Ok sorry for being uneducated...but I am.

Here is what I need to know --please explain as simply as possible.

I have X number of apples.
Some apple are Z apples and some apples are Y apples.

The without looking at my apples I am supposed to guess at how many Z apples I will have.
The ratio--is five Z to every one Y.

I realize this is basic stuff, but I am old and for some reason it isnt just coming to me how to figure this out.
How do I do this?

5 times the number of Y apples? 5 times X divided by 6? It's probably more complex than that, but it's been a while since I've taken stuff like that. Go education!

Well you have 5 Zs for every Y, and X in total, so
Zx + Yx = X
5x + 1x = X
6x = X
x = X/6

and Z is 5 x's so
Z = 5X/6

The trick in solving it comes from the ratio of Z:Y :: 5:1 means the amount of Z is 5 times that of Y, and both things have to add up to X. So if you let Z be 5 sub groups worth, and Y is 1 sub group worth, then there is 6 sub groups together that make X (the total). find how much is in a sub group, and multiply by 5 (because Z is 5 sub groups)

5 times X divided by 6.
...ok.
Thank you.

OK, so determine how many Y, then multiply that by 5 to get X?
Is that it?

Well really you're finding Y, and then since there are 5 Zs for every Y, you're multiplying Y times 5 in order to find the Z.

5 Zs for every Y sounds a bit confusing to put into math terms, because it actually means
Z = 5Y
But checking it helps make more sense, because if Y is 1, then Z is 5, which is what you would expect.

BTW, your welcome, I hope I'm helping. I love math. me = math major

I am praticing to Clept College math--CalcII-I dropped out in 9th grade never got beyond decimels--anything abstrct confuses me--If ihad the objects in front of me this would be nothing.
I will have to take two semesters of nothing but math classes if I dont get myself up to College Calc II speed.
I have a year to do it in. SO i am starting now.
And yes you are helping.
Thank you again.

No problem, if you need any other help, or need some useful resources (I've got more than I know what to do with) feel free to AIM me: SineWave314 or e-mail me at cpccztjn@hnbjm.dpn
(I encrypted my e-mail address to stop spammers, or at least spam bots. Don't worry, try it out, its a simple letter-shift scheme, and will be a good mathematical excercise)

I think I did this right.

X=25,333,502 the Ratio of 5Z to 1Y is what I am looking.

So
Y=4222250.33
Z=21111251.66

Yes?

Letter shift...you mean ceasarian coding?
