I'm from Malaysia but I'm now holiday-ing in Melbourne. Talking to my friends over the internet about it right now. Yes they did felt the tremors.

Malaysia wasn't as hard hit because the Melaka straits isn't very deep, so the tidal waves wasn't very large. About 15 fatalities. 60+ injuries. Giant waves hit Northern Malaysia about 10am and the waves finally settled around 4pm.

Trying to contact some of my Indon friends now around Northern Sumatra region, but the telephone lines are down and electricity too.

Worse hit was definitely Acheh, Estimated around 400 dead. Most killed are villagers, especially fishing villagers. Bandar Acheh (the town area), heard buildings collapsed and lots of injuries as well.

Other fatalities resulted because of the deep South Indian Ocean. Causing a rise in high tidal waves. Especially Phuket 160 dead, 1000+ injured and Sri Langka (still unconfirmed).

RIP. :(

I used to live in Penang Malaysia, and it was hit. 10 died in Penang. Luckily I'm in Australia now ...

An 8.9 magnitude earthquake would have levelled a city if it had occured near one. We had an 8.5 in Australia in an isolated area in Tasmania.

Broadcasting live from Grandparents house-it's TIN!

Yes I herd about this incident. It's terrible. That's gotta be the worst disaster this year-and it's a terrible thing to happen to anyone at this time of year.

Oh okay. Penangnite. :)

What I heard though was Gurney Drive was destroyed. (No more satay, chicken wings and Sotong Kangkung) :p And hotels are all still standing fine. So are the apartments. However some in the vicinity, people have been evacuated for the night.

Some deaths were also caused because they were driving on the road to Bukit Bendera (That coastal road) facing the ocean. Their cars were just washed off the road into the sea.

THe rest were mostly fishermen. 10pm man, people are up and driving around already. Thankfully it's still is a holiday.

Yeah, the earthquake was an underwater earthquake close to North Sumatra. Acheh there. Sri Langka kena damn bad. :(

It is now up to over 7000:

JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) Officials have reported new deaths in Sri Lanka and India, bringing the death toll from massive tidal waves to more than 7,000.

Right off my Yahoo news alert!

The death toll is probably higher is those totals don't account for isolated communities without modern communications.

And I was complaining about the "big" one we had here in Osaka a few months back. :(

(Hate to say it but the next big one in Tokyo will make this look tiny... :()

this is 10,000 times more powerful

personally i would rely on the bbc http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/south_asia/4125481.stm

nothing has come from burma but judging by where it is and the death tolls either side of it its unlikely to have been hit too badly

EDIT:sky news says 8600 dead

There will be a Red Cross appeal for aid, surely? This is too terrible, coming at a time when so many of us have enjoyed a peaceful, safe and happy Christmas.

this is 10,000 times more powerful

Nope. Only 4 times.

The Richter Magnitude Scale, more commonly used by the media and the public, measures the magnitude of the earthquake. It is calculated logarithmically in which each unit of amplitude of earthquake waves is factored ten times larger than the previous reading. An earthquake measured at 8.0, for example, would be 10,000 times stronger than an earthquake measured at 4.0.

It would have had to of been a 14.5 in that case.

This is terrible. BBC was saying 7000, CBC 8000. It will probably be more than that because there are many isolated regions all along the coast.

Sri Lanka has declared a national emergency state and are appealing for international help. I hope the rest of the world will act fast.

This was the fifth largest earthquake since they started taking measurements over 100 years ago.

What concerns me is that the epicenter is relatively close to where Krakatau is rebuilding. Have we heard if the aftershocks have ceased?

My thoughts and heart goes out to those in the region.

It has not ceased! Aftershocks won't stop for quite awhile. I hope someone is actually monitoring Krakatau just incase!
