Technically a thread about the faults of religious discussion is a discussion on religion … so yeah guess your comment applies to this thread as well

I think the religion threads aren't all out to prove the other side wrong. Some threads, like mine, are just to see what everyone thinks. I'm in the process of establishing my personal belief structure, and discussing what I feel here has helped me clarify to myself a lot of what I feel. Seeing other points has helped me to think, "yes, I agree with that" or "No, I don't think that's right for me". I was raised in a very strict Catholic home, where you didn't question the existence of God or the authority of the Church. I love having a place to see other points of view and whether or not I agree with them, everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

Yes, they're stupid, but they're better than the endless racist threads that were here about 3 months ago when I joined!

Just a personal opinion, but to me they are not stupid. It's interesting to see how others think and what beliefs they hold dear. However some people are bigoted and intollerant it certainly makes them seem stupid.

I agree sometimes they get out of hand, but you know its human nature to try to seem smarter than others.

Yes, but it ends up repeating and you get the same topic over and over every 2 days. I already know the religious beliefs of just about everyone here! ^.^

I miss the racist threads. The solution was easy...everybody just screw everybody else till we're all one color. It's simple, cheap, and fun!

Religion threads, though, that's trickier. Everybody's like "My God is cooler than yours, etc etc...." though most of them who go into that kind of BS worship the God of Abraham...I just don't understand what the Hell they're all bickering about, they all have the same God. I imagine the Almighty, being eternally compassionate and understanding, would be a wee bit put off by all this bickering.

As for the majority of humanity that doesn't worship Yahweh, Jehovah, or Allah (the same dude) they're all just as faithful as everyone else and believe in much the same moral principles as anyone else. I just don't get what the hang ups are.

Actually I find some of the stuff on there enlightening: Grave n Idle's translations of the original Hebrew of the OT and other insights, Keru's comments on Islam, much of what Dempublicants has to say and posts from other intelligent commentators who I can't recall right now for instance.

You can take arguments about the proof of God one of two ways. You could take it as an attempt to convince the other person. In which case it often descends into :
"Is not."
"Is too."
"nuh uh, is not."
"yuh uh, is too."
"IS NOT!!!"
"IS TOO!!!"
etc. etc.
Or you take it as a chance to hear the other side out and try to work out where your perceptions differ. Maybe you'll even learn something new. Personally I try to give people a chance to argue why things that seem to me impossible or incorrect may not be so. Either you convince them, they convince you, or you agree to differ. In all cases it was worthwhile. If you don't put your convictions to the test they're not worth holding.

Finally, highly intelligent people have been debating theological matters for centuries now. Does that make them all IDIOTS? Maybe what you need to learn that an intellectual argument should not be about changing what the other person thinks at the end, it should be about changing what you think.

Yes, and it was brilliant to single out religon threads. I'm not sure how long you've been on this message board, but threads on politics, the environment and basically EVERY OTHER TOPIC just go in circles and people complain and no one changes their mind. :headbang:

Can't we all just get along? :fluffle:

Ya, but where do you find intelligent people for intelligent debate?
