OK, the latest figures from Yahoo! (http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20041229/ap_on_re_as/tsunami_emergency_aid):

1. Spain-$68M
2. US-$35M
3. Japan-$30M
4. England-$28.9M
5. Australia-$27.6M
6. Germany-$27M
7. France-$20M
8. Denmark-$15.5M

All of a sudden, 35 million dollars from a country of 300 million doesn't seem so huge...

That was a temporary investment. Bush said today the US would donate a few billion by the end.

Given that the United States is the richest country ever in the history of mankind.. I think they should be ashamed.

However I'm not too impressed with my own country at the moment.. Canada has only promised 4 million.. now of course Canada has a very small population compared to all these other countries.. still Canada is the 9th largest economy in the world... I hang my head in shame at North America as a whole on this one!

America will probably donate more. Props to Spain though, good to see that socialist government doing some right :)

I'm sure these are all initial donations.. but what a chance we have in the west to really win the hearts & minds of the largest population of Muslims in the world.. As I heard it earlier today, we can pay for it now.. or meet the next generation of Muslims to hate us.. pay for it now, or later. I pick now!

Congess is out of session right now. I imagine there is only so much that the US can give until they reture to Washington. In a month or so, I would bet on a huge donation by the US government.

Actually, Canada has increased it's commitment to $40 million federally, and some provinces are kicking in additional funds as well - for example British Columbia has put $8 Mill on the table. (http://sympaticomsn.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNews/story/CTVNews/1104355151375_99764351?hub=topstories)

Still, kudos to Spain for it's swift and generous support for those suffering through the devestation.
