What disturbs me about this is not that Bush continues to support and endorse Rumsfeld. What disturbs me is that our Secretary of Defense needs it.

Well, despite the fact that he is very unpopular, he has transformed the Pentagon, which has destroyed many of his predecessors. He seems capable of doing the job, and in Bush's eyes, it probably outweighs his popularity (or lack of it).
