Today ( 12/30/04 ) Kofi Annan, Secretary General of the United Nations, finally publically responded to the Southeast Asian tsunami disaster. When questioned by reporters about the apparent slowness of the response to what could easily become the worst disaster in recorded history, Mr. Annan became obviously upset by the question and responded tersely.

Cripes. I wouldn't blame him for being "terse." Considering the calibre of the questions asked at the news conference, the question about his own slowness of response seems a bit trite.

Didn't Bush get lambasted for waiting ten minutes after the September Eleventh attacks?

What are you? Fox News? Kofi Annan finally held a press conference about the tsunami disaster, very different from responding to it. Press communiqués had been sent before and the UN response was immediate after the disaster, through agencies like UNICEF and FAO.

Personally, I prefer that the Secretary General holds a press conference at a time when things are a bit more under control than when his decision making is required somewhere else.

Good thing the tsunami didn't happen in the Sudan, or they would have just said "wow, that must suck" and look the other way.

There would be immediate aid given if it had struck Khartoum and damaged the genocidal regime.

Yeah, pretty much in the same way as when the US blocked any decision concerning Rwanda.

But thousands upon thousands of Sudanese don't matter. If only they had an oil for food program to bribe UN and European officials..then they might care :)

He sure makes Bush seem prompt by comparison.

No, he's Eutru. The guy who thinks motherfucking Hitler is better then Kerry. The guy who would probebly shoot everyone in the UN himself.

Yup. But this isn't a Dem/Repub thread. I'll have you know that both parties suck. The Dems only suck a little less than the Repubs.

$40 million trumps $35 million (last I heard it was that much from the USA anyway -will google for update. Compare the relative values of their dollars and the size of their economies and Canada is giving much more.)

I only found a pledge by the US to give more than the current $35 million. No updates thus far.
