Is your Government in YOUR bedroom?

This thread has been inspired by a few things I have read in other threads about governmental involvement in sex between consenting adults. I bolded that because I want to emphasise that I am not discussing laws regarding paedophillia or rape or abuse. Just happy, consenting, possibly kinky adults.

Statements like these:
Did you know that there are still laws about unmarried people having sex in some states? These so-called 'fornication laws' are far sillier than age-of-consent laws.Hell, oral sex is illegal in some places. My state included. Some laws require the missionary position.Georgia is another state where oral sex is illegal.made me remember the "Spanner" case in the UK( http://www.barnsdle.demon.co.uk/span/span1.html is the best site I could find for background) and got me wondering. When all parties are consenting does the government have any right at all to legislate peoples' sexual activities?

How much interest does your government take in your sexual activities?

Do you have any weird or particularly intrusive legislation in your neck of the woods?

Opinions? Thoughts?

I think that in places where such laws still exist, they are completely unenforced. The only reason that they're still in the books is because nobody has bothered to remove them.

I don't really care. If a government official barges into my home and tells me what to do with my body, I'll whip out my anti-conservative weapons if necessary.

All I know about Arizona is that age of consent is 18. That doesn't really stop anyone though.

Ever see the episode of The Simpsons where they reenforce prohibition? Then they learn it was repealed? I think that can sum up what Siljhouettes is saying.

And letila, you are such a silly little Anarchist. Oh yes you are.

Who says they'd be conservative?...

I'm not aware of any unsual laws against sexual acts in the UK. I think there are scary punishments for bestiality though. And I do know that, shockingly, the age of consent in Spain was raised by 2 years - from 12 to 14 or something.

Yeah, Infinite Dunes is right; they wouldn't be so much conservative as authoritarian

This "anti-conservative weapon" wouldn't happen to be the same one your nation uses as defense, (as stated in your nation profile you created) would it?

The fact that they are not enforced is largely irrelevant. The fact that, if some idiot should choose to do so, they can dictate what sexual positions are legal is bizarre.

As for there being no weird laws in the UK, that's where the Spanner case was - a quick synopsis - police were called to report paedophillia at a party in the uk. When they kicked the doors in, they found no kids but a bunch of adult guys getting into some consensual BDSM. Long story short, some of those guys are now in gaol, a judge having ruled that the people who were receiving the BDSM treatment couldn't give consent to be beaten, etc. This to me implies that in this persons' opinion, you couldn't give consent for sex no matter what your age. A scary precedent...

Also, to any fundies out there, a paraphrase of a Supreme Court statement-

tell that to the gay couple that was arrested for sodomy when the cops burst into their house looking for drugs or some shit and arrested them because sodomy was illegal in texas, of course it was overturned at the supreme court but still

According to my law teacher he basically said any law that cannot/is not enforced in Canada technically isn't a crime... but I think he was just saying that if you aren't enforcing a law, the law has no effect and hence is null and void.

Apparently in one state, it was illegal to tie a giraffe to a flag pole. (I kid you not)

Wait a minute, am I to take it that these cops followed a law, as is there job, and then the people that got arrested got released because the supreme court said that it wasn't a right job?

Its much less paperwork to do it that way. Think about all the stupid laws out there that haven't been updated.

In Iowa there is a law that when a person is released from Jail they are given $50, a handgun, and a horse.

In one state, can't remember what one, a car is supposed to pull off to the side, and the engine taken apart when a horse comes the other way.

There are tons of these laws. Congress doesn't get enough done as is, lets not bog them down with laws they don't even use. If they do enforce the law, the person has the right to appeal to a supreme court, and then if its a stupid law, most likely it will be overturn, hell, it happened in Texas even.

I live in North Carolina, which use to have some rather strange laws concerning things like sodomy, adultery, fornication, etc. Most, if not all of those are now no longer in effect.

no, the cops broke into their house (i think it was the WRONG house even) on drug charges, and they were arrested for sodomy. after who knows how long the supreme court told texas they were dipshits and had the law removed, but you know how long it takes for the supreme court (UNITED STATES HERE) to get a case?

Well, in Florida it is illegal to have sex in any postsion but Missionary.
And my Puerto Rican Fiance and I have decided this law must be broken as often as possible. XD
Oh, and her family lives there, and we're there often.. so that's why it matters.

Although slightly unrelated. Here in Nova Scotia, it is illegal to throw a snowball on the north side of a tree.

Lawrence vs. Texas.

A neighbor called in a "gun disturbance," the complaint was later found to be falsely made with malicious intent. Which of course didnot stop Texas from prosecuting the guys. SCOTUS actually overturned all sodomy laws in all states by a 5-4 margin (yeah, that close). Also, laws found to be unconstitutional don't have to be removed from state law books. They just can no longer be enforced. Several states actuall keep certain laws on the books in some sort of hope that supreme court decisions will be overturned

Sadly, there are some parts of Georgia where they attempt to enforce anti-fornication laws. It's sickening.

the funny part is this, sodomy laws are backed by the same small minded baptist who are afraid of 'big govament' encroaching on their lives.

I took one look at the people in my government (I never want to see those faces again) and decided to ban them from my room. Besides, we have a left-wing government, they only ban things like smoking, alcohol, christianity and candy.

They endorse the kinky bedroom activities.
