Concerto Moon, the best 80´s (although they were formed 1995) shred metal from Japan there is! ;)

One can´t get enough of Norifume Shima´s(don´t believe I spelled it right though..) awesome guitar harmonies and arpeggios, *drools*

I don't listen to bands in general. I like the work of Tsuneo Imahori (Trigun) and Yoko Kanno (Cowboy Bebop, Wolf's Rain, GITS: Stand Alone Complex) though. I particularly like Tsuneo Imahori's "Not an Angel" and "People Everyday".

Yeah, there are a lot of better Japanese hardcore bands than them: Fucked Up Daily Life, GAIA, Ruins, Fuckgees, Gauze, Lipcream... I guess I'm showing my age my listing late 80s/ealy 90s bands here.

EDIT: forgot the legendary venue demolishing Boredoms, and Teengenerate have their moments too.

I see you've mostly included the underground bands, which is cool 'cause it's the best!

Melt Banana is great, they gave a good show here in Denmark last year. Also, Tokyo Ska Paradise has made some good ska covers but that's a bout it.

I received a Dreams Come True CD from a Narito clerk when I was in Japan as a present, but I never listened to it because it looked so shitty. I may have to dig it up, now.

My favorite though, has to be the screamo HC/punk outfit CHAINSAW. Do check out their 7" if possible, is totally awesome!

Gauze and Lip Cream were decent, but GISM is really, really poor.

Favorite would have to be Plastic Tree.

I also like The Back Horn, Acidman, Coaltar of the Deepers, and Merry.

Although Loudness' music is mostly typical of the hair metal genre, Akira Takasaki is undoubtedly one of the most virtuoso guitarists in the business! I don't know that I'd quite put him up there with Vai and Petrucci, but I wouldn't put him too far behind ... maybe on a par with Glen Tipton, Jake E. Lee, Randy Rhoads, Michael Weikath, Kai Hansen, and others on that level.

Hey! Check the first page, my post about Concerto Moon. Now that's Japanese Metal at its best! :P

If you want virtuosos, then do a google search for Norifuma Shima (I think it's spelled like that) or just do a search for Concerto Moon and look up the guitarists name from there.

I can assure you, you WON'T be disappointed! :)

EDIT: And oh, please don't place Rhoads with them others you posted, he was way above those guys! ;) (Not saying that Weikath or Kai suck, they absolutely don't! But, their solos aren't that difficult compared to Rhandy's)

X-Japan, probably. I'm also a big fan of a few female solo artists, notably Nakashima Miyuki (largely for her album Lullaby, kokoromomoriuta, the song Greet the Moon, tsukimukae, in particular). I think Utada Hikaru is largely deserving of her following and commercial success as well.

Tarantino turned me on to the 5, 6, 7, 8s, and I think the Kaji Meiko tracks from Kill Bill are pretty killer as well. The Seatbelts rock. Ummm... Dragon Ash amuses me, and there's little band called Lucifer with excellent album design, although their music is rather forgettable.

Oh, I like Kiroro far more than I should. This should also date approximately my most recent sojourn to Japan, as I don't think they lasted much beyond the first album ^_^

Rap has transcended language and culture. It has done so since...oh about 1995 I think (seriously, where have you been?) I listened to Iranian rap with some Muslim friends way back in high school! Japan has it too, and they've got some good stuff.

I don't see how it can. By definition, rap is a part of American culture, just as manga is a part of Japanese culture and so on. If you try to compose rap outside of American culture, it is simply music that resembles rap but isn't.

The only stuff I know is from anime shows.

Indeed. My favorite would probably be Tsuneo Imahori (who did the soundtrack of Trigun).

That's awfully closeminded of you. That's like saying Christianity can't exists outside of the middle east; after all, it started there. Coffee can't be coffee unless its made where they grow it, great literature isn't great literature unless its written in the language it was intended.

"I don't see how you can be Human, after all; you're not African." How foolish it sounds!

Have you never heard of "Urban Culture" ? Early Rap explores Urban culture; as it grew in the US of course, but since when is the US the only place that has Urban areas? Last I checked, Tokyo was an Urban area, no?

What you are suggesting, that the focus of an art form cannot be transferred to another area once created. How utterly perposterous!

well, I only know 2 japanese artists.

The Boredoms, a terrible, yet incredibly amusing punk outfit and DJ Krush (I'm pretty sure he's from Tokyo anyhow...)

DJ krush is pretty damn awsome.
