The only appropriate place to advertise this is here, so here I am. May the gods have mercy on my soul.

I am a proponent of Peer to Peer networking, aka P2P. I advocate using it for sampling and legitimate uses, not for mere pirating. I'm also disgusted by the entertainment industry's claims of loss of income, particularly during the early years of P2P when they were actually posting record profits. I believe the current downturn in the music and movie industries indicates more of a consequence of their reactionary attitudes toward technology than any real piracy.

I'm pleased to find I'm not the only one with this opinion. P2PUnite (http://www.p2punite.net) proposes to demonstrate to the entertainment industry just how much money they're not losing to P2P, and how much they stand to lose if they really annoy us enough.

The last week in April 2005 - 24th up until and including 30th - let's show how much money we are spending on them in reality already by denying them it. Don't go to the movies, don't buy any entertainment products during that week.

This is not to be confused as "go pirate everything you can find as the production companies are common robbers" but as a way to show that we are indeed supporting them already, so stop fighting us!
I encourage everyone to read through this proposal and participate April 24th to the 30th, 2005.

Music companies are such liars. They said the exact same thing about file sharing as they said about blank tapes: that they would destroy the music industry.

In addition, I don't really care that much for the shite that being churned out by record labels these days. It would not bother me one little bit if all music production was ceased forever. The tiny, tiny percentage of worthy songs in the last two decades does not justify the amount of bollocks that you have to wade through the rest of the time. There's more than enough music out there currently existing to last me, and any musician I care about is most likely dead or set up with enough cash for life, so why should I feel concerned that the music companies aren't able to make money hand over fist churning out dirge that I don't even want to listen to in the first place???

Perhaps it's because I am in a different age range, but I use file sharing mostly to send my digital pix to friends. HOWEVER, I have received music in the past. :) What I do, I think, is different than a lot of people....

My fiance sent me a love song over the net, telling me, "This is how I feel about you." I listened to it, fell in love with it, and suddenly, we had 'our song.'

Then I went to the mall and bought the single containing that same song. I decided it was the only part of the album I wanted anyhow.

I was also introduced to Squirrel Nut Zippers via a sent file -- which led to me buying their album on CD. :)
