There are several reports coming out of Indonesia that the death toll from the
earthquakes and tsunami's in that country ALONE could exceel 400,000. Yes, four hundred THOUSAND. This is an AP report from Bernama Indonesia without a byline.

Last I heard it had topped 100,00 or was expected to, but 400,000? Are you sure?? I really hope for their sakes thats not correct...
But with the threat or disease pending....maybe it's true.

One can only hope and pray for them. :(

I don't have any money to spare, so I can't do that. Perhaps I'll call some of the aid agencies and see if they need any volunteers. Hmmm.

You were a flyer right?

Ever do cargo? If you did and still have your license, they might be interested.....

EDIT: My crappy math is documented below, no need to dwell on that....

though I still contend that it is a signifigant number to lose all at once, to paraphrase an NPR announcer when it was 26,000: "On Setember 11th Mayor Guliani said of the casualities, 'We don't know how many we have lost yet, but whatever the number is, it will be more than we can bare(sp/wrongone/whatever).' The final number was around three thousand. Keep that in mind when we consider the 26,000 lost in Indonesia."

Anyway you slice it, that's a lot of humanity all at once. I don't want to find the place where I'm cynical about that.

-400,000=6,009,529,426, almost dipping it below 6 Billion, which is @ 1/7th of the worlds population all at once.

Actually, that seems pretty damn signifigant. Thanks for underlining that for me.

:: Taps foot ::

Ok, Math 101.

6, 409,529,426
______400,000 -
6, 409,129,426

Make that about .007% (7 thousandth of a percent)... about 7/100,000th of the world's population.

I really dont think it matters if 100,000 people have died or 400,000 people, both numbers are very big and the point is some people have lost everything, their homes, their friends, their families for gods sake.
Why does this not mean anything to some people?

It's actually closer to 1/7 of the San Diego metro area. Still, no matter how many people it was, I'm sure those deaths are very significant to the people who knew them.

I just got an e-mail from a guy who lives in my dorm. He was actually in Chennai, India and saw the tsunami hit. Crazy stuff.

I bet a lot of you are hoping the number keeps going up, and the pictures and stories of disaster continue to flow in.

Makes the news interesting, gives you something to talk soberly about, satisfies your inner lizard, makes you feel happy you have what you have. Don't deny it!

Actually they said the death toll could go up to 300,000, not 400,000. They're are also rumours that another tsunami could follow.

The confirmed toll at the moment is 120,000.

I have sent what I can and will do more by pressing the brothers at the Mosque, but for now, all I can hope is that if the number is 400,000 that my brothers and sisters in Islam in Indonesia remember to thank Allah that it wasn't 400,001.

Last I read it was 125,000. It could still go higher, since there are areas that have not been reached yet. I sure hope it's not 400,000.

And yet, there are millions (millions!) more that have been left without a home and are at risk of disease and other consequences from this devastation.

It's of curious note that the most primitive peoples in the Andaman and Nicobars archipelago, some of them at the paleolithical level of civilization, suffered no casualties since they sought shelter in the high ground before the tsunami hit. There were also very few, if any, wild animals casualties in the national parks and reserves.

I think we are doing something wrong.

Last I had heard, they didn't know how the tribes had fared, but they were extremely worried about some of them. They did say that a couple of them live at higher ground, so they should be OK, but there were some tribes they were very worried about. Where did you hear that from? I also heard something similar about the animals, odd huh? The animals sensed it coming and got to higher ground while the humans came to the beaches to see the higher than normal waves.

I just read about it in the Canadian National Post. I had heard that they were very worried about them too, but apparently they have reached most by now (there are a couple of very remote tribes and another one that's very hostile and won't let anyone approach) and they are amazingly ok.
