And just so the more rabid conservatives among you now reading this thread realize it, this linked article comes to you via one of the more socially conservative tabloids found north of the border, so retract your claws...

My question is for Americans who'd know - is Washington state usually this polarized? What party does it usually favour? Anybody have any anecdotes regarding THIS election?

Do tell.

I'm sure the Democratic party hopes that the Washington Supreme Court rules in their favor on the incorrectly excluded votes issue--that'll make the vote difference big enough to end this thing once and for all.

Apparently Gregoire has won by 8 votes, out of 2.75 million cast in November. The simple fact that the hand recount overturns the results of the initial automatic machine recount will lead to numerous lawsuits and legal wrangling. The election isn't over yet, not by a long shot. If the 700+ mistakenly disqualified ballots are counted, Gregoire might win by a hundred or more...a much stronger position for her to be in.

However, as I understand the law at this point, Rossi is not allowed to ask for another recount. He can bring other suits (probably attacking the validity of certain ballots).

King County officially reports the results of their recount at 3:30 PM, hopefully the win stands. An 8 vote Gregoire win means King broke for Gregoire by 57 votes, a smaller number than I would have expected (considering she had a 150,000 vote lead on Rossi in that county).

In any case, if Gregoire does win, that would mean Democrats held the governor's mansion, and maintained the balance of governorships nationwide.

I expect the Washington debacle is going to be drug out a lot longer than whatever happens in Ohio. So just how many states does this mke where the election is being contested or re-done? Four? Five? I can't wait to see what happens in '08.
