Well what is it? For me it's the zombie. They have the best atmosphere and are the most horrifying. I can still remember when I first played Resident Evil and that thing turned and looked at me, and Night of the Living Dead is simply a classic.

I said werewolf....zombie's are pretty easy to take out with a shotgun, etc.....but who has silver bullets just lying around....ad i don't know of any gun shops that carry them....
Were wolves can be your neighbor, friend, etc., but in the full moon, you better not be with them, casue if they trun, the jsut eath things, they are super strong, and quite intelligent....
Ghosts are an extermely close second....

I gave vamps a vote. If they're smart enough to hide well, they're pretty difficult to kill. It's not like they'll stand there and let you stake them. Also, they whole mind control thing is just bad news.

Vampires. Their whole life is just sexy. And they're closely followed by werewolves, cause they're pretty badass too.

Vampires: extremely strong, tough, with the intelligence and ambition to dominate a nation. A penchant for dark, gothic imagery and a fine cinematic sense of melodrama even things out. UNLESS they're spelt "vampyre". I will not tolerate that. It's so… tacky and new age.

EXTERMINATE!!!! EXTERMINATE!!!
They were actually pretty scary.. because they were totally 'alien' and utterly implacable (like a much earlier Borg, but scary)...
Of course, since they had wheels, you only had to get up some stairs to escape.... but still pretty :o

The Borg as originally envisioned in early STTNG, were pretty scary, because they were ruthless, superior in every way, and both implacable and unstoppable.
The Borg, as envisioned in Voyager, were the bad parody version of the earlier creation.
Original Borg = Scary. Post 7 of 9 Borg = about as scary as Ferengi.

My favorite style, too.
I voted werewolf... (well, check the name.) Always liked them; there are differing stories on how they behave. Many claim the werewolf is a mindless killing/eating/maybe-hump-something machine, while others say a were can still have a human mind while shifted. There are also debates on whether the full-moon myth is true, or if werewolves can change somewhat at will (I remember reading a Roman myth in Latin class about a man who disrobed, urinated on his shed clothes, and then magically shifted... his clothes on the ground turned to stone when he changed to his wolf-man self... which proves that early Romans had a Golden-Shower fetish.)
And then there's "Underworld"...

EXCELLANT series... personally, I think the whole "Ardeur" (sp, I know) thing has gotten out of hand, but the series has had an amazing run; I especially enjoyed Circus of the Damned.
And there is nothing 'mere' about Edward. I'd go so far as to say he deserves to be the new star of the series. :sniper:

I guess I make four? :)
Sadly, Who doesn't get the airplay on Public TV it used to in the US, and BBC America *rarely* plays it (actually, I've not seen it on several years). I have a decent collection of episodes, but nowhere near even a quarter of the series...
The best, IMHO, is MPT in Baltimore. They still play one complete episode (all parts) on Saturday nights without interruption. As I no longer live in the DC Metro area, I really miss it. (When I was a kid, Who was on no less than 4 public TV stations in CT, 2 of which I could tune in on UHF...) Today, there is NO Who on TV in Connecticut... or indeed in much of the US.

Well, There is a LOT of sex ( in Incubus Dreams ) - but is it promiscuity or pragmatism? I too think it has gotten somewhat out of hand, but only Laurel knows where the books are going.
I think Edward deserves his own series. The thought posited in Obsidian Butterfly...Edward the family man....seriously erm....ah...Frightening! And you are correct there is nothing 'mere' about Edward. The worst nightmares this overpopulated planet has seen were 'mere' humans - what humans can and have done make the 'monsters' look pretty tame.

zombie, of course! zombies don't just appear one at a time, like a werewolf, they come in unstoppably large waves. they're like, plague-sized.
Very true, on both accounts. Edward doesn't seem like the family man. And humans... yes, we don't even have to argue that point.
What's your favorite title in the series?

Narcissus in Chains actually. That and the one with the Naga. Chimera made an excellent villain. Omnilychenthropes. *shudder*
Circus on the Damned had the Naga, I think. Good stuff.
Laurell's been good about including Voodoo, too.
The only thing missing (from this survey, and maybe the series) is a good ol' fashioned Invisible Man. He can run naked in the winter, and no one cares!

I gotta go with zombies too. There's something about the brain-eating walking human corpse that touches my heart.
And vampires are overrated. Ooh, ooh, he sucks blood. Too wand-wavy to me. Werewolves are decent, especially as I don't like dogs. Werewolves would just about make me crap in my pants. But that goes without saying when threatened with gruesome death at the hands of the supernatural. But zombies are scary.
Especially when it's someone you knew in life. Or when there's a whole lot of them. It's apocalyptic and revolting.
Finding someone you know becomes a vampire is just like having a friend that goes into a goth phase, so you stab them.

Hey! The poll doesn't include classic aliens!
And what about Dr. Jeckle & Mr. Hyde or 'The Creature From The Black Lagoon'? How about mummies? Or are they a class of zombie, like Frankenstein?
My favorite has always been the Wolfman. The release of the beast within. Werewolves were the scariest of the traditional monsters movies. Put American Werewolf In London against any version of Dracula and I say the werewolf is scarier.
Dracula got all of the chicks, he was a ladies man, so he's kinda like the guy we all wanted to be; A party-goer with no job, lots of girls, and he eats fast food everynight... he also had the ability to change into a wolf or a bat.
Frankenstein wasn't the monster - the doctor was... The frightening things about doctors are that they lack sleep, are sometimes drunk or high during operations, and of course those nasty hospital bills. I'm sure everyone has thought about being the mad scientist or an evil genius, but they don't scare anyone. Not like clowns do anyway.
The Creature From The Black Lagoon was the low budget monster, but he still isn't as scarey as an ordinary shark.
Dr. Jeckle & Mr. Hyde was sort of like the werewolf in some ways, but I've had girlfriends that had Jeckle & Hyde characteristics. This duo would be the lowest budgeted creations of all and he still isn't as popular as Jack The Ripper.
The Mummy (I'm talking about the old b&w one) was only scarey to people who couldn't run. The guy dragged one leg behind him and had only one free hand most of the time.
Traditional witches/warlocks didn't scare me, I got really bored with Blair Witch thing. But they could conjure up some good monsters, like demons and stuff.
Still ,if I could be a monster it would be werewolf. You're not a monster all of the time. You could enjoy a relatively normal life; you'd be able to walk around during the day, have a regular job, date whoever you wanted - except during a full moon. It's the low hassle monster living. ;)
