Tsunami Relief Donations

The combination of massive earthquake and devastating tsunami in Southeast Asia has created a dire situation for millions living in that area, as I'm sure many of you know. So I'd like to take this opportunity to encourage everyone to please make a donation to any one of a number of charities who are helping out...
Here's a huge list of places you can donate to in order to help the world recover from this horrific tragedy:
Network for Good (http://www.networkforgood.org/topics/international/earthquake/tsunami122604.aspx)
Please give, and feel free to let everyone know once you've done so...it'd be fantastic if we could get some serious money coming from the NS community.

I've got a list of links on my blog. (http://incertus.blogspot.com) Ignore the ranting that surrounds them--they include links to the ICRC, India Relief, Medecin Sans Frontieres and OxFam. I get paid in two days and will be donating everything I can.

Bump--figure if we're bitching about whether or not the US is stingy, we can at least find out where we can send our own money.
Here's a NY Times list (http://www.nytimes.com/2004/12/28/international/28aidbox.html?ex=1106888400&en=49d84675cbb20a78&ei=5087) of relief and aid agencies. If people wouldn't mind bumping this to keep it up front, I'd appreciate it. You might put in any amounts you've personally donated and to whom if you wish. Thanks.

Islamic Relief gets about $1500.00 from me per year, generally ear-marked for Palestine and Sudan and my wife and I sponsor 3 Sudanese and 2 Palestinian orphans through them.
I won't change that, but I think I can spare about $1,000 right now for an online donation. Allah has blessed me this quarter.

What really stinks is when one of them dies. Yes, if you sponsor an orphan, you do it all the way. Letters, pictures, fun stuff like that ... but sometimes, now and then, you get the letter that starts with, "We are deeply sorry to inform you that ..."

Ah yes ... we do love the letters about successes. We get as much joy out of those as we do our blood children's successes.

Hm...people say that the US doesnt care about the rest of the world, but the US alone is sending a 15 million dollar aid package, when the EU is only sending 4 Million.
I would send money, but I'm 16, and I dont have a job, so I have no money.

I should be getting paid on Thursday (as of now I have slightly less than $4 in my bank account). Once I get money, I plan on sending some of it to a charity to help out...possibly the Save the Children fund, as I have donated to them in the past.

Bump again to say:
OxFam is great! I support them by only buying properly traded coffees and they get 8% of my annual charitable donations.
My breakdown is this:
90% - Islamic charities such as Islamic Relief.
8% - OxFam
1% - Addis Ababa Fistula Clinic
0.5% - Christopher Reeve Paralysis Foundation
0.5% - Amnesty International
I have considered that next year I will begin chopping Islamic contributions to 85% in favor of giving 2.5% to the NRDC (Natural Resources Defense Council) and 2.5% to DRI (Direct Relief International).
I can only thank Allah that I am in a position to help. It isn't much. The percentage breakdown is to keep the actual numbers from mattering, but even if you've only got $100 per year to spare, pony up!
You only have what you have through the grace of Allah and those who came before you to pave the way for your success. It doesn't hurt to share just a little of your own good fortune. So, instead of buying Halo 2, why not drop a donation to OxFam or something like that? Hell ... even donating a little to NPR is a good thing.
The following are among the aid agencies accepting contributions for those affected by the earthquake and tsunamis in Asia. Contact the individual group for information on how to send donations.

Don't forget Islamic Relief!Do you know if they're also in Iraq and what they are doing there?
I've donated to Americares and Direct Relief but I'd prefer to keep the amounts private. For those of you without a job, even pennies will help since some of the nations that were affected are quite poor.
As for the US, 35 mil is peanuts. Japan donated 30 mil right off the bat. The US's original offer was for 15 mil but when one of the UN officials said that rich nations were stingy they protested but kicked in another 20 mil.

That extra $20 million is a line of credit (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6762079/), not relief money. It's a loan, for crying out loud.
Describing the $20 million as a “line of credit,” [State Department deputy spokesman Adam] Ereli said the money will be made available to countries devastated by the most powerful earthquake in 40 years. This new total of $35 million is bound to be increased, he said.

I don't think this is a race...But I wanted to point out that EU is not a country. EU members donate money directly too, not only through EU.
Maybe you can ask your parents to donate some money they would have spent on your clothes or something?
I donate regularly to Unicef and Amnesty and to Red Cross after catastrophes. I would like to donate more, but as a student, I'm almost always broke. I try to help in other ways too. Many organisations are grateful if you can work e.g. an hour a week for them.
Helioterra
29-12-2004, 11:18
But all of you warmhearted people out there. Don't give money just to anyone. Find out where the money actually goes. Many times only a small precentage of the donations end up to sufferers and most of it goes to the organisations (in wages etc.)
Red Cross has promised that the expenses may never be more than 15% of the donations. Many organisations can do it even cheaper but also think about what kind of help is really needed. I know some people have been disappointed when Red Cross hasn't taken their old clothes. They don't realise that washing and sending them to other countries is more expensive than to buy new clothes. (stupid example...)
I'll donate $20. It may sound stingy, but I only work part-time.

I'm embarrassed for my country. That's horrible. Please fellow NS'ers, even if you only give 50 cents, try to give something. There's a lot of people dead, many more injured and even those who are uninjured are in danger of succumbing to disease because of contaminated water supplies.
Some of the NS players come from that area of the world, too. I hope all of you and your families are OK.
Some of the relief agencies (below) were already present in those countries so they are ahead of the game in distributing badly needed supplies.

Just UK+Germany+France is $75 million. Not taking a stand on how much should be sent or anything, just pointing out that what the EU is sending is in addition to what EU's member states are sending.

To those people that haven't donated yet, but are planning to buy lots of fireworks: stop. Take a moment to think it through. What is a better way to start the new year:
A. having 30 minutes of "weeee", "bang", "fizzle" and "oooooh-pretty lights", followed by difficulty breathing and lots of garbage on the street.
B. saving a few people, or at least make the situation bearable for them.
I choose B.

1 week's gross pay, to Australian Red Cross - the website claims a maximum of 10% used for running costs.
Australia donated $10M initially, then a further $25M as the enormity became apparent. (total ~US$27.3M), and there are only 20 Million people here.
Less than $1 per capita for wealthy countries, is a piss-poor effort.
