Dobbs Town

I look north out my window, and the city is quiet for a while. A thick fog-like cloud of tiny snowflakes hangs slowly, drowning out all light from the core. Everybody's home somewhere - even the expressway I see through the bathroom window is devoid of cars tonight.
Already there's a thick layer covering all the planters and patio furniture outside my door. I hope the local birds can find their way to the seed I'll leave out for them tomorrow morning. Well, one in particular, anyway.
The branches of the trees lining the streets are all white with accumulated snow. If the lights from the city weren't so bright, I think they'd show up in a sharp contrast to the dark of the night.
Instead, there is a diffuse, glowing quality to the night sky here. It is dim, shadowless, but nearly light enough to read by. It could be 2 AM, it could be 4 PM, there is a definite timelessness near the winter Solstice. I can feel it.
And if I listen very closely, I can hear the tiny grains as they tinkle against the windows. It is really lovely outside. So quiet, so peaceful...so clean-looking. I love a good snowfall. I look forward to it. I like snowball fights, building snow sculptures, making skating rinks in the backyard...and snowshoeing. If you've never snowshoed, you don't know the fun you're missing.
Apparently it's going to keep snowing all day today, and into tomorrow night. Good. I like the proverbial 'White Christmas' atmos. Makes staying indoors so much cozier. Especially if you don't have to drive a car, or shovel the sidewalk. And as I don't drive, and the entrance to my home is covered anyway, I've pretty much got it made-! Whoo-hoo!
Share your thoughts of snow or Solstice. I hope I'm not the only one who's been looking forward to this...
