TEHRAN (Reuters) - Israeli and U.S. agents were behind bombings in Iraq (news - web sites)'s Shi'ite holy cities of Kerbala and Najaf, Iran's Supreme Leader said Monday, accusing Tehran's arch-foes of trying to rig Iraq's elections for their own ends.

Shi'ite Muslim Iran was quick to condemn Sunday's car bombings in Najaf and Kerbala, which killed 66 people.


"I am sure Israeli and American spy services were behind these events. This is a plot which aims at keeping the Iraqis so busy that they will miss the exceptional chance to participate in the January 30 elections," Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said, speaking to Mecca pilgrimage organizers on state TV.


"The British and Americans want to hold elections on the surface but in reality they want to bring their own agents to power by holding superficial elections," added the Supreme Leader, who has the last word on all state matters.


Officials from oil-rich Iran have called for fully democratic elections next year in Iraq, where the majority of people are their Shi'ite coreligionists.


President Bush (news - web sites) and Iraq's interim Defense Minister Hazim al-Shalaan have accused Iran of aiding al Qaeda ally Abu Musab al-Zarqawi and former agents of Saddam Hussein (news - web sites) in inflaming pre-election violence.


Many analysts believe that the simmering violence in Iraq distracts Washington's gaze from Tehran.

Of course, that's who's fault it is. :confused:

I keep reading interesting conspiracy theories in the Middle East.

Aside from the US and Israel corrupting local governments, the more common conspiracy theory is that the US (and/or Israel) are committing genocide.

Now let's think about that for a second.

If the US wanted to commit genocide, and really do it, would they attack a few insurgents in a little village somewhere, or would they drop nukes wherever they felt it would do the most good?

Would we really waste the money on precision weapons, or would we be dropping napalm from B-52s in large patterns?

Iran is saying this because they are also interfering with the elections. They have their own agenda, and hope to get people to look somewhere else at someone else while they do their own dirty work.

To say that none of the neighboring nations have no agents in country and no interest in the outcome of elections is rather naive.

I persoanlly don't get why all the Muslim countries are against Israel and the US (and Britain most of the time). Do they just not like western democracies?

If and when you wake up to the idea that Islam is fundamentally, and philosophically, inconsistent with Western civilization, and thinks of it as a threat to its very existence, let me know. I can fill you in on the rest that you missed.

they think USA is the big devil and Israel is the little one. I don't think they like england, too.
but as I know they had good realitions with germany, russia, and france. maybe france that state has weapon trade with them, or contacts for developement of nukes.

but I don't sure that info is right. the news paper and TV shows are mostly against those countries, as some USA supporters of Israel.

come on, that EU never stop something. this was always USA. and the iranish had cheated europe before. they secretly continue to develope nukes in other ways.

So Israel were behind that car bombing huh? Strange, seeing as after each bombing the insurgents/terrorists/freedom fighters/martyrs leave a tape behind. Not many Jews or Israelis go around screaming "death to Israel" "Jihad" and "Allah is Great".

It is quite logical that the US would want to rig the elections in iraq: The majority of the population is shiite: Their most organized and popular leaders are religious zealots, like Al sadr (Al sistani is moderate, but he is too old..).. it is quite expectable that by holding free and fair elections in iraq, the US inadvertadly places a guy like khomeni in power in Iraq, that in time, would be bound to turn against the US..

Hell, why do you think the shiites are so quiet? That is because they got time and demographics on their side..

It will be fun to see what will happen if:
a) A religious shiite zealot is elected (the US and sunni reaction)
b) A totally faked election puts in power a friend of the US (The general reaction of the people of Iraq)
c) A Kurd is elected! (the shiite and sunni will go berzerk)
d) A sunni is elected! (the shiite and the kurds will go berzerk)
