Can anyone suggest the best Iron Maiden albums worth getting?

I've already got Brave New World, Dance of Death and Number of the Beast.

Any others that stand out above the rest?

Powerslave and Iron Maiden

Powerslave and Iron Maiden are good choices, and so are Killers and Seventh Son of a Seventh Son.

Actually don't ask me, I am on a quest to purchase almost every Maiden album, so I'd recommend virtually all of them, except the two Blaze albums and No Prayer For The Dying.

Ha, why no Blaze albums? He has a .... rather unique voice :P, no but seriously there are some good tunes on them as well.

And as already said, my suggestions would be Powerslave, Seventh bla bla, Iron Maiden, Piece of mind (The trooooooopeeeeer!), Fear of the Dark (you just HAVE to love "Afraid to shoot strangers") and Brave New World. I have been very reluctant of buying Dance of Death since it doesn´t appeal to me very much... but that´s just me. Still, I havn´t actually been listening to my Maiden records for quite some time, been playing their song on guitar though :P

Yeah.

So far I like the sound of Brave New World the best... which would be similar in sound to that?

You're right, the Blaze albums weren't atrocious or anything, just not exactly Maiden's best.

And I know what you mean about 'Afraid to shoot Strangers', it's class.

Fear of the Dark was a very melodic album, you might like that.

Get powerslave, piece of mind, seventh son (best concept album I've heard in a while) fear of the dark and if you really like live stuff, get Live after Death.

On another topic, was anyone else pissed at the awful 3D cover on the latest album? I mean, WTF is that? Looks like the 3D comes from Tomb Raider. The first one. Get some decent artistry on it, for God's sake.

To the person who wrote this thread, I congratualte you on Number of the Beast. IMHO, either the best or second-best album, with powerslave. Buy powerslave. Now.

The artwork was pretty rubbish yeah. The music inside was class though. I went to see Maiden last year on December 6th at Sheffield. And they ruled.

Then again, it's not the daftest album cover; Deep Purple's 'Bananas' anyone?

Number of the Beast

is the worst maiden album behind the blaze albums which go x factor then virtual xi.

the best are iron maiden then powerslave.

Already have Kill 'Em All and Ride The Lightning.

I won't make any suggestions, since I like the old stuff too, ie... Maiden Japan, etc...

That is a good one, any of the early Metallica is good if you like them from that era.

MoP is probably the best Thrash album Metallica ever made. Black album is good, even though it's not really thrash and even though they sold out like corporate pop-chart friendly music video-making types... but come on "sandman"...

Listen to some Motorhead also.

You're best off getting anything Bruce Dickinson sings on. Paul Di'Anno is, in my opion, an acquired taste at best. Blaze Bayley gets flak unfairly. Steve Harris wrote a lot of the songs as if Blaze were Bruce, but Blaze doesn't have the range.
Anywho, for albums, Best of the Beast has some good stuff on it, even if it doesn't have Wrathchild on it. I'm biased against Edward the Great sine I own Best of the Beast and there's four songs on Edward the Great that aren't on Best of the Beast, and those ones were from Rock in Rio.

Powerslave, Iron Maiden and The Number of The Beast are the 3 best albums ever released by Maiden, but Brave New World was also one of the finer albums.

Dance of Death was dissapointing, and could have been better.

The top maiden albums are Seventh son, somewhere in time, piece of mind, FotD, Killers... Damn, it's hard to find one that does suck. NPftD is a weak album overall, but there are some classics on there. The title track, and bring your daughter to the slaughter are pretty good songs.

And while you're on the whole "buy lots of classic metal albums" rampage, there are two things you MUST get.

Painkiller and Defenders of the Faith, both by judas priest.

In my opinion, not only are these the greatest priest albums of all time, they are the greatest albums of all time.

Killers is my favourite. Also following is Brave new world, Number of the Beast (mostly because of Hallowed be thy Name) and Seventh Son of a Seventh Son.

I agree that Hallowed Be Thy Name really boosts NoTB in my opinion.

I'll check and see if I have those Judas Preist albums on an mp3 cd somewhere, i remember seeing some JP stuff.

Listen... I own every Maiden album, I saw them live, and I met Nicko, their awesome drummer. Here's my picks for the top 3 and my fav songs on each:

1: Seventh Son of a Seventh Son , "Only the Good Die Young"
2: Somewhere In Time , "Alexander the Great"
3: (for me this is a tie between NoTB and Powerslave... i just can never decide)

Powerslave , "Ryme of the Ancient Mariner"
NoTB , "Hallowed Be Thy Name"

There ya go. And whats all this bashing of their new album? I think its great. Montesegur (or h.e its spelled), Paschendale, Dance of Death. I mean cmon. Awesome tracks! I'll give you that it wasn't in my top 5 albums, but I mean... its better than Metallica

And as for some old bands coming out with new albums. Look at JUDAS PRIEST. If you want to add some variety I recommend checking something out from them! Halford's back. I saw him this past summer. GREAT. And Motley Crue is back as well. Look for their albums this coming year. Should be very good.

I got Dance of Death on the cheap its not great.
Got Fear of The Dark too.
Greatest hits Edward the Great is bloody awesome-Fear of the dark at Rock in Rio kicks arse.

Seventh Son of a Seventh Son rules.

a fan is a fan. buy them all, as i have. maiden is such a prolific band, with such a large body of contributive work, that one should listen to the entire catalogue, to understand the scope of their creativity. (and purefuckingtalent!) btw, best time i ever saw maiden was with anthrax in Boston, 1992. that show was amazing! \m/

A list of favourites from the IM albums I've got.

Iron Maiden - Iron Maiden

Number of the Beast - Hallowed Be Thy Name

Powerslave - Rime of the Ancient Mariner

Brave New World - Dream of Mirrors

Dance of Death - Dance of Death
______

Now for the Metallica albums.

Kill 'Em All - Seek and Destroy

Ride the Lightning - Fade to Black

Master of Puppets - The Thing That Should Not Be

And Justice For All - The Frayed Ends of Sanity

The Blaze albums of Iron Maiden are highly underrated, both are in their top five. The worst is "Killers". I'd also recommend "Piece of Mind" and "Somewhere in Time".

As far as Metallica goes, "Master of Puppets" is good, but "Ride the Lightning" is better. Yes, I know I'm the only one who feels that way, but I'm not sure how people can view the album with "The Thing That Should Not Be" as being better.

Oh, and "Painkiller" by Judas Priest is a fantastic album.

a friend of mine & i have been buying our albums together for ages now - neither of us remember who's is whose any more :) (i get the ripped albums on this here pc and he gets the cds... good system)'
between us then we own all the studio maiden albums, two 'bests of' (edward the great, best of the beast), the first 'ultimate rarities' and dvds of some sort (i dont have them).
same with 'tallica.
and megadeth (gig was soooo awesome! was this close to fuckin Dave Mustaine!!)
and i think we have all the black sabbath studio albums too (and more, but not sure)

Once, you've got all the maiden albums, start a judas priest collection. Priest have about as many studio albums, I think perhaps a couple more actually, and their music is just as good, sometimes better. Painkiller, Defenders of the Faith and Ram it Down are awesome heavy metal albums.

Plus, Priest's new album, Angel of Retribution, is set to come out in late february. Get it!

To be fair the X factor had some very good songs on it. Blaze just wasn't bruce however. Virtual XI is maiden at their worst. IT has two good songs.

Fear of the dark is over rated I feel, while no prayer... gets a lot of unfair stick.

However it did follow seventh son, their best album. However Powerslave, Brave new world and both Diannio (IM and Killers) albums are great. Bruce actually does most Diannio songs better anyway, and they are great songs. Piece of mind starts well... and then dies... number of the beast is over rated but still pure genius. Dance of Death was good, not one of the better albums for maiden, but in absolute terms, it was still a very good album. It's just that most maiden albums are.

Oh and I own 4 metallica albums. I bought the black album, and was nearly put off them forever. I wanted thrash. I was played kill em all and now own all of the first three. Master of puppets is amazing, but you will over play it and get fed up of it at some point. It just happens. It's too good.

Um.

Probably, Fear of the dark, or Powerslave if you like Brave new world...

My favorites are FOTD, and the self-titled 'Iron Maiden' though.

And Rock in Rio is a great dvd ! :D It's apparently edited by Mr Steve Harris himself...

Also...

Metallica are pants in my opinion... What the fuck happened between classics like One, to the garbage that is St Anger?

Get Powerslave, but I do like Beast better. Oh, and the "Fear of the Dark" live track is the shit.

If you like Maiden, check out the Power Metal scene. It's filled with newer bands with a great sound, descended from the Maiden lienage.

Some Bands to Look Into:
-Iced Earth (Saviors of American Metal)
-Blind Guardian (You gotta love the marching chorus)
-Rhapsody (Who brought the orchestra?)
-Hammerfall (Classic Scandinavian)
-Dream Evil (Newer Band)
-Power Symphony (Chick Lead)
-Savatage (Hey, I like 'em!)

On Metallica, their better albums were Lightning, Master, Justice, and Black. Most people diss ...and Justice over the bad mixing, but if you adjust the bass up where it should be, it's easily their best work. (The title track has a sweet jamming section, too.)

Load and Reload are okay. Objectively good, but not up to par. Kill 'em All actually grates on my nerves, because Hetfield's balls hadn't dropped, and his voice is excruciatingly high. ("the lights, the lights!")

S&M is sweet as shit.

Garage Inc is interesting, but covers. Once again, well done, but not A List material.

St. Anger needs to be dropped into the raging hermaphroditic pits of hell, to be raped and burned for all eternity. Go get Megadeth's latest album instead, "The System Has Failed".

If your going to buy a Maiden album, Powerslave is their best work, Number of the Beast is good too.
As for Master of Puppets, that is by far the best Metallica album to date, with And Justice for All, coming in second.

In fact, Puppets is probably one of the best Heavy Metal albums ever recorded.

The first two Maiden albums are worth owning as well. Paul Di Anno's voice is much more raw and gritty than Dickensons, and tends to get overlooked by people who prefer Dickensons voice.

Buy Powerslave...buy Master of Puppets.

trust me.

Master of Puppets - Metallica

Since I intend to eventually have every Iron Maiden album it doesn't really matter which one I get next.

I don't intend to get any more Metallica since I'm not really partial to Black or anything after it. I reckon Black was Metallica's turning point.

As for Judas Priest, that's what I'm looking to build on, and possibly some Megadeth.

So any suggestions for those bands?

cool list :)
metallica's turning point was definatley the black album - its all downhill after that for me, though they did begin the change before the album with 'and justice...' but that's ok.

anyway, megadeth. for my money, i'd get Countdown To Extinction first, and then Rust In Peace (comparable to (better than?) pre-black album metallica stuff). those are their best two imo, so see if you like 'deth after listening to them... they're not as 'listenable' as metallica, see

don't own much priest myself (just 4 albums), so can't really advise
