The Joy of Snow.

I look north out my window, and the city is quiet for a while. A thick fog-like cloud of tiny snowflakes hangs slowly, drowning out all light from the core. Everybody's home somewhere - even the expressway I see through the bathroom window is devoid of cars tonight.

Already there's a thick layer covering all the planters and patio furniture outside my door. I hope the local birds can find their way to the seed I'll leave out for them tomorrow morning. Well, one in particular, anyway.

The branches of the trees lining the streets are all white with accumulated snow. If the lights from the city weren't so bright, I think they'd show up in a sharp contrast to the dark of the night.

Instead, there is a diffuse, glowing quality to the night sky here. It is dim, shadowless, but nearly light enough to read by. It could be 2 AM, it could be 4 PM, there is a definite timelessness near the winter Solstice. I can feel it.

And if I listen very closely, I can hear the tiny grains as they tinkle against the windows. It is really lovely outside. So quiet, so peaceful...so clean-looking. I love a good snowfall. I look forward to it. I like snowball fights, building snow sculptures, making skating rinks in the backyard...and snowshoeing. If you've never snowshoed, you don't know the fun you're missing.

Apparently it's going to keep snowing all day today, and into tomorrow night. Good. I like the proverbial 'White Christmas' atmos. Makes staying indoors so much cozier. Especially if you don't have to drive a car, or shovel the sidewalk. And as I don't drive, and the entrance to my home is covered anyway, I've pretty much got it made-! Whoo-hoo!

Share your thoughts of snow or Solstice. I hope I'm not the only one who's been looking forward to this...

Snow? Ohh! No thanks!

Yeah sure, snow can be fun (but only for the novelty factor- we never get snow), but its also FREEZING!

You enjoy your white Christmas though, and I'll enjoy my beautiful Australian Summer! :)

I was thinking the exact same thing earlier tonight, when after my power went out, I went for a walk. All I could hear was the crunch of my shoes in the snow, and the snow itself falling. Rather beautiful, even if beauty is hard to come by in the world these days.

The beauty is all the more vital because it could just as easily melt away. It is fleeting, but quietly awe-inspiring.

Yeah... people who live in places without snow just can't understand what it's like. Snowfalls of the right sort don't come too often, though.

It's been snowing for the past 10 hours here, though.

I miss snow. I now live in Arizona and its two hours to snow. I used to live in New jersey where it snowed every winter.

Well, provided you're well-stocked and well-insulated, things should be nice and cozy. We still don't have any drifts here, though I'm remaining optimistic. Twenty-four hours is a long time, after all.

Yeah, I don't think I could handle that. It just wouldn't feel right to me. I'm better suited to northern climes.

I'll bet it gets cold at night, though.

I just checked and there's about four inches accumulated. There's still hardly any wind at all, though. No blowing snow. Just an even accumulation.

I wish it would snow here.

I live in london, and all it seems to do is swing between 12 and 0 C and rain. It's been years since I played in the snow, we're lucky if we get a couple of inches for a few hours before it either melts or is washed away by the rain.

Anyway, enjoy it and Happy Christmas :D

Up here in Shetland we haven't had much in the way of snow. Plenty of wind though, so we get to freeze as well. Yay.

The snow has turned to rain - this is not a good sign. Once the temperature drops at the end of the day, we'll be left with a city of ice...
