Best Woman Singer in a Rock Band/Group...

There are so many women singers that I adore out there, such as Amy Lee of Evanescence, and even classics such as Pat Benatar (I'm 19, but I love the 80's). I love Avril Lavigne as well, but most don't consider her rock.
There are a lot of people out there who don't believe that women can truly sing 'rock' music, so I wanna get everyone elses' opinions.

In my opinion, she is definitely one of the few people who can pull off the opera-like voice, mixed with the 'goth-like' rock music. Lacuna Coil also deserves an honorable mention.

Stevie Nicks
Everyone in Heart
The singer from 10000 Maniacs
There are many more that come to mind but I can't for the life of me remember what thier names are...
It's amazing that I can even remember all my passwords without tatooing them onto myself... lol
PJ Harvey, Ani Difranco (well, she's folk, but still kicks ass), Janis Joplin, Beth Gibbons (portishead), Janis Ian...
also, the girl who does the little bits in cradle of filth songs... i find it a nice contrast to the rest of their music.

My brother listens to Cradle of Filth (unfortunately), but when I heard that girl start singing, I was shocked. She has a great voice.
OH! And the lead singer of One True Thing, Melanie Wills. I doubt anyone in America has heard of them. I believe it is a British Band, if not, someone correct me. Only reason I say that is because the cd isnt available here, and my friend in the military mailed it to me from Britain.
Tarja Turunmen-Nightwish
Cristina Scabbia-Lacuna Coil

Amy Lee, of course. I love her. And the singer from Otep (I don't know her name) is incredible. And moving to ska, I love the singer from Save Ferris too. And moving more toward punk/pop, my absolute favorite, Gwen Stefani. SHe's my #1 favorite celebrity. Totally hot, amazing voice, great personality from everything I've seen, and one hell of a sense of style.
Edit: You beat me to Gwen!!!

They're not exactly rock, but I'll add Koko Taylor, Melissa Etheridge, Aretha, and if there's a prettier voice out there than Alison Krauss, I'll eat my hat.

Aretha has an awesome set of pipes. She's one of the greatest singers period.
Alison Krauss does have a great voice.

hmm, assuming we can indeed list solo artists, and Ive included some non-rock artists just because I think in a vocalist thread they need to be stated!!...
in no particular order:
Susan Tedeschi
Gwen Stefani
Tori Amos
Stevie Nicks
Monique Powell
Etta James
Lee Ann Womack
Lauryn Hill
Sheryl Crow
Freddie Mercury (well, he was a queen! had to put that in for laughs, he does rule though)

I think that the best is Anneke van Geirsbergen, who is the singer in The Gathering. If you like Evanescence, check out Lacuna Coil. They're like Evanecence, but better and more original.

Yeah, her voice is amazing, Susan Tedeschi too, but shes a blues/rock singer.
Really good power vocals though, Im surprised no one else has mentioned her, since she even fits in to the rock category.
