Question: Is the war in Iraq really like WWII?

My answer:

Only if you cast the US in the role of Germany. Lightning-fast invasion...occupation forces...a resistance movement...

no wonder Americans hate France, I guess it's uncomfortable for them to see this new 'WWII' from the point of view of those perpetrating the Blitzkrieg.

hmm, i think id compare it more to the British Imperial Invasion of Egypt in 1884, when we Brits decided we were going to 'liberate' Egypt from the oppresive Muslim government they were under and bring them the benefits of western Civilisation, (or in other words, we were worried that the anti-western government might shut the Suez canal and hold British trade by a strangle hold) and so we invaded, with the blessings of all western nations (including the USA) as doing the right thing, the plans were: -
i) Bring a democratic government (but only pro-wesern candidates can stand)
ii) Our troops will ensure fair and free elections for 4 years
iii) End the revolution
iv) We go home, everybody (especially us) is happy - Ipso Facto

Guess what happenned, things didnt go the way we wanted, the egyptions had no wish to be 'liberated' and our boys were forced to occupy Egypt for 60 years, and when we left they voted in a massively anti-western government that shut of the suez canal trade....
in the words of Sir Winston Churchill: -

"Never, never, never believe any war will be smooth and easy, or that anyone who embarks on the strange voyage can measure the tides and hurricanes he will encounter. The statesman who yields to war fever must realize that once the signal is given, he is no longer the master of policy but the slave of unforeseeable and uncontrollable events."

Novaya, thank you for your insightful post. I must admit my knowledge of Suez and British involvement in Egypt is poor at best - but I'll also admit that the current situation in Iraq makes for a better fit than WWII.

I brought up this topic because so many Americans seem to have swallowed this fatuous comparison in recent months.

Thanks again so much. I'm inclined to have this thread killed, and to start another. Or perhaps you could start another - ?
