So I was happily watching episode 6 of the first season of ER on DVD, which I bought two days ago. I love ER. A lot.

The last scene of the episode (and the disc) comes on and almost to the end, the disc dies. FOR NO REASON. I cleaned it 5 times, and there was barely any improvement. This is why VHS tapes are better. THEY DON'T BREAK FOR NO REASON.

Yeah they do.
He's right, In England we call it "Law of Sod".

I'd take it back to where you bought it and explain the problem, they should sort it for you.

But they can be shite quality and are an even bigger bugger to clean when you need to, but I understand what your saying about DVD's, their dodgy things depending on where you buy them.

So, you mean the disc just doesn't play anymore? Or does it always stop at that one scene?

Other than a scratch, I can't think of any reason a disc can just die like that.

VHS tapes don't last too long, many of mine have worn down after only 5 years.

There's also DVD recorders now, for your TV, get some DVD-R's, press the red circle and bingo, crystal clear recording. :)

As long as you take care of it and dont let it scratch it should play fine.

I bought the Back to the Future series on DVD and part 3's dvd had a small defect on it that caused a problem near the end of the movie. I just returned it and got another copy.

I got a few disks that were defective in some anime box sets I own and it was a pain to replace them. Bad quality control is one reason but DRM is also a reason why DVDs suck so bad. Its saner to just download the episodes in divx/xvid/whatever format and save them to removable media.

DRM just encourages piracy. If they want more DVDs being bought for the love of God just make a better product as well as a better delivery system like a commercial Bittorrent and leave 'pirates' alone.

I have had VHS tapes snap on me, and one of my VHS tapes went "snowy" right at the good part of my favorite movie. *frowns*

CDs and DVDs do eventually fade or fall apart, too, though.

But that's life...

Well... yes, I know they also break for no reason. But this DVD is brand new, and VHS tapes usually need to be played 5000 times or beaten with a bat before they break. with these things, especially double-sided ones, a speck of dust gets on em and they explode.

Well, VHS casing, sure, but the tape quality is more temperamental than Michael Jackson's facial features. Not to mention that VHS is susceptible to magnetic influence, which can total your movie if you're not careful. If you ask me, the DVD is worth the higher maintenance for the portability, higher video/audio quality, special features, and lack of a need to rewind.

Live Action Sailor Moon? That's like saying "Fat-Free Twinkie." You don't really want to know HOW they do it, but you're still morbidly curious enough to want to partake in it.

Its saner to just download the episodes in divx/xvid/whatever format and save them to removable media.

Except you run into another big problem: legality. Downloading them is not legal, and most people who truely support anime will also complain about even trying to pass off downloads as an alternate for the real thing. Fact is, the increase in people downloading worldwide may put an END to anime in Japan. Online theft has already decimated the Japanese R2 market, resulting in them having to charge more for a license just to turn profit, which leads to higher costs here, pushing people out of buying it because they can't afford it. Less customers means less money to get things licensed, less licenses sold means that the Japanese don't turn profit, forcing studios to close.

DRM just encourages piracy. If they want more DVDs being bought for the love of God just make a better product as well as a better delivery system like a commercial Bittorrent and leave 'pirates' alone.

Leaving pirates alone isn't an option, and I sure don't want to give up my high-quality DVDs for low-end computer files. The fact is that DVDs are the best quality currently availiable, and some companies, both in Hollywood and anime, are starting to consider HD formats. You're just trying to justify theft, and it doesn't work.

Yeah, that's right. Your VCR eats them instead. :p
