They're not really ex-commies. President Putrid was a KGB colonel, and Boris Yeltsin was a member of the Communist Party. Communism is still alive, well, and thriving in Russia. Read all about it in New Lies For Old and The Perestroika Deception by Soviet defector Anatoliy Golitsyn.

Putin is cool. Today he announced that Russia would repay a big part of it debt to Germany next year.

Considering Putin ran Russia for six months while Boris Yeltzin was dead, all the while claiming he was alive... It doesnt surprise, Putin has been setting himself up nicely for a long time.

The way this is being done is not communist, thats the problem with communism, people wave its banner to pacify the victims who are being enslaved by a dictator with no real communist intentions beyond running everything.

I have a feeling that this dictatorship forming in Russia will soon be reversed. The Russian's freedom of the press, and much freeer markets have exposed the Russians to new ideas. It's already happening, actually, as pro-democracy efforts are forming at the grass roots.

Bush is schitzophrenic. He said he "looked into his [Putrid's] soul." How can he look into something that isn't there? Putrid has no soul.

I read that "Putin has a good soul" tripe in the Washington Post. WTF? When did we elect Shirley Maclaine?

I'd like to see what happens with Yuschenko before going too far along the "Putin is evil" line. It'll be curious if P. takes any steps to quash that.

Dunno about Communism. An ultra-right wing nationalist/fascist Russia scares me more. All that crime, all those unpaid soldiers and scientists, all that crumbling infrastructure, all those security problems and terrorist fears. Sounds like a country ready to succumb to the "charms" of a new Hitler. A Hitler with nuclear weapons, a big grudge, and maybe nothing to lose by going on a "foreign adventure".

But let's hope not, eh? .....

Russia's first meeting with democracy and free marked economy resulted in a few highly opportunistic people taking full advantage of the change and swinging themselves up while leaving the ordinary folk to pay the bill. Whatever you can say about Putin, he's gone a long way to strip these oligarchs of their power (and hoarding said power for himself.) This, coupled with the fact that Russia just about always has had a strongman in charge, is the reason why many Russians would like to see a return to a system much like in the old days.

...At least that's what I've been told by a friend of mine from Russia.

As a person born in Russia, who's 3/4 Russian, and who moved to the US in 1991, I think I can address this.

It goes beyond Russians wanting a strong leader. Besides, who wants a weak leader? No person on Earth wants their leader to be an idiot. (no bush comments...be mature) Beyond wanting a strong leader, Russia needs a strong leader. Putin seems to be this man. Russia is so close to being strong once more, and Putin seems to a lot of Russians to be the man to take them over the edge. Russians don't bitch about their "personal freedoms" as much as Americans do. We/They want pride in their country. I had little pride for where I came from when I moved west. Now, perhaps in a few years, I once again can be proud of my native country. Perhaps they, under Putin, can once again be a world power...or at least as strong as the UK and similar "under-America power-wise" nations.
