How free is your country?

Well, howdy neighbors! I've been perusing the forums hearing about how the US is becoming fascist and Hitler-iffic. And people charge that the French anti-religious-symbols law is tantamount to concentration camps. That Israel is Empire Number 4 and all sorts of stuff. Well, here's the worlds list of nations and their free-ness. And I can tell you, the vast bulk of people on here live in 1-1 free nations. So, have fun!

the first two paragraphs of their mission statement

Freedom House is a clear voice for democracy and freedom around the world. Founded over sixty years ago by Eleanor Roosevelt, Wendell Willkie, and other Americans concerned with the mounting threats to peace and democracy, Freedom House has been a vigorous proponent of democratic values and a steadfast opponent of dictatorships of the far left and the far right.

Non-partisan and broad-based, Freedom House is led by a Board of Trustees composed of leading Democrats, Republicans, and independents; business and labor leaders; former senior government officials; scholars; writers; and journalists. All are united in the view that American leadership in international affairs is essential to the cause of human rights and freedom.

Well, Canada got 1-1, but so did the US. I think this list only refers to countries that are evil in the traditional, "my 10 year old is in the local milita and we are happy if we can get mud to eat everyday or vote ever" way.

Interesting. I live in a 1-1 country. I have been to 7-7, 5-5, 3-4, and 2-3 countries (amongst a dozen others, all of wich are 1-1). People seem (overal) just as happy in all those countries I visited as here. Though I would, ofcourse, never endorse such systems.

Going to a different 7-7 country in March, we'll see how this one plays out.

The reason I posted this is not to attack social movements or anything, I'm just saying that it isn't that bad. It's not perfect, admittedly and we can improve (I'm talking about the US by the way) but it is no fascist state.

ya, but that is compleatly misguiding

we need to focus on what we can do better and make our system better, rather than become complacent with how much better we are than everyone else

so its essentually americans, americans and some more americans, founded by even more dead americans, judging the rest of the world by their twisted standards and giving themselves the highest rating possible. how charmingly ethnocentric, yet biased to the point of irrelevence.

Hehe as if the queen has any power here (nederland). Nice website anyway, may come in handy.

I think some of you are a little misinformed. Don't get your information from Moveon.org, they are NOT speaking for mainstream America. This country is as free as it has been.

It's only recently that we're becoming more facist....and that's only compared to how communist we are. Seriously, facists aren't big on all this equality stuff we have going on in America, and they are definately NOT FOR paying more money in taxes percentage wise then everyone else.

My parents aren't rich at all, but last year my dad had to pay the equivalent of a person's yearly wages in income tax. Even minimum wage adds up to a lot. I don't think that's entirely fair.

absolutely is an abstract concept

Freedom is measured by the individual IMHO it cannot be measured by the masses.

But I do absolutely Relativly agree :D

And people charge that the French anti-religious-symbols law is tantamount to concentration camps.

Im British but I would like to say something about that particular note.

The media has gone about trying to show this as a piece of French racism against Muslims. It is not that. Banned along with Muslim headscarves, are Jewish skull caps and oversized Cruxifixes.

The French have gotten it damn right. For once. All these ethnic minorities are constantly bleating for more equality. Well, its time they learnt that equality is a two way street. Yes they will be treated equally along side the majority and be protected by the law from discrimination. But at the same time, they should be allowed no exceptions.

For example, the I.D. card scheme. Muslim women will be allowed to wear those head scarfs that cover the entire face apart from the eyes when they have their photographs taken. Is it equal that they should be allowed to be an exception because of their religion. No, it isnt. Its no more equal than denying a Muslim on the grounds of religion and then giving that job to a Christian.
