the name "Pets" but I thought it sounded stupid so I put "Berg" after it because I has just finished defrosting the freezer and it reminded me of an iceberg.
Freedomfrize
31-12-2004, 13:45
I just found the "freedom fries" hysterical reaction hilariously childish, and just thinking about it makes me smile... But "Freedomfries" was already taken - possibly by me already, lol... (freedom kissing, anyone?)
Wagwanimus
31-12-2004, 13:45
because i love to say wha gwaan to ppl -it becomes shortened to wagwan (some people even spell it this way) wagwan got banned but i am back and being nicer. wagwanimus
Aratlibia
31-12-2004, 13:51
Mine originates a bunch of years back to when I was attending to a youth-director course. We played a game called World Trade there, in which the players were divided into five groups that represented five countries. Two of them were rich, developed countries with lots of money and technology (tools, such as scissors) but short on resources (paper). Two were poor developing countries with lots of resources but not really anything else. And one was a developing country with a rare resource (in this case, a paper of different colour). We were to name the countries. I was in the rare-resource one with a group of friends, and we decided to be "A Christian Arab Nation", and after a while of pondering we ended up with the name "Aratlibia"

Oh, and about the game... well, we borrowed some tools to turn our resources into some pretty invaluable but easy to make trade goods (paper pieces of specified shapes and sizes) and brought the two rich countries on their knees by making them fight over the rare resource we really didn't have any use for ourselves. In the end we were so rich with goods and so resource-rich (we had naturally bought much of the resources from other developing countries) that we actually stopped making any goods and instead decided to fold our remaining resources into paper gliders and attack the other countries :D

Yup, those were the days, being young'n all :P

Zeppistan
31-12-2004, 14:03
Zeppo Marx has been my online alter-ego for over 20 years now, chosen for a variety of reasons that continue to make sense - albeit for different reasons than at the beginning. I first used it on a local BBS in '83.

So Zeppistan seemed a logical extension.
Burcemias Cousin
31-12-2004, 14:05
I took my old name, Burcemia from FF IX, and added a bit on for fun ^_^
Simple as really, hehe.
Eutrusca
31-12-2004, 14:07
I chose "Eutrusca" because I have always admired the somewhat mysterious Eutruscan culture ( sometimes spelled Etrusca ). For more information on Eutrusca see ...

Tried to think of something unifying and generally encompassing and my first few choices were already taken.
Shaed
31-12-2004, 14:11
Shaed is the third plane up from earth in a fantasy novel I wrote. It's the lowest plane whose inhabitants can remember their previous lives. The novel took place on Shaed, and I started using sharnofshade as a handle (Sharn being the main character of the novel, and 'Shade' being a misspelling of Shaed). When I joined here, 'sharnofshade' didn't seem like a name for a nation (it being a character name and all), so I used Shaed instead (spelt correctly partly because I assume Shade would be taken).

I always wondered why people sometimes called you Etrusca. I thought everyone just kept on making the same spelling mistake.
Pedie
31-12-2004, 14:20
We have a chihuahua/pug mix dog named Pedie. He has one eye (lost the other one in a fight with our dog Cowboy), is so fat that he walks like a sumo wrestler, looks like a tiny rottweiler, and will be cuddling with you one minute and biting the fire out of you the next. He talks all the time in the form of different tones and pitches of growls and snorts. Nastiest little dog I ever met! He's my role model.

My wife Zooke's name is short for zookeeper. That's why we have a little a--hole like Pedie. :(

East Canuck
31-12-2004, 14:28
I used my geographical situation, being in eastern Canada, to choose my name. Now I wish I would have taken 15 minutes and think of a cool sounding name for the forum instead.

Maybe if I get deleted.
Nevigrad
31-12-2004, 14:35
I got mine from RUSSIA :D After playing Half-life and killing so many police guys :gundge: I built a liking for them :fluffle: so my nation is based on City 17,run by a Guy who relies on his brutal police to get thr job done

Nothing wrong with East Canuck. If you go out of your way to get a cool name, you won't stand out from all the other people going out of their way to have a cool name. All names seem a bit crap at first, anyway.
Pythagosaurus
31-12-2004, 14:42
Sorry about the length, but it's a long story. It's a good one, though, so read on.

Two summers ago, I did math research (Combinatorics) at California Polytechnic State University (CalPoly) at San Luis Obispo. The mountains surrounding the town all have letters constructed on them. The one that is on the campus property has a large, white, concrete 'P', which stands for "Poly". It's a custom at the school to decorate the 'P' in various impermanent ways in order to advertise whatever it is that you want to advertise.

When I arrived, the director of the program bragged to us about how the math club had recently decorated the 'P' by using bedsheets to transform it into the square root of P squared, "which doesn't really change it at all," he claimed. He, of course, neglected to mention that this assumes P was on the primary branch of the square root function. At any rate, my friend and I decided to poke fun at the comment by putting the square root of a dinosaur squared in the skylight of the math department.

Here (http://www.geetduggal.com/tiefer/dinosaur.jpg)'s a picture. Sorry, it's big. I haven't scaled it any from my 4 Mpixel digital camera.

In order to address the fact that the expression's form resembles that of the Pythagorean distance formula, I named the dinosaur the Pythagosaurus, receiving inspiration from a book that contained laughably bad essays that were actually submitted by students to their teachers.
Meaning
31-12-2004, 14:48
I think life as we live it sucks and there is more to it a deeper......Meaning so i got my name from the way i see life or what we should be looking for with our life. i know pretty lame
Leviathen
31-12-2004, 14:49
When I named my nation, I was going for Leviathan but it was already taken. So I went with Leviathen because it had the same sound to it. The link below has some information on Leviathan, if anyone is interested.

Leviathan, from Wikipedia. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leviathan)

So that is the story behind my nations name.
Catholic Europe
31-12-2004, 14:52
I am Catholic, hence the Catholic part and I come from Europe (hence the Europe part). That's how I got my nations name.
Polssia
31-12-2004, 14:53
My name is combiantion of Poland and Russia. Two greatest Slavic nations living together in one country - that's the way I imagine Polssia should be.

PIcaRDMPCia
31-12-2004, 14:57
Not really much of one; it was my first nation, so I just took the name I use around every other forum I visit and added ia to it. You'll find me everywhere else as PIcaRDMPC, which is basically Picard with my initials. It's capitalized that way for several odd reasons, most of which I do not even recall anymore. So I just left it that way.
St Baggies
31-12-2004, 15:00
Baggies is the nickname of my favourite football team who play (allegedly) in England's Premiership. That would be soccer to you lot over the Atlantic. Beatification was just a small gesture from a humble fan.

Lerdodia
31-12-2004, 15:07
my husband and i call eatchother lerdo all the time, which goes back to the Ewoks cartoon. Wicket used to say it all the time and from what i gather, it's quite similar to calling someone a doofus or a butthead but in the most positive, caring way possible ;)

Heh, I'm not good with compliments. Even if someone compliments my hair or something I get really tongue tied and end up saying something along the lines of "yeah, er, I think it's good too".
Eutrusca
31-12-2004, 15:20
I always wondered why people sometimes called you Etrusca. I thought everyone just kept on making the same spelling mistake.
Heh! That's to be expected. Actually, Etrusca is the more common spelling, I just liked the "Eutrusca" spelling better. The culture was noted for being way ahead of its time in the degree of equality afforded to both men and women, which is one reason I've always been fascinated with it.

Heh, I'm not good with compliments. Even if someone compliments my hair or something I get really tongue tied and end up saying something along the lines of "yeah, er, I think it's good too".

I'm worse... I tend to try to neutralise compliments... like, if someone compliments my hair, I'll be all "nahhhh, it's floofy and crazy and bleah".

To which people tend to respond to with either murderous rage or 'heh, 'floofy''
Ogiek
31-12-2004, 15:35
There is actually a small indigenous tribe of bee keepers called the Ogiek living mainly in Kenya's Mau and Mt. Elgon Forests who are fighting to maintain their identity in an increasingly homogenized world. My tag line, "Kihooko kiunaga uta mugeete" is Ogiek for "The Truth is Stronger than Weapons."

If you are interested in the Ogiek they have a website detailing their struggles with the government of Kenya:

Yeah, but with me they just tend to respond with a bit of a fixed smile...

By the way, that was fascinating, Ogiek.

Mine's pretty boring really...my first name is Karen, annoyingly shortened to Kaz quite a lot, and I thought this game was a bit of an amusing escapade - a 'caper', if you will. So, Kazcaper was born :)
Monkeypimp
31-12-2004, 16:24
Hang on, I've got the story behind my shithouse nam written down somewhere.. *finds notepad file*

------------
Back in the day, (a few years ago actually) me and my best mate were N64 wh0res and one of the games we played was wcw/nwo revenge, a pro-wrestling game. One day I decided to re-name on of the made up characters. Being a southpark fan then too, I named him 'FiveassedmonkeymanVII' with the 'manVII' being added on in a spur of the moment thing. About a month later, I was discussing with this said friend what I should use for my yahoo msger ID (I just started using that again even though no one I know is ever on) and he suggested I use the fiveassed name, so I did, 'Fiveassedmonkeyman7' became my Yahoo ID. A few months later, I started playing the online game 'Planetarion' (sometime during Round 3 for people who know when that was) and stuck with the name for my planets ruler name. Using IRC became an important part of playing this game, and I was forced to shorten my name to 'Monkeyman7' for IRC. Sometime during the round, my birthday happened and some of my friends gave me an orange 'pimp' tshirt which I wore constantly (note: in the dictionary at the end of my last year at school I got 'Always seen: with his bitchaz, Most likely to be: A P.I.M.P. this stemed from this tshirt) When round 4 of Planetarion started, I adjusted my ruler name slightly on the back of this tshirt to 'Fiveassedmonkeypimp7' or 'Monkeypimp' for IRC. This was my online name for a while, and when I joined the nationstates game, failing to think of anything better I stuck with it.
Sanctaphrax
31-12-2004, 16:27
Sanctaphrax is the name of a city in a series of books called the Edge Chronicles, written by Paul Stewart and Chris Riddell. They're brilliant books, so I took the name.
Los Banditos
31-12-2004, 16:29
Two Halloweens in a row I had a crappy Zorro costume that was called "El Bandito." I bought it at Wal-mart. Whenever something happened in the dorms like someone losing a pen or me stealing a beer from someone's refrigerator, I would say something like "El Bandito strikes again."

I did not have a nickname in college yet, because my nickname from high school and grade school was not known. So, El Bandito became my new nick. When I joined NS I made it plural. And that is the story of the bandit.
Legless Pirates
31-12-2004, 16:32
I was in a very Piraty mood when I created this nation. But I didn't want to be an ordinary pirate, so I came up with the Legless part.
Tekania
31-12-2004, 16:38
Mine is abit mundane.

I have a small business, network contracting corp, TEKNetworks, I also go by TEKComputers as an online name generaly. TEK is a play off "Tech" of course.

So taking that TEK, adding a nice nationlike suffix to it "-ania"... You get Tekania
DHomme
31-12-2004, 16:39
It's french for "D man" which some people call me. I thought DMan was a shit name so I put it in french.

How very interesting.
Adler X
31-12-2004, 16:39
Adler is German for Eagle. My normal SN is GoldEagle. X is 10 and sounds cool. I speak some German. Amazing, eh?
Ice Hockey Players
31-12-2004, 16:54
I don't play hockey, but I am a huge fan, so I originally wanted Hockey Players, but for some reason it was taken. I chose Ice Hockey Players as the next best thing.

My original nation was Falcon Island, the Falcon part being taken from a nickname I got at a conference for Model UN. I was representing the Maldives and I wore a beige hat, so someone nicknamed me the "Maldives Falcon," with the play on words obvious. This was the same conference where I was partnered with a guy known as Jesus. He actually got up when we were introducing ourselves and said, "Hi, I'm Jesus. Any questions?"

I don't do the whole puppet nation thing usually, though I did win Teh 4dm1nz0r in a contest (so I don't know where exactly the name was chosen or anything) but it's mainly my experimenting nation, the one I answer with the goofy responses to issues with.

I like "Spawn" both the movie and comic, so this is kind of a tribute. The spelling comes from an Anne Bishop book.
Anandria
31-12-2004, 17:11
my husband's middle name is Anand....i had tried for Anandia but it was taken.....n now that i have had this name for my nation for a lil bit now, i kinda like the way Anandria sounds....even made up a whole story for it...hehehehe

The Kingdom of Anandria was founded by King Vijay Siddiah's great great great grandparents during great strife and terrible economical times. The Good King Anand and his wife, the Good Queen Dria named this land after themselves ONLY after they proved to their people that they could and would bring them back from the pits of the dark ages. Throughout the ages, the direct decendants of King Anand and Queen Dria have kept the nation together and out of harm's way. King Lingowda, my husband's father, left this world and left the crown to my husband in 2001. Earlier this year, I was married to King Vijay and crowned Queen Wyntarra Siddiah. Since that time, our kingdom has seen much improvement by way of racial equality, women and sexual rights, religious and political freedoms. We care very deeply for our people and wish them all the best happiness. They are our "children" and we will look after them as parents might.

I happened to be making toast and broke a toaster (made sparks, gave off foul smelling smoke, burnt me toast) and so as an act of respect I thought i would make a communist nation inhabited by toasters :D
Dogburg
31-12-2004, 17:21
Dogburg is a bastardization of "Duckburg", the fictional home of Scrooge McDuck in the Donald Duck cartoons.

The dog is somewhat of a mascot for me, so I thought this was a fitting monicker for my nation.
Andaluciae
31-12-2004, 17:23
You're going to laugh.

My first name is Andrew.

So, I was in marching band all of my high-school years, and during one of those years we played a selection of songs from Riverdance. One of the songs was entitled Andalucia.

Andaluciae quickly became an imaginary joke nation amongst my friends and I, and various random things happened there. We even made a movie of me attempting to launch a model rocket for the Andalucian space program, failing miserably, and the resulting cover-up.

I leaned of nation states from my precious US News and decided to make Andalucia come into existence, but after typing in Andalucia and being told the name existed, I pondered what letter change would be best, in the end I just added the letter 'e' to the end, as it seemed most harmless.

And that's how Andaluciae came about.
Chinkopodia
31-12-2004, 17:25
I intended Chinkopodia to be an economically centred capitalist nation, and so it was named Chinkopodia, after the noise that money makes when it collides with more money. :)

L-rouge
31-12-2004, 18:16
Not an exciting story, but its based on a nickname I used to have at school just shortened (used to be Lester rouge, or red Lester). My last name's Lester, which is what most people called me, and someone thought it was funny to take the mick by making it sound like the cheese. So to piss 'em off, I made it my own!

Sarzonia
31-12-2004, 18:59
When I was starting my NS country, I tried to think of a name I wanted to be realistic, so to speak. After racking my brain, I finally just decided to name it with my last name and add "nia" onto the last name to make it sound like a country's name. It's when I started doing other things that the naming got more interesting (naming my capital Woodstock and my largest city Nicksia after my favorite singer Stevie Nicks).

31-12-2004, 19:32
I like Ravens.
I hate the letters 'NS' (Coincidence? Gasp! ...Okay, I dont really hate the letters 'NS.')
I like the letter A.
'Rave' Was already taken (Rave Shentavo, Obviously.)
So:Rave+A=Ravea!

Frisbee Freaks
31-12-2004, 20:00
I named my country after my dog. The dog's name is June, so the leader of my nation is Juun and the national animal, with no difference in pronounciation, just thought two u's was more original. She Freaks out over Balls and Frisbees, and really loves them so that's where I got the name Frisbee Freaks and tennisballs for currency. She also growles a lot at people, so the national motto is Grrrrrrrrrrrrr.....
Stil
31-12-2004, 20:12
Well, I'm from the US studying in Germany currently and university here is much, much easier and with all my extra time I've taken up activities such as Nation States. I'm known for being able to take wacky items of clothing and make them look classy, being lame and self-centered I thought, hmm, the republic of style, and then to make it more intersting translated it into German, hence stil was born.

Alomogordo
31-12-2004, 20:48
Alomogordo, New Mexico (also spelled Alamogordo), was the site of the very first nuclear bomb test. A bomb called 'Trinity' was dropped from a 100 foot steel tower. After it was dropped, the tower completely disentegrated and all of the sand 800 feet out had turned to glass because of the extreme heat.

I'm Catholic (my family comes from Ireland) and most of my friends are not. So they joke about me joining the IRA but that and Real IRA was taken so i chose Irish National Liberation Front, but that didn't fit so i made it shorter.

Tiggergoddess
31-12-2004, 21:00
When I first became active with e-mail and internet and such, I wanted something that summed me up succintly and accurately. I love Tigger, always have, and always will. He and I have similar bouncy, energetic, positive personalities. I am also a Leo, and all Lions and Lionesses are supreme beings, so that's where the Goddess bit came in. So, that's how the Tiggergoddess was born.

My evil nation, Grimmish, came about because I was looking around my computer room for evil name inspiration, and saw Grimm's Complete Fairy Tales on my bookshelf. However, Grimm was already taken, so I said dammit, and out of the blue, Grimmish was established.

Note to Pedie: We have an evil little cat too, half loving, half insane bitch. Her name is Mousette. She is also my idol. :)

Yelda
31-12-2004, 21:19
Yelda was the name of an RP nation I had back in the 70's(yes thats right, the 70's. Back when it was done with pencil and paper and hand-drawn maps!) The name was taken from a fictional city in the Richard Adams novel "Shardik". You might remember Richard Adams as the author of Watership Down.
New Jeffhodia
31-12-2004, 21:25
Well, about a year ago I started a nation named Jeffhodia. Sadly, it was lost to lack of interest.

As to where the original name came from, no man is an island but if I was a country it would be awesome.

Lol Yelda, I remember those days well, and actually I still game PNP/ Tabletop - have two games set up for this weekend ( double the fun! ) and like you my nations name is taken from my master campaign - started it in the mid 70's and it's still going strong!

Fahrsburg
31-12-2004, 22:21
My paternal grandmother comes from Russia by way of Germans who moved there to work for Peter the Great. They kept their family name without Russofying it all that time :) When the so called communists took over, her folks got out and moved to the US (eventually) after short stays in many European countries.

As my great grandpa used to tell me before he passed on, "Everyone who left Russia claimed to be either a general or at least a count, but those days are gone. Now, I'm just a farmer, and I'm much happier for it." That side of the family is all gone now, and I've never been able to find out the true history of their life in Russia.

Being the imaginative child I was, I figured great-grandpa Fahrsburg had to be at least a Duke, and the Grand Duchy of Fahrsburg was born. I've used it for D&D games since the 70s and other things as well.

Peechland
01-01-2005, 00:51
Well I though if I made a Nation, it should be something that ended in -land, and since I live in the state of Georgia, and Georgia is known as the Peach state, I'd name it Peachland. Well it wouldnt accept PeAchland -although I havent seen a nation with that name. So I spelled it Peechland. Also, in the beginning I chose to be "The Protectorate of Peechland" because I think alliteration is cool.
Das Rocket
01-01-2005, 01:22
I was cruising the streets of Toronto on my racing bike, when I saw and ad for a Mercedes-Benz C Coupe Kompressor that said "Das Rocket" on it. It looked awesome, so I used it as my nation name. It was more the slogan than the car, because I find old American cars to be the coolest.

Zahumlje
01-01-2005, 04:24
My Nation's name is from Land of Hum, the ancient name of Hercegovina, the home of most of my Balkans ancestors, I could have gone with Humska as easily but Zahumlje kind of had a nice ring to it, I could as well have called it 'Zahumska'or Humska Zemelja' but Zahumlje sounded better than that too.
Another nation in my region is Humska, every one in The Balkans has to have a nation which is geographically based, and could be in R.L.Balkans. People in our sister region Balkans get a little more frivolous, one nation is named for the Crvena Zvezda football club in Belgrade, another is named for Istria but has a cow on the flag instead of the original regional mascot a goat, there are three nations based on Bulgaria, one based on Macedonia, three Byzantine Empire based nations. Three nations are Croat themed nations, one Serbian themed Nation, and one nation based solely on the lovely city of Mostar. The majority of the region have some R.L. connection with the R.L. Balkans, they may have worked there, have Balkans ancestry, visited long term there or have been born there. The age range is anywhere from 15 years to 52 years. There are experienced R.P. types and just frustrated world leaders.

Interestingly enough there are a lot of Volga Deutsch farmers in my real life area, they have a 'Germans From Russia Society'.
I don't qualify as Volga Deutsch myself, my Russian relatives descended from Rurik the Viking and really were nobility. So here I am liveing in the American Siberia, my R.L. Russian relatives tried so hard to avoid the Russian Siberia. My R.L. area was indeed for a time administered from Siberia.
Slap Happy Lunatics
01-01-2005, 04:41
I'm worse... I tend to try to neutralise compliments... like, if someone compliments my hair, I'll be all "nahhhh, it's floofy and crazy and bleah".

To which people tend to respond to with either murderous rage or 'heh, 'floofy''
I used to have that problem. Now when they compliment my hair I just say, "thank you" and pet their seeing eye dog.

OK. My nation's name. I have lived and worked in Lower Manhattan, about 3 short city blocks from the WTC, for almost 17 years. In the weeks and months following 9-11 most of the people here were medicated one way or another. As you might imagine, at times it made for some odd behaviors and events.

Since my co-workers and I work in an environment that deals directly with the residents we were privy to, and often the recipents of, this onslaught of stressed out human behaviors. Humor, being the salve and lubricant of interpersonal relations, the phrase Slap Happy expressed the lesser affected individuals. The more extreme folks soon had the designation Lunatic added on.

I know it may sound harsh out there in the "real world" but please be assurred that we were all in the same boat save the fact my co-workers and myself were not evacuated to hotels but instead did recovery work. It never referred to anyone who actually lost anyone.

Upper Xen was started mainly because: a) I am a Half-Life Fan, b), I tried entering Just Xen, but that wasn't cool (somebody else had it), so I had to settle for Upper Xen instead.

I think it has done pretty well for itself. I even created a reason why in-character Upper Xen is called such.

Funfact of the day: I wanted to call myself the Maritime Territories once....that wouldn't have gone down too well.

Corsairs, bucaneers, pirates were all taken so Cuthroat worked. Cutroatia was better

I'm a fan of anime (pronounced ah-ni-meh) so like, yeah. Although "otaku" is a negative term really.

In a RP sense, my nation is full of people who like Anime and stuff, and we've had "expansion projects", including territorial conquests and space expansions. In my mind, my Nation is fighting against some Big-Evil-Baddies-From-Outer-Space thingamajig. :D

Jovian Dyson Spheres
01-01-2005, 06:33
I chose The Commonwealth of Jovian Dyson Spheres because I had an idea in my head at the time about megacorporations in space. And that sort of thing.

Among other things done in the name of progress, Earth's supranational megacorps chartered legal rights to various space territories and an aerospace corporation built giant minimoons of commercial zones, citizen habitats, vast hydroponic gardens, gas processing and robotic space factories, all in orbit around Jupiter, which the idea was, would be 'mined' by drone ships with large ramscoop field emitters.

This went well for a number of years and profits were made. Then a large scale Earth conflict affected spacebased infrastructure spending, it meant costly interplanetary travel basically shut down for a decade and the space facilities out there had to make it on their own or die.

The installations around Jupiter all banded together and barely survived and now trade deuterium 'mined' from the upper atmosphere as the primo reaction mass or fuel for almost all thruster types in use.

The political ethos was born of pragmatism and expediency. The core tenet is 'work makes profit' and the belief in commerce is almost a religion. The spheres are selfgoverned by the council of company heads which now collectively owns the charter rights. Each person owns a share in the company and is considered a voter. Everyone is a multi millionaire by Earth standards, however, expensive personal luxury quotas are strictly ENFORCED, and the commonwealth owns EVERYTHING else. Its a corporate police state like paradise under martial law. :P

Short version: Its a pretty standard E-Communist dystopia. 'Cept in space.

Ghargonia
01-01-2005, 07:46
Mine's based on something I created before ever hearing of 'NationStates'. The story of the Ghargonians has existed on my hard drive for the better part of three years now. Not entirely sure why. It's a lot more eloquent than the watered-down version I've built up on here, what with it being a full-blown story rather than trying to figure out how to convert it to RP. Though NS has helped me add to it somewhat.

The ultimate quest has gone for a sure number and profits have been well form to you. Then, spacebased influenced large-scale amasses a conflict expenses in infasctructure, has meant that the margin of expensive maneuver interplanetary, in a generalized manner of generates them for a decade and the field service it has been closed outside on theirs same himself here, to form or to die had. Vas Pokhoronim

'Vas pokhoronim,' or "мы вас похороним" is Russian for 'we will bury you.' It's what Khrushchev was shouting when he was banging his shoe on the podium at the UN.

House Tremere
01-01-2005, 09:21
Well... I've got a list of countries. Sadly enough, they're all serious. But hey, I'll go through them.

House Tremere - Plagarism, pure and simple. ;-) Taken from my favorite Vampire: The Masquerade Clan.

Pentex Incorperated - Intentionally spelled wrong after I saw a typo in one of White Wolf's books. Right up there with Laws of Hunt (I know some of you out there will get it ;-).

Saint Theodosius - The country would like to think that they're as pure of heart as Saint Theodosius. They aren't.

Free Noetic Thought - Based on various concepts, I got the idea for the "Noetic" bit from the Corpus Hermeticum.

Technocratic Unity - Again, role-playing based. Mine's... kind of alternative, though.

The Royal Art - Refers to the art of Alchemy.

Stripe-lovers
01-01-2005, 09:40
Well, y'see I was looking for a stupid flag to put up for my nation, and found Uganda's stripe-filled monstrosity. Then I needed a name. All the cool, witty, and original names I could think of were taken (both of them) so I got to a thinking. There's a lot of stripes on the flag. The people must like stripes. Hell, they must love stripes. So let's call them... Stripe-Lovers!!!!!!

There's no way to change the nation's name, right?

Oh, and I later rejigged the flag by using the US, UK and Macedonian flags in nauseating colours to really lend it the wholesome stripey goodness:

Dostanuot Loj
01-01-2005, 11:43

So, Dostanuot Loj (Pronounced: Dos-tan-you-ought La-ie) loosely translated means "The Main Battle Tank I Will Have".

So, how's that for a weird name?

Kaneshima
01-01-2005, 20:58
My nation is "gold island" in Japanese. I named it Kaneshima after the setting of a novel I am writing, and because gold money (real money, not the paper fiat crap that most governments, even the half capitalist/socialist United States, push on their people) is a symbol of trade and trust between people, and not the root of all evil, as the cliche would have us believe.

Findhorn
04-01-2005, 02:53
"Findhorn" is the name of an actual place in Scotland, where people talk to the Devas of their crops and produce unbelievably healthy veges (the point of it all isn't veges, however; it's spiritual growth and unity and ... Google them to find out more). On good days I wish I could muster that sort of belief, on bad days I think they're pleasantly dotty. Either way, I think it's a fine thing to have lots of pleasantly dotty people around, and I wanted a pleasantly dotty nation, so I pinched the name.
Marabal
04-01-2005, 03:08
I found this website one moring and thought it looked pretty cool. I wanted my nation to sound like a really contry, so I made up the name by combining and mixing up words around me.

I told some of my friends about this when I got to school and September and they said I was and Idiot, and this site was gay.

I told my one friend in Augest though, and he joined a day after, Present Day Comatica. He already created his country way before he knew about this, cause he was planning to write a book about a made up country.

The Emperor Fenix
04-01-2005, 03:18
I took a character from one of my old stories (The Emperor Fenix) and gave him a nation. Simple. However this is not a very practical name for a nation so i often use a couple of others to describe it, youll get the idea quite quickly.

The Okyton Empire: comprises of Okyto City
The Crassussian Empire: Run by and comprising almost solely of Crassuss
The Shirassian Empire: Run by Lord Shirassi

See its easy enough once you gert the hang of it :D. In short ive just taken characters from my on going nation tale (started before i knew of this site) and given them nations.

As for Okyto this is slightly more complex, as many of you will be aware Tokyo was named as an anagram of Kyoto (or at least i think so) and given this i named my city the last truly viable anagram of Kyto (the others sound terrible)

Okyto.
Fallen Saints
04-01-2005, 03:23
My country name comes from my sense of dualism. Good and evil being opposites. "Fallen" reffering to a fall from grace, and saints being holy people. There are also people in history that did great things, but were condemned by the church, thus Saints that would never be. Most of this crap I though up afterwards...I just thought is sounded cool. The original name was going to be Dark Saints, but that was taken

The Cult of Pi
04-01-2005, 04:47
Mine was spawned from the movie aptly named "Pi" I found the idea of a cult that worships math an entertaining idea.

Humbly from the peoples of 3.1415926535897932384626433832795028841 (isn't that the biggest Pi youv'e ever seen?)
Gran Cienaga
04-01-2005, 04:48
I used to have a nation called Cienaga, but then it got deleted after inactivity, so when I found out I created a new one. Since I didn't want to put any dashes in the name, I decided to add the prefix "Gran" to it, Spanish for great. Around this time I also found out that "cienaga" is the Spanish word for swamp, so now my nation is literally the Great Swamp. At least the Spanish name sounds better, though :)

I originally came up with the name Cienaga after flipping channels and coming across a Spanish movie called Cienaga. I thought it was a nice sounding name so I chose it, too bad I hadn't looked up what it mean't beforehand
Boonytopia

Lunar Destiny
04-01-2005, 06:57
Humanity cannot endure upon this lone celestial ball for all eternity. Eventually, it is our destiny to expand beyond the skies and into the vastness of space.
Moreover, when one considers the projected population crunch to befall earth in the coming century or two, it seems most prudent to find for mankind new homes. The two most logical sites would be the oceanic continental shelves and the moon.

04-01-2005, 18:58
Just out of curiosity, is there a story behind anyone's nation names? Personally, I was lacking inspiration and was eating a chicken pie when I created my nation.

I once wrote a really poor quality rant (http://www.shadoweyes.org/issues/issuex/rt0019.html) about not wanting to be considered human anymore because the rest of you assholes just suck way too damn bad. I decided that I should form my own species so that when the revolution or the alien mothership or god or whatever finally comes I could have a little slip of paper and a name tag that said I am not with the rest of these jerkoffs. I called the new species Pithicus Calvus (Bald Ape) and ran with it.

The name has stuck.
Dalradia
04-01-2005, 20:18
Dalradia (also spelt Dal-ratia) was an ancient Kingdom from Celtic history. First records were taken by the Romans of a Goidelic speaking people known as "Scotti", who inhabited the Island Kingdom of Hebernia.

Records have it that King Erc of Dalradia in Northern Ireland sent his sons to colonise mainland Britain, and they landed in modern Argyll to found the colony of New Dalradia. The capital of the colony was Dunadd.

The kingdom was Christianised by Saint Patrick. In 575AD Saint Columba called the Synod of Drumsceatt which recognised Dalradian independence from Ireland, under the Kingship of Adian. Dalradia then included Argyll and Hibernia, and was known only as Dalradia (without the "New") as the origional Kingdom had been subsumed into the Kingdom of Ireland.

Aidan was an able ruler who secured treaties with the Britons and Picts, founding an alliance agains the invading Angles.

The Kingdom began to weaken from 603AD, when it was defeated by the Angles. Numerous battles were fought between the Scots, Britons, Angles Picts and Norse. Eventually the Angles went into decline from 670AD onwards. The five Kingdoms between them controlled all of Northern Britain, from the English counties of Chester and Yorkshire northwards.

In 841 Kenneth, son of Alpin, became King of Dalradia, and three years later inherited the throne of Pictland. This was the first King to be described as the "King of all Scotia". Monastic documents referred to this kingdom as Alba, Albainn, Albania or Albany.

From then on, the Kingdom of Dalradia ceased to exist as an independent nation, and the King was styled the "King of Picts and Scots", and so ends the history of Dalradia.

By the way, you can usually find a pretty good name if you're a bit creative. If you go for stuff like "ninjadude" or "terminator", you'll find that they're taken, because somebody always takes crap like that.

Ardchoille is the war-cry of the clan McGregor. It (allegedly) means something like "For the High Pine!", or possibly "For the Old Pine!" (though I haven't seen anything suggesting it means "For the High Old Pine!"). Must have been waa-a-aayy inspiring when you were getting set to hurl yourself onto the much greater weaponry of the English (or the Campbells, or anyone else who didn't have much going on at the time). Anyway, since there's not much call for it these days, I decided to give it something to do.

10-01-2005, 09:02
For some reason, as I was creating my nation, the Anamaniacs theme song popped into my head... But I wanted to do something that was a play on that. It sounded like a nation... "Anamania"... but it seemed like it was missing something, an "L"... which, dropped in so convieniently to make the nation name "Analmania". Which then led to our moto, "Astroglide, Duct Tape, and Gerbils for All"... Which then led to our national animal, the Gerbil... which, not surprisingly, is constantly on the brink of extinction. We *claim* it is due to deforestation, but I think there might be a more sinister and frankly, disturbing reason for this. Then of course, our national currency had to be the Colon.

And of course, our National Anthem was just a given...

"Cuz we're Analmaniacs"

"And we're crazy to the max..."

"So just sit back and relax..."

I'm sure you can see where that is going...

:)

It is like, if Beavis and Butthead were the rulers of a nation... Anally fixated toilet humor as a national gross product... heh.

Ok... then I *was* clear on that aspect of the game, too. And outside of involving yourself in the role-playing (which includes, as I have ascertained, behavior called Godmodding, which I assume means that when the guy says, "I nuke your city" you respond, "My city has a nuclear invunerability and negation shield device surrounding it"), then the game *engine* itself is pretty basic, right? Create your nation, describe your motto, your animal, your currency, and then start deciding on issues which will then affect how your nation is catagorized and how your population, prosperity, economy, civil rights, and uh, political freedoms progress....

Is there some mechanism by which role playing has a REAL effect on the status of your nation? I mean, if you role play, and it doesn't go the way you want it to, when you go back, will it say,

"Analmania is suffering from severe radiation posioning throughout it's countryside after recent nuclear warfare with the neighboring nation of The United Confederacy of Right Wing Extremist Christian Homophobes, who mistakenly thought that Analmania was a haven for homosexuals"?

Which would, undoubtedly, be an easy mistake to make... but still...

No, it never has any effect on your nation whatsoever. They're practically completely unrelated. The only thing that has any influence is your population, and it's a one way thing. it never goes down because of wars, disease, etc.

Some players approximate the effects via issue choice - for example, if you're RPing being invaded, and have always picked non-military choices, you might start picking militant choices.

All the names I wanted were taken, so I typed in some random letters to make what might be a cnation name. I had no idea what I was writing down at the time, or even how to pronouce it! ^_^

I V Stalin
10-01-2005, 13:14
Mine is something to do with a certain Uncle Joe. Y'know, terrorised the Soviet Union between 1929 and 1953? But still one of the greatest leaders of the 20th century, if not all time. And it meant that the quote I wanted to use for my national motto ('One death is a tragedy, ten million is a statistic') made a little more sense, as it was Stalin who said it. It works best if you say it in a crappy Russian accent as well.
Retired Colonels
10-01-2005, 13:27
I've always been intrigued by writers to the Daily Mail who usually say:

"It wasn't like this in my day", "It's political correctness gone mad", "Something should be done about it", "There's nothing wrong with the youth of today that can't be solved by military training/beatings/being locked in the basement"

They are always signed by Colonel X Xxxxxx (Ret'd). So I'm playing as a nation run by these Colonels (ret'd).
