Touché. I guess it really depends on the mood I'm in, since though those three songs are kind of angry and/or depressing, the latter three are a little more upbeat. I guess I'm kind of bipolar in what I listen to. Let's compare two of them.
"Closer" by Nine Inch Nails
You let me violate you, you let me desecrate you
You let me penetrate you, you let me complicate you
Help me I broke apart my insides, help me I've got no soul to sell
Help me the only thing that works for me, help me get away from myself
I want to fuck you like an animal
I want to feel you from the inside
I want to fuck you like an animal
My whole existence is flawed
You get me closer to God
You can have my isolation, you can have the hate that it brings
You can have my absence of faith, you can have my everything
Help me tear down my reason, help me it's your sex I can smell
Help me you make me perfect, help me become somebody else
I want to fuck you like an animal
I want to feel you from the inside
I want to fuck you like an animal
My whole existence is flawed
You get me closer to god
Through every forest, above the trees
Within my stomach, scraped off my knees
I drink the honey inside your hive
You are the reason I stay alive
From that, I can see your conclusion. But the next one is a little different.
"Johnny Jump Up" performed by Gaelic Storm
I'll tell you a story that happened to me
One day as I went down to the yard by the sea
The sun it was bright and the day it was warm,
Says I, I'll buy a pint, t'wouldn't do me no harm
I went in, to the barman and said give me a stout
Says the barman, I'm sorry, all the beer is sold out
Try whiskey or vodka, ten years in the wood
Says I, I'll try cider, I've heard that it's good.
[Chorus]
Oh never, Oh never, Oh never again
If I live to a hundred or a hundred and ten
I fell to the ground and I couldn't get up
After drinking a pint of the Johnny Jump Up
After downing the third, I headed straight for the yard
Where I bumped into Brody, the big civic guard
Come here to me boy, don't you know I'm the law?
Well, I up with me fist and I shattered his jaw
He fell to the ground with his knees doubled up
But it wasn't I hit him, 'twas Johnny Jump Up
The next thing I met down the yard by the sea
Was a cripple on crutches and says he to me
I'm afraid of me life I'll be hit by a car
Won't you help me across to the Railway Knot Bar?
And after three pints of that cider so sweet
He threw down his crutches and danced on his feet
I went up the lee road, a friend for to see
They call it the madhouse in Cork by the Lee
But when I got there, sure the truth I will tell,
They had this poor bugger locked up in a cell
Said the guard, testing him, say these words if you can,
"Around the rugged rock the ragged rascal ran"
Tell him I'm not crazy, tell him I'm not mad
'Twas only six pints of that cider I had
Well, a man died in the Union by the name of McNabb
They washed him and placed him outside on the slab
And after the parlors measurements did take
His wife took him home to a bloody fine wake
'Twas about 12 o'clock and the beer it was high
The corpse, he sits up and says with a sigh
I can't get to heaven, they won't let me up
Till I bring them a pint of the Johnny Jump Up
So yeah, I apologise for how long that was, but they're a little different...and I'm not always angry...

I'm the same way with my music.
On one side I listen to the band "And You Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead", which is all furious drums and screaming guitars, with lyrics like this:
(from Mistakes and Regrets)
If I could make a list
Of my mistakes and regrets
I'd put your name on top
And every line after it
Because every inch of hope
Becomes a world of shame
I've had to walk through
Each and every day
And then I might listen to something by Iron & Wine which is just a guy singing over an acoustic guitar and banjo, with lyrics like this:
(from Lion's Mane)
and love is a tired symphony
you hum when you're awake
and love is a crying baby
mama warned you not to shake
and love's the best sensation
hiding in the lion's mane
so i'll clear the road, the gravel
and the thornbush in your path
that burns a scented oil
that i'll drip into your bath
the water's there to warm you
and the earth is warmer when you laugh

The Tain
by The Decemberists
It's an 18 minute song that is supposed to be based loosely on the 8th-century Celtic Ulster cycle's central poem "Tain Bo Cuailinge". I don't know anything about that, other than the basic story, but I know there are some people on here who are interested in Celtic literature, and they should check this song out. When people talk about a rock opera this is probably what they should mean.

The Decemberists have some very, very literate music.
Like I said, I don't know anything about the story behind the lyrics, but this review talks about it pretty in depty, so you can gather more about the song there.
