Most Inspiring Person of 2004

Mercenary Soldiers

The votes are in, and Beliefnet awards the 'Most Inspiring Person' of 2004 to Pat Tillman, the would-be football star who turned down the million-dollar contract to enlist with the US Army Rangers. He was killed in April, by friendly fire.

A close second was Cpl. Jason Dunham, a 22-year old Marine who threw himself on a grenade to shield other members of his unit. Cpl. Dunham is also in the running for the Medal of Honor.

Out of curiosity, who inspired you most this year?

OOC: Is this IC or OOC. If OOC, shouldn't it be in General?

OOC: If this is OOC, then the BoSox. If this is IC, then...

IC:

While the Imitoran people respect the decision of the most inspiring person of the year, they must ask, why did these two people win? One man gave up a job to go do what his country asked of him. What is so special or inspiring about that. Another man died in the line of duty doing what any true soldier should do. Again, what is so special? We believe that people, in order to be inspiring, must overcome actual odds and inspire people to work harder.

In Imitora, trying to say someone is more inspiring than anyone else for doing what they were asked is, at best, insipid, and insulting to think that anyone 'needs' someone to inspire them.

Those two are certainly inspiring. Their heroism is far beyond anything I could ever hope to accomplish.

As for me, I think the most inspiring person was Thaksin Shinawatra (PM of Thailand).

hahahaha dead guys do not inspire me. a guy who didn't join the army would be inspiring to me. especially if not joining the army meant that he didn't get killed by 'friendly' fire. and how inspiring is a guy so stupid that he knowingly lay on a live grenade? if i saw a grenade my first thought would be 'run like fuck'

my most inspiring person, this year as it was last year and ever shall be, was jackie wilson. for the song sweetest feeling. a song which can only spread joy to the world.

Well, he did run the most efficient nation ever made and rebuilt Germany in an amazingly small period of time. If you push aside the atrocities for a moment, that's worth something.

The most inspiring person this year was no one famous. Twas my mother. :)

I'd have to agree. While I am completely against the war in Iraq (although I believe he was killed in Afghan any way) but I know his story. He was either the salt of the earth, or the stupiest person alive. However, no less inspiring. It's a great tragic story.

Corporal Dunham. That's just going WAY beyond the call of duty. He definitely deserves the Medal of Honor.

If you truly feel that way, then I truly feel sorry for you. You're missing out on some of the most important lessons in life. You are truly to be pityed. :(
