For the same reason people say they are "African American", "Italian American" or "Hispanic American". It's an identity of seperatness from everyone else, usually rooted in pride and or ingroup biases.

Believing religion is bs doesn't make you an athiest. Believing God does not exist makes you an athiest.

please sir, be knowledgeable about other religions before making statements such as these, Buddhism is NOT atheist, agnostic is the proper term, and yes, I would know, i visit the Shambala center very often. I like so many slight Buddhists goin here, I would say I beleive in the four noble truths, eightfold path, and I follow 6 of the 7 precepts. Yea, my belief in reincarnation is shakey, oh, and if anyone says that Buddhism has a god, I might just break my vow of pascifism

I'm not quite sure what I am - even after doing a degree in Religious Studies!
The "I don't know =o(" doesn't quite fit because I'm not sad about the fact that I don't know.
I like studying religion, poking at it, shaking it around, digging through it, and occassionally bashing it to find out if anything useful falls out.
To me, it's important that people hold their faith , whatever it may be, because they understand where it came from, the problems it has encountered in history, the failings and the successes, not just because someone told them they had to.

well, at least get the top 5 world religions for fuck's sake.
i mean, three of them are there. add buddhism and hindhuism at the very least.
then leave a space for no religious affiliation and one for other. is it really so difficult?
furthremore, mithraism is not a religion, zoroastrianism is a religion.

Buddhists are most definitely not Atheists!!! They believe in a higher power, which denies them the 'right' to be labled as Atheists. However, one can be a Buddhist Atheist -- in other words, one can follow Buddhist principles out of his or her own free will and desire, and still not worship any deity whatsoever.

we believe in technology and science can explain our mysterys, if heaven and hell do exist, give us proof of such thing.. we have not seen this thing of which you speak of, what is heaven, what is hell? when such thing is known to be real, perhaps it will be taken into consideration.

I answered "I don't know" because I'm an agnostic. I think you should've put them up there, but use the proper word. My beliefs are not "I don't know" so much as they are "I don't think that it is yet possible to know".
I don't belong to any offical religion... I'm pagan, but of course that doesn't really explain much about my beliefs. But I believe in preservation of the environment, human equality, the equal right to life of all living things, and a load of other things.
I believe in Me.
I'm an athiest I guess. It stems from my parents not taking us to Church and saying "when your 18 you decide for yourself" and reading far to much Marx and Nietzche at a young age. Although sometimes I get all freaked out at the notion that there is nothing after death. I like the tenants of Buddhism and have Christian morals.
I have no problem with Religion and people believing what they want - just don't push it on me.

Sounds like more of an ethical or personal rather than a religious thing. I define religion as being an established religion based off of intuition and unproven or unprovable bases. But what you say can be reduced to political ideologies. I feel similar, and even toyed with different forms of paganism for a while, but I just determined in the end that I'm agnostic and hold my own non-religious beliefs.
Although sometimes I get all freaked out at the notion that there is nothing after death.
I used to for awhile, but then I matured a little and saw it in the ecological perspective. I think it is far greater for my remains to go into the earth and be recycled for future generations of organisms. The individual loses significance and I see the beauty overall in nature. I don't expect many other people to fully understand just how that is, but it is truly wonderful if you can.

I'm athiest... Probably stems from growing up in the deep south and seeing the blatent hypocricy of the "proper god fearin' folk" there.

Yeah I worked in a cemetary for a summer - not so freaked out about after death anymore - but damnit I'm being cremated.

Huh, is "Mormon" really made up to make fun of LDS? I always thought it was just another name for LDS. Most of the people where I'm from, Arizona, don't have a problem with being called Mormon. I'll try and keep that in mind...
