Who was really the father of Jesus Christ? And why all the fuzz?

To the first point, no one really knows. To the second, it matters to a lot of people because they've built their entire worldview on the idea that a guy a couple of thousand years ago--hell of a philosopher, but still just a guy--is essentially a demigod at least, god incarnate at most, and that he actually gives a rat's ass about what we all do in our everyday life.

Jesus cannot have had a biological father if Mary really was a virgin, I think that's agreed. She would've needed to execute parthenogenesis, which is impossible for humans, or have someone to donate his 23 chromosomes to the ovum. Unless God has genes, Jesus didn't exist. Humans, unlike some plants and insects, cannot survive with half the standard amount of chromosomes. Some can survive with extra, that's the cause of Down Syndrome if I recall correctly, but that's more, not less.

Or Mary wasn't a virgin, and Jesus was just a very influential philosopher whose followers mythologized him in order to increase their credibility after his death.

Though it isn't incorrect usage of the word, mythicise is a more appropriate word to use there. And I would call him deified, personally, though I guess he was mythicised somewhat. And it was more than just credibility issues, it was most what I will dub the "martyr effect".

Its a massive conspiracy by the Catholic Church. They want you to think Jesus was god incarnate, but really he was just another guy who was a fringe OCD and had some crazy ideas.

Oh right, that doesn't answer who the father was. Well, I agree, it was Darth Vader. After all, we have to assume that some guy that has contacts who can build a suit like that also knows some guys who can do that operation.

So God just convienently bypassed biological law to make his Son? He just magically added all of the Y chromosomes to make an unfertalised zygote with the normal number of chromosomes? It's a Christmas miracle!

No. It's not. It's not that difficult to sow it back together.

Well, this ***is*** God we're talking about here. If he created the universe then he to created all of the laws that govern its existence. If he created the laws then he is above said laws and can break them at will. Or something like that.

So he's basically completely corrupt, then. He makes laws, but just ignores then whenever he wants. That is the epitomy of governmental corruption. I guess God is just a damnable politician then. Kind of like the World Controller in Brave New World by Alldous Huxley, is he? I hate hypocrites like that!

The response to that would be that you are humanizing god; you are presuming that the standard laws of logic and consistency apply to him. If god is above all laws then he can't be a hypocrite. In fact, he can't be anything that a person can describe in any sort of meaningful way. Of course such a belief system does make it well nigh impossible to have a sensical debate about god.

Well, did God not make man in his own image? Anthropomorphising God seems fair enough seeming as he was concieved by humans. If He made rules, then proceeded to break them, he holds double standards. Even if it would be warrented because he's God. But I return to the original point that anthropomorphism is fair enough in dealing with God, since he created man in his own image.

Gno - I made that point once too (different debate but a lot of the same points came up). I can't remember how my friend responded, but I remember that he did respond in some way. I stand by my idea that it is just really hard to disagree about god.
