The Different Breeds of Troll

Well, we seem to have an overabundance of trolls around here. I was just wondering if they came in different breeds, or if they're all just one big lump...
If you know of any different breeds of Troll, please post the name and some defining characteristics.

The only thing I've noticed is that trolls generally have a particular theme or topic that they constantly harp on. I've seen it be something specific like Jews, or as general as a political idealogy. Maybe we can classify trolls based on that theme or topic. There are also the good-natured trolls, but those are so few that I would be hard pressed to find any examples on this forum. There is only one that I know of.

Lets not forget the old hands that create pseudo-noobie nations and then ask questions like "how do I get more land?" or declare war on the United Nations.

The key is to say something that you know will incite a great deal of responses, but say it in a way that sounds intelligent.

Troll: n., anyone who posts on any Internet forum any concept or missive that contradicts your world view in any way, shape, or form, said contradiction being difficult for you to deal with for at least a moment (whether because of your emotional reaction or a real inability to form a cogent answer), causing you to reply in the form of a rant or namecalling.
e.g., everyone else in the world but you.

Yes. Basically, any post that causes an emotional reaction that results in someone ranting back is trolling.
Almost every post is capable of doing this, including this one.

Isn't the point of trolling doing it halfway a thread?

So its kind of a catch 22 I guess, because we want to have debates and discussions-and by nature and depending on topic, its logical that emotions can get involved. Thats just being a human. But at the same time, its the people who post things deliberately seeking a heated argument or intend to offend right out of the gate that we frown upon -right? Sometimes its hard to tell the difference. No matter what, if you open up a topic and it has a negative remark or insinuation about ones country, race, religion, sexual preference, hair color, someones going to get offended. And most will defend their stance. So maybe "trolling" is unavoidable in a way......
I mean we seek a response when we have an idea for a thread dont we? And we certainly arent going to agree on everything.

Correct.
The operational definition of "trolling" that I personally use when Moderating is: The act of posting controversial or inflammatory comments about political ideologies or about people or groups of people (who are not NationStates plyaers) for the sole purpose of inciting angry reactions.
If the comments are about other NationStates players, then I usually classify it as "flamebait".
Note that these are the definitions I usually go by. The other Mods might agree or disagree on the exact distinction between trolling and flamebait. Nevertheless, both are illegal.
Since this depends upon the intent of the offender (or alleged offender), this is largely subject to Moderator judgment; generally, if someone is trying to civilly debate their point-of-view, we leave them alone. If someone posts something controversial and doesn't attempt to debate their point-of-view, then we deem it trolling. We may also take official action against someone who, in our opinion, looks like they're debating merely to give the illusion of trying to debate something (as opposed to truly trying to debate it).
You may post a controversial point-of-view. However, it is recommended that you be prepared to debate it and to do so civilly.
Stay cool, stay clam, attack the other guys arguments, don't attack the other guy, and you should be fine.

I've found that when I give a cogent answer (albeit not one that everyone will agree with), certain people's automatic response is to claim "troll!" and call other names, and have done with it.

Is going about the forum looking for a post that can be deemed offnesive so that you can go report it...a form of trolling? Or how about reporting a post as offensive without having read it or by taking everything out of context?
